TEAM 1 Discussion thread

First saddle buck is in the books. Fought myself the entire way out on where to hunt. The night before i set up on a rub line with great deer sign all around. I left my sticks and podium to come back and sit today also. Wind wasnt great and i didnt see anything the night before so i really wanted to go hunt a different spot mainly do to wind. When i got there i climbed up and checked wind and thermals were rising. Guess i am not moving.

I am set up with a hay field 20 yards off to my left and in front of me is a 40 yard wide cattle lane that hasnt been used in 5 years. Nice and thick. Behind me and to my right it drops of into a wooded valley and the bottom is a 20 foot drop off to 20 foot wide gully.

I got on stand at 11 am and didnt really get settled into my saddle before i heard movement coming from my 7 oclock. Slowly looked behind me left shoulder and he was walking on a line 30 yards out. At 10 yards he could cut off to my left or come behind me. He choose to come behind me and passed 4 yards behind my tree. As i turned (left handed) to set up for a 4 oclock shot he looked up right at me...my mind the gig was up (he was 8 yards to my tree) but he kept walking. He had to swing around some trees and as he did i drew back trying to pick a big enough gap in the trees to shoot. I started to think real estate was running low. I stopped him at 22 yards (now at my 2 oclock). He was quartering away and i had a 2 foot gap between trees. I let the meat missle fly and burried it 5 ribs back and i came out infront of the opposite leg. He stubbled down hill 100 yards and i watched him jump off a 20 foot ledge at the bottom of the valley.

This was probably the coolest hunt I've ever had, not because I harvested a deer but because I finally saw what every talks about during rut(or pre rut), a buck chasing a doe. I had shot that doe about and was giving it about 45 minutes, so I was packing up to go look, had my bow and platform strapped to my pack and was standing on my top stick and I hear commotion off to my right. Look and see a doe come crashing through the woods followed by a basket 6. He was softly grunting at her the whole time like heeeey girl, where you going? They ran straight down the creek bottom I was hunting and around my tree then back the same direction they came from. I thought well that was cool. Started climbing down, got one stick on my saddle and they came back. So now I'm standing on the second stick and they play ring around the Rosie again with my tree, then run off. Recover stick number two, I'm standing on my last stick and they come back a third time, not around my tree but run by it.
I'd always read and heard about witnessing rut behavior but didn't ever think I'd see it. Man I'm hooked now! The whole time, especially standing on my bottom stick I thought there's no way they can't see me. Obviously Mr buck just had one thing on his mind and if the doe saw me she probably woulda screamed shoot this fool. Anyway, just thought I'd share. The woods is a marvelous place to be. Even if I hadn't harvested a deer I woulda left satisfied.

So... Confession time... I'm tagged out for bucks, but I did it from the ground tonight.... I put the decoy out at 20 yards and froze my keester off! Watching The Hunting Public pays off :) sadly we can't use the extra point, but I already had an 8 on the board.

It was awesome to watch this guy come in to a decoy after I had been laying in the snow for 4 hours. A forky buck almost ruined it when he saw me put down the camera and pick up my bow. Luckily this buck came back in to a doe bleat a few minutes later. I was finally able to squeeze off a shot in through the saplings after being drawn back for so long.

Now it's up to you guys to get us to first place!

I saw this buck Saturday running a doe at the end of my drive. It was my second day back to work from my rutcation... My wife saw him yesterday morning going to work chasing a doe and he was at my neighbors yesterday afternoon running does. This is my biggest buck todate. I’m super happy, although disappointed at the same time it was not a saddle kill.. He was on my kids food plot looking for does, a double Lung shot was a touch high but he only went about 20 yards. My dad and uncle came to help me get him out. Was an easy recovery as we drove my loader tractor tight to him.. He had a wound on his back left leg that was pretty sizable and a swollen foot. I will get us another 5 points on a doe before the year is done..

Congratulations on everyone’s deer. They look awesome! I have spent the past two and half weeks hunting with two new hunters. I have left my weapon at the house to make sure I didn’t use it. It was an awesome two weeks put a guy that has never shot at a deer with in 6 yards a good 8pt he make a great shot dropped him in his tracks. Says he is now hooked for life and will continue in the sport. Put a buddies son who has hunted hard this season with no luck on a 4 pt behind the house. Not the biggest deer to any of us but the look on that boys face was priceless. I sat them in the only stand I have left on my property. I climbed Up a tree about 10 yards behind them in the saddle just to watch. The buck came from behind me and walked under me straight to them passed 6 yards away and when it got in front of them lil man did his part. I’ll be hunting hard the last month or so of season now I know I’ll be good for 5 more points for my doe I’ll try and upgrade my buck. Although I haven’t carried my weapon in the woods it was great to sit back and watch two new hunters get a love for our sport!

Tagged out in Ohio for the year..
added 5 more points for this doe.. has been a good year. Sorry my buck didn’t count for us.

Killed this buck this morning. 9 pointer. Been hunting him all year but he would always be in a different area in front of a camera every time. This morning he came in checking a doe at 35 yards. 7mm right through the heart and he ran maybe 25 yards.
