I wanted to throw some photos up during my trip if anyone is interested, it was initially planned and a fishing/blacktail hunting trip, but due to a death in the family and some weather it's a day to day decision as to what we do. Today started with a quick trip to the range to familiarize myself with my brothers 10mm (bear gun), and plinking a bit with his 22 because why the heck not, something's got to kill these soda cans. My dad and uncle can get a bit... distracted when they are together so we decided it's my job to be on bear alert if we do go hunting(my uncle will be the deer shooter and they are joining us monday) so really getting familiar with the 10mm was the priority. Slightly different than shooting a bow lol. Afterwards we went for a super short hike to see the Mendenhall glacier in Tongas National Forest since a small craft advisory aborted our AM halibut outing plans. My brothers checking in on weather now, if he flies this afternoon I may be able to jump in his glacier tour. Seems like that's probably gonna work, I love it here.Screenshot_20220924-114514.png

Weather hasn't been great, neither has the fishing, but we've caught a few. Dungeness crab has been the best result this far, and they are delicious. Small craft advisory today so we are going to walk the shorelines looking for a black bear to shoot.

What's the regulation for bears? Do they have different tags for male/female? No shooting from boat or near water?
No shooting from boat, if we see one we take tender to shore a few hundred yards away. It's pretty expensive out of state, however I'm pretty lucky to have an Alaska resident as a brother because it significantly lowers the cost (as long as he pulls the trigger), which I am totally fine with. He basically needs to get his hunting license and then he can shoot 5 black bears and 4 deer, just has to have a harvest permit/report. ( No extra cost just has to get the physical paper and cut the date, get the hide sealed for the bear etc afterwards). That's a bit of an oversimplification, but close enough. Future trips where I want to hunt instead of being spotter/hopefully pack mule I'll have to get a license (160 out of state) and then a permit/locking tags for whatever we want to hunt. Deer is 300, bear 1k, moose 1200, muskox is like 3k but I have no interest etc. Then you can shoot any lesser cost animal with your tag if you want, so you can shoot a deer and use your bear locking tag on it, but it's a very expensive deer then. Better than tag soup I suppose. There's extra rules for some animals as well like you have to be with a family member that's a resident, but if not, have to be with a guide for bear. The hunting and fishing regulations books are somewhat long, but go into lots of great detail, and I like how they have regs about meat salvage etc as well.

The different areas up here all have slightly different rega about sex/numbers etc. We can shoot either sex, just haven't been able to make it happen yet. today's my last day here I fly out tomorrow but the rest of the crew stays another week, perhaps they will be able to find fish or bears then. We're making a last push out to a halibut spot right now after getting skunked other than shaker (baby) kings trolling this AM. We saw another bear after that griz but it disappeared into the woods, and then yesterday we hiked a few miles up into the alpine on Douglas Island looking for a deer, but didn't see any, likely the storms that kept us off the water keeps them bedded down pretty tightly.

All in all the trip is panning out as expected, we'd hoped there would still be some fish around but the tail end of the season is proving to be pretty slim pickings. Can't complain, catching rockfish and crab and raising my brothers freezer for fish from earlier in the season has translated to many a delicious meal, even though we aren't filling boxes to bring home like we did last July.

Sounds like your having an awesome trip. Definitely a cool experience. If you ever want to adopt a meat packer for a future trip let me know :)

Well today was a long cold slog in the rain, I definitely wouldn't recommend coming to Juneau to fish this late in the season. In the last hour of my last day I finally caught a (little) halibut. They call em chicken halibut. Far cry from our trip last July (to Ketchikan not Juneau) where we limited out multiple days and each took home hundreds of pounds of fish, but big enough for a nice dinner! While neither the fish nor the bears/deer cooperated, I still had a great trip catching up with my brother, dad, and uncle.

@GCTerpfan we're planning a few trips for the near future, flying out to Adak island to caribou hunt is near the top of the list. If you want in, let's go!

One last post from my Seattle layover... That "little" fish fed 4 of us and still had some left over for today. My brother also hooked me up with some of his coho and halibut frozen fillets from earlier in the season, so as long as my bag doesn't get lost, I'm bringing some fish home for the family after all! What a nice brother I have, I've promised him some venison at Thanksgiving so... Time for me to get back in the woods! ... Well, some time with the kids first, but the woods are calling...
