Survey question about front end weight for arrows

It's too bad he didn't start the test with a 400gr arrow and then work his way up. Maybe that would convice more guys that the trajectory "penalty" with heavy arrows isn't as severe as they believe it to be.
Yes, you are right about that. I see it a couple of different ways. One, I personally don't care about trajectory since I am bowhunting and shoot inside of 25 yards, really 20 and in. Another way to think about it is that long range rifle competitors use long, heavy for caliber bullets that buck the wind better. Sure, they start out a bit slower, but they hold onto their velocity longer. You don't see many (any?) 1000-yard shooters using 125 grain 30 caliber bullets, but many use 180 or 200 grainers, or heavier. Also, a heavy arrow also is able to absorb more of the potential energy given to it by the bow and that energy is used to drive the arrow and not wasted in the form of vibration (noise). Heavy arrows quieten the bow down.

I've been shooting 530 grains.
25 grain lighted knock.
9.3 GPI at 28.5".
3, 7.5 grain Q2iis.
20 grain onestringer wraps.
100 grain insert.
100 grain fixed blade.

I've found that this is kind of a do all setup. Great speed, decent trajectory, excellent KE at my draw length and weight (28.5" and 75#). I don't think I've had such a capable setup in my bowhunting life.

I also have some 550gr arrows down here. 200gr cutthroat. Some collars and can’t remember all the components. That 135 grains definitely effects trajectory

Out of curiosity, I see people shooting 300 grains plus upfront. What spine arrow are you shooting?

Generally speaking, with a compound bow you are looking at 300 to 250 spine. The exception would be with a trad bow with a shallow arrow shelf like my Hill style longbows and I can use a 500 spine on them, but I am using archers' paradox to my advantage.

Have you tried an aluminum footer just behind the broadhead on the shaft? Aside from adding some strength to the area behind the insert these relatively light weight footers will stiffen up the arrow shaft quite a bit, from my experience. I have used 2 inch long aluminum arrow shafting to make footers for 400 spine shafts and it stiffened them up to the point I could get good flight with some relatively heavy setups out of my compound.

High FOC really shines for folks who are limited by draw length and draw weight.
My arrows are weighing in at over 650 grains. I have not tried a footer instead I went to 200 spine. My bow’s FPS on 425 grain arrows was 340 FPS, with the 650+ grain I am still averaging 265 fps which is still moving pretty good. My penetration is amazing. But if I go any smaller than 200 spine the arrows bare shaft underspined. I’m not looking to add more weight. I went with what allowed me to drop 200 lbs plus wild boars that I occasionally encounter here in Florida. FOC wasn’t my goal, a heavy arrow with decent speed and good flight was my goal in my builds. My wife runs 150 grain broad heads, with 100 grain inserts. She shoots 500 spine arrows cut to 28”, because her draw weight is 42 lbs and her length is 24.5” hers fly perfect but I can run to the target faster than her arrow can get there lol

300 spine out of tradbow and 250 in compound. I have a 30 inch draw so need em stiffer than most.

The set of 550 I have is a 260 spine on a Easton hexx

Thank you, that's the arrow I use but in a 330.

Thank you, I was thinking at my DL and hunting DW I could never shoot that much up front. I guess I could get away with it (30.5/72). Maybe I'll order a couple to play around with.

265 fps! That's fast for a 650 gr arrow. What draw weight? What bow? You'll have no trouble going through a big boar.
