Super Simple Platform

Interesting idea. Just a thought on alternative materials if exhaust hose is cost prohibitive...may be able to do something similar with corrugated drain pipe. Did a little looking and Home depot carries a 3" 10' long around $7 here. And I'm wondering if you could cut up a cheap fat tire bike tire tube to cover it for noise/grip.

Skell as far as covering stuff another great idea that Jim had was using beverage Cozy's to cover stuff like the Ropeman, maybe it would work for that application as well.

Roger,

I'm not sure about the application of the marine exhaust hose but I'm sure someone could talk to a hydraulic shop that deals with heavy duty stuff and get any short pieces at a deal.

Eric that could work if you have access to a shop .

Roger,

I'd be real interested if smaller 5-6" pieces could be added to a Jim stepp cammed rope setup.

Chris I've thought about cutting it up several times so that I could use it like the Ameristep strap and position the pieces but Jim said the stuff is not easy to cut.

What were you planning on adding it to the side as another step for a platform? I'm not sure how well the rope would work compared to the strap.

They do sell drainage tile covered with socks to keep fine silt from filling the tile. I dont know it this would work. It is certainly lighter and cheaper than marine hose but is also not quiet.

Hey Guys,

I lent this platform to Jonathan who was in the video he didn't have a platform and where he is hunting on the Airforce Base they don't allow screw in or any device that will harm the tree. He is planning on using the SRT rope method to climb the tree and will use MEH platform to hunt from with his AeroHunter Evolution. As soon as I get some feedback from him I will let you know how it is working for him. As for myself I used the MEH platform in the backyard for practice and adjusting the AeroHunter Evolution for hunting.

Here is a picture of the 6" hose in it's natural environment and a picture of Jonathan having fun shooting out of the AeroHunter!

Hey Guys,

As for the 6" hose Jim said he had to pre-bend the hose so that must be some pretty strong stuff! He said it is really great as a platform just expensive.

Thanks,

I've seen the silt covers...I wasn't sure how durable the covers would be for this application. I also thought the noise may be lessened significantly with a rubber tube covering the exterior. I may have to do a little experimenting.

If you want guys I can send you a video of it on the tree and me stepping on it.

Roger,

Do it. Also, I don't think anyone answered the question of where to purchase.

I bet Flexible PVC pipe would be very similar and would be almost as rigid and still be able to be cut. It would have to be painted though. It's white.

Guys,

I will also see if I can get JW to send me a photo of the six inch hose as well. As soon as I can I will post the video after I make it.

Thanks,

I didnt have time to read the whole thread but
Guys it was too dark to get video for you when I got home from work. The tube is 3" in diameter and according to my postal scale it weighs 4lbs 9.8 ounces compared to the Ameristep platform at 2lbs 7.3 ounces. I talked with Jim today and he said he made one out of 6" diameter tube and you practically don't need the Saddle. As soon as I can I'll get video with it on the tree.

Roger,
At 5lbs wouldnt you just be better off with a XOP platform?

Are you planning on using exhaust tube or do you have an alternative material in mind?
Both.... I have some thick 4" aircraft tubing i might reinforce as well as some foam rollers that I've been testing as a ROS
I just found this thread and thought....wow that's not too heavy, it's quiet, and versatile!
I will try it with my platform too. I only have a square pillar in my basement to test stuff. Itll be warm on Sat and Sun so I'll try some ideas outside.

This is the 6 inch stuff.https://shop.hamiltonmarine.com/products/exhaust-hose-6--marine-hardwall-wire--by---foot--15355.html

I have found that a trigger point foam roller(6" diameter)cut into 5" peices more than adequately holds my weight when stood on in 5°F outside without cracking! I left it out for several hours. It's totally silent when putting on the tree and obviously already has a hard foam for grip.
I am gonna try the TP 4" diameter version as well.
