Talk me out of a diesel or help me pick!

I shouldn't rule out the Nissan altogether as the gasser in XD would still be an option.
Do the Tundra's not have an option for a 6.5' bed? That would be a deal breaker too - can't stand the baby 5.5' bed in my '03 F-150 now and want the 6.5' option.

I went out specifically looking for the 2007 GMC Sierra classic diesel based on my research at the time. I towed heavy when I owned my farm pulling tractor and equipment. I've since added a 06 Tundra (my hunting truck) that I drive more regularly, especially this time of year. I no longer have a need for the diesel but it's such a good truck, I just can't part with it.

You can get a 6.5' bed with the double cab but not the crewcab (at least that's the way it used to be)

Must be crew cab, sorry Tundra.
I'm with you. Just so you know, Tundra's double cab is really equivalent to my 07 crew cab Sierra. Tundra's crewcab is huge in the backseat area, I had a 2010 that I got rid of because I need to two more weight when I had the farm. That Tundra has been my all time favorite truck even with the 5.5' bed.

I had a crew cab and 6.5 bed was not available. Here are my thoughts on the Tundra:
Pros: bullet proof drive train, solid ride, ample power, build quality was excellent, fit and finish tops
Cons: mpg, short bed, lacking in technology (Toyota’s lag behind most other brands, they stick with what’s proven, good or bad depending how you view it). And I felt like the seating is low to the floor. I’m 6’2” and I prefer the chair height in most American trucks. I felt like the Toyota sat on the floor. That might be just me, but it was noticeable after a while. It also lacked interior storage and under seat storage. Doesn’t sound like much, but it was to me.
I would own another Toyota when they come out with better mpg engines and updated tech. My two cents.

The crew cab has the bigger bed. The “CrewMax” has the small bed. I have the crew max and the cab is cavernous! Rear seats recline. The standard crew cab is typical size of any crew cab with a 6.5’ bed. I would test drive them all. Then ya know.

If Nissan is cancelling the diesel platform, I suspect they didn’t get enough market share for its intended audience. And I’m sure reviews had something to do with it. Like all models, early ones had some problems, but I believe most items were corrected. It’s not for everybody, just an option.

My brother works for a factory that makes parts for Nissan. He said it didn't sell well and was expensive. His dad had one and it didn't get the rated fuel mileage, like 12 MPG. They're actually dropping Nissan and picking up Jeep I believe. He has an 09' Titan that has served him well. I thought the new ones were fugly personally. I have no need for a diesel, but I'd look hard at an F-250 diesel if I needed to haul things.

I have a 2018 Titan XD Diesel Pro4x....6.5 foot bed. It gets 20-22 mpg on the highway and 17-18 in town. Much better than my 12-13 mpg on my Toyota.

I didn’t care for the looks at first, but it grew on me.
I just read reports in the Titan XD diesel being discontinued. If someone wanted a diesel, I wouldn’t be scared of a 2017-2019 XD. The Cummins engine isn’t going anywhere. I doubted it would last their lineup because it wasn’t received well in publications. There are some great deals on these trucks and they are fully capable. If you are on a budget, they are worth a look. The gas model is worthy as well.

I misspoke, mine was 1794 crew max with 5.5 bed.

When I bought my truck I went with the buy once cry once mentality. My camper is 10,000 pounds and my Ram 2500 Cummins handles it way better than my 1500 with 3.73 rear end. I like the diesel and do my own oil changes to minimize cost.

Duramax or Powerstroke. My father bought his retirement truck idk 10 years ago ('08/'09 Duramax 2500) and it still looks brand new in the garage. He uses it to haul around their 25ft 5th wheel toy hauler (Northern California, lots of mountains). That Duramax is a beast!! I don't think it even kicks down a gear when pulling up a hill it seems, turbo just kicks in and off it goes. Hes been happy with his purchase but he may just be trying to justify that $50k haha. One other thing to consider is the under coating of the rig. Out west and down south, I don't believe they coat the undercarriage like they do out east / mid west vehicles as they never have to deal with snow/salt on the roads. I had an '94 Jeep Cherokee I sold 2 years ago that still looked brand new under neath as it hadn't been out east/mid west on the salty roads.

Great discussion so far and not as many emotions involved like I thought might happen. I know quite a few guys are brand loyal and I am to a degree. Ford would be my first choice but I'm not against purchasing any brand if its the right truck for the job. Leaning slightly away from diesel at this point, but could still be pulled back into one. Hmmm.
My old man recently bit the bullet and bought a 2015 Toyota Tundra (less than $30k), and that thing is AWESOME. It's gas, but has tons of power and has been wonderfully reliable. The only downside is the mileage, but he drives an hour to work each way on a two-lane road with lots of traffic. He says the extra gas cost to drive a big truck like that is just like paying for insurance to keep him alive in a wreck. Good logic!

If you absolutely need a diesel, I would look for either (and in no particular order), a Ford 7.3 or a dodge / Cummins 5.9. Both pre-EPA nonsense. Not sure what the Chevy/gmc analog would be.

I have a Cummins 6.7 and put a tuner in it and did the delete. Runs good, no issues. That said, I’d rather be running stock pre-EPA. My buddy has a Ford 7.3 with over 250K and regular maintenance, transmission work and reupholstered the front seat. I would buy that in a minute. I have 150K, it is paid and I’ll drive it as long as I can.

I would be leery about buying used with epa (egr, dpf, def). Who knows how they modified it and if the modifications caused issue with the engine.

With regard to gasser, another friend, who drag races and tows his drag car and equip every weekend for 3/4 of the year has a F250 gasser and loves it.

Good luck on your search.

@DanO it sounds like you favor fords but are open to any brand. South Georgia is full of f250/f350’s many owned by people that never had led anything bigger than their Polaris ranger. There’s enough dodges and Chevrolet’s around to keep it interesting but we don’t have snow or salty roads. Saddlepalooza will be here in a few months. Just shop around and pick one up while you are down this way.

Just researched some used Nissan Titan XD trucks and there are a bunch out there with very low miles. Is that a red flag? I searched in the Texas area and quite a few with 5,000-10,000 miles.
EDIT: Just read that Nissan is discontinuing the Titan XD diesel. Cross that off the list.
I'm a Ford man too but sometimes you have to think different than others in the truck market. The reason I've got an F350 dually is no one wanted the dually with a V10. If it was a diesel, it would have been gone in a minute. I stole mine from a private party in '05 with 27,000 miles for $12.000! I was looking for a 3/4 ton but at the time, one with 90.000 miles was selling for about $18-$19000. The seller told me he'd had it advertised for 2 weeks at $14.000 and never got a call on it. Maybe the Nissan's with low miles, if the trucks are good, might be worth a second look. Not popular means buyers market....

That's a great idea @EricS and I like your thinking @ricky racer. So many options, my heads a spinning. Was thinking for tax purposes might make sense to pick up something before the end of the year. I'm leaning towards newer now as I really don't want to deal with an older vehicle anymore - so many other things start falling apart - I'm dealing with that now with both my vehicles. One is likely going to my son, and my daughter will be driving the Expedition soon, so I'm gonna need to get a new vehicle sooner rather than later.

I paid 49,000 for my 2017 ram 3500 6.7 Cummins
6 speed manual
Flip up center console
Got Bedliner and running boards done for free for buying from the dealer I did

Kernersville dodge is the name in North Carolina
They’ll ship it to ur driveway for $100 also

Makes sense to buy new less headaches
I got a 100k warranty on power train
Mopar parts have a 2 year warranty on the part itself too

Just for the record I was always a ford truck guy til now (gotta have 6speed manual)

Crazy thing is my brother in-law just bought a 18 tundra TRD package (which is a badass truck) for like 56k
More than my powerhouse ram

But honestly that tundra will last a long time
They got one in with 400k on the clock on trade
Still running like a champ
