Talk me out of a diesel or help me pick!

Factory airbag suspension for your 2-3 times a year of heavy hauling would be nice. You can find used ones for $25k give or take. Then look into extended warranty...

Timbrens are cheaper just as effective and more reliable than air. Even. Ram salesman who has sold trucks for 25 years agrees

I’m far from my high school years and my truck is all stock. I wasn’t aware they dropped the g56 in 19 as I bought mine in 17
This is upsetting .....

Yep Ram was the last one to drop the manual option. For several years though the higher HP an TQ option required a automatic transmission which is complete opposite of how 12V an 24V trucks were optioned you had to get a manual for higher HP an TQ.

Yeah I’m not happy about this at all
Our grandkids will look at a manual transmission vehicle and not know what it is or how it works

Everything is becoming way too easy

There’s a bunch of people your age that can’t drive a stick. We’ve even got truck drivers with cdl’s that can’t drive them. It’s just what the world is going to.

Yeah I agree
I wouldn’t marry my wife until she agreed to learn how and successfully drive me around in mine

I kinda like that my wife can’t drive a standard cause that means she leaves my toys alone haha.

Well hopefully she’s not out with her friends one night and a situation arises where she needs to get away and the only way to get away is by way of a manual vehicle.
Don’t ask why this is my reasoning
My kids will learn too
Should they ever be in danger they’ll get away by any means possible

But I respect your view on not wanting her to mess with your toys lol

I'm 37 an alot of people I know my age have not learned to drive a manual transmission. I agree that it is good to learn to drive one. I just don't agree they are a better option in a diesel pickup. I can use a stand alone controller an make my auto in to a manual shifted transmission. You can not take a manual transmission an make it shift like an auto.

I wont be sad. First vehicle, 88 dodge dakota used municipal vehicle, was a manual tranny. Decent little truck, but once I went automatic I never went back. Never even crossed my mind. Having to commute 2hrs every day for a half a decade had me wishing for self-driving vehicles. Time in a vehicle eventually amounted to time wasted for me. My current vehicle (2013 ram 1500) is automatic. I enjoy riding in it, but I can't exactly say I enjoy actually driving vehicles much these days.

I drive 8000 miles a month and rarely leave central Indiana
I love the 6speed manual

I run a 18 titan xd and it does everything better than the 3 ford f150's i had..tows great..no issues what so ever..i was gonna get the diesel version but the gasser version is good enough for me..i run falken wildpeak tires..have not had to run 4 wheel drive while driving in a ft of snow..these tires have the right combo for all around driving..when i tow i get about 13mpg and reg. Driving i get under 18 barely

I could drive from Florida to Tennessee and not use the clutch except for stop lights and unexpected traffic in my 7.3 truck.... Float shift with a diesel is so easy..... Almost just like an auto... But unlike an auto with the high compression of the diesel you can use the transmission instead of your brakes 50% of the time....a down shift slows you down quick

The other Fummins I had with the dual disk it was faster to not use the clutch while shifting gears. Ever manual I have driven if at the correct Rpm you can shift without using the clutch. Manual transmissions in heavy duty trucks are non synchro transmissions an you only use the clutch to start an stop.
As far as using gears to slow you down with an auto if I can lock the torque converter an keep it locked it will do the same when slowing down. That's what tow haul mode is doing in the newer automatic trucks.
Automatic transmissions are not what they used to be in 3/4 an 1 ton trucks. I would attribute most failures with autos in diesel trucks is brought on by the user adding to much tuning an trashing them. The aftermarket has really got things dialed in with them. I have had several manual transmission trucks. My current one is a 1995 f350 with a 12V an nv4500. Will be converting it to auto once I decided on which one. Torn between 4r100 or 6 speed allison.

Agreed
And I consistently tow 10,000 lbs and my truck is almost 3 years old. My brake pads are still 60%
Downshift and exhaust brake
Great combo !

For what you want..honestly cant go wrong with a titan xd..will do everything you want and has the size and room you need plus you can slap a 5th wheel rig on it no problem..certain XD models has it included

After driving a Titan XD this last weekend and due to my long legs, I have come to the conclusion that I do not want a center console. So I'm adding that as a criteria - 40/20/40 split front seat. This also adds flexibility on hunting trips. We usually have 6 guys and two trucks. One year one truck had a transfer case go out so we spent the week hunting out of my F150 which fortunately seated 6. Put 5000 miles on that truck that trip.
So, for now, I've narrowed it down to either an F250 or Nissan Titan XD both in gas. They have the option for a front bench, crew cab, and 6.5' bed.
