Team 10 Thread

Light and variable winds always make me so indecisive... I need a change of scenery though. Giving the area I've been hunting a break until Monday when I'll have a better wind to get back in there. Using this morning to get some stuff done around the house that I've been putting off since the season started, then gonna take a walk with my bow later and scout some new areas. Have a good plan for tomorrow afternoon to hunt one of my honey holes where I've killed bucks the last 2 years early season. Good luck to you guys out this morning!

Still up in a tree for at least another hour but it’s not looking too good. Bumped 3 deer on the way in, had a hunter walk up on me who wouldn’t respond to the normal whistle and flashlight strobe so I had to yell at him 10 minutes before legal shooting light. That didn’t help. So far had one doe skirt my set up at a little over 50 yards out. Goal is to get down and scout my way to the evening set up. Hopefully y’all are doin better!

Small buck at first light....Got down at 9.. Hunting a swamp edge back toward the truck. Tuna sub in the cooler is going to be delicious.... I'll be back tomorrow...

2 of these would make a delicious dinner... The other would put you in the hospital...

Struck out last night y’all. Bumped one deer on way in for evening sit and then didn’t see a thing after. Can we get points for bumping deer while wearing a saddle? I’m good at that. I’ll be back in the woods Monday evening though. And now I’m really mad at em.

The Saturday sit was on the high ground maybe 50yds from the swamp edge. My plan worked almost perfect....I was set up early and had deer blowing in all directions and had an unknown number come by in the dark...at first light there was a buck out kinda far but heading my way and I am jacked up...he works over and I see he's not legal and even if he had 1 more point I think I wouldn't have shot. He eventually ends up 13yds and stops for a pretty broadside and then works off never smelling me. I hear lots of activity on the swamp edge but I can't see the edge from my tree. Get down at 9 and scout/hunt back toward the truck. At the truck at noon

Sunday I go to a spot maybe 100yds from yesterday's tree where the swamp "Y"s and a bunch of trails converge. A big doe and tiny doe walked within bow range 5 minutes after it was light enough to see. I didn't pick up the bow. The bag limit on this hunt is 1 deer, male or female, but only 1 so I'm kinda being picky...if I was allowed a buck and doe like most hunts I would have shot at the big doe. Nothing else moving and I'm down at 9 and scouting/hunting back toward the truck. I crossed the swamp and found a large rolling hilly area with some big oaks and a large area of super thick young pines that I know is definite bedding. At the truck at noon

It's gonna be hard keeping the wife happy this season I can tell already.....she's normally cool with pretty much whatever I wanna do as far as hunting goes and leaves me be....but this weekend the texts are coming in early and frequent. I going to try to hunt a evening or 2 during the week but I may be pushing it with that...we'll see

sounds like you’re on em. I hear you on balancing hunting with family. That is the hardest part. Been trying to hold to one date night per week with the wife but it always seems to happen during the best possible hunting weather! Anyway after helping my brother in law finish some construction projects yesterday I’m free to hunt this afternoon. Hope we at least get on the board with a doe tonight.

Working up in those oaks by the bedding there was lots of buck scrapes...there has been another vehicle parked in the entrance that is closer to that bedding area. The wind has consistently been N NW even though the internet says N NE. The river dictates the wind The way it all lays out that other guy parks within 200yds up wind of that thick bedding. If I access coming up from the swamp I'll be on the downwind side of all that. I am betting the deer look/listen to that parking lot.... The most deer sign I've found so far has been close to the road but in hard to access pockets

I saw at least 8 scrapes with 1 being hit that night/morning. I didn't find any boot tracks or flagging tape. The oaks have sporadic acorns. Plan for next time I can go, is to first verify west wind and then go tether in at ground level on the slope that the swamp high ground transition line falls on....just high enough up the slope to see over but still be mostly hidden. Take my binoculars and just view the oak flat...it pretty open with some little pines and clumps of palmetto mixed in.....so I should be able to see if any deer are popping out of the pine thicket bedding area and then either stalk in or mark on the map and be in a tree closer next time....

Urgent help needed!!! Let me know which option you’d go with. Got to some public pretty early today so I could scout my way in. I would like to get set up within next hour or so.

option 1: bumped 3 good size does with fawns on my way in. Was a soft bump they just caught my movement but not my wind. I saw which direction they went and I suspect they’ll be back to what they were feeding on this evening.

option 2: kept scouting since it was early and found an isolated red oak dropping right next to a persimmon dropping. Very fresh scout and tracks in the area.

which one is my set up?!!

With persimmons I would definitely choose Option 2.. let us know how it goes

Kinda what I was leaning towards too. I just kinda felt like I was leaving a bird in the hand since I knew those other deer were actually there. But no guarantee they’d show back up in daylight.

Prolly option 2 as well. Even with a soft spook like that there’s no guarantee they’ll be back. Good fresh sign would be my advice.
Good luck!

Wind wasn't right to go up into the oaks so I just took off hunting the wind. I saw a doe in a clearing and watched her for a while contemplating if I wanted to sneak over and try to kill her....I decided against it and watched her till she moved off. I sat in an area where I could watch a thick pine area, a swp.behind me, and a very far view of a managed field. The wind swirled in everywhich direction and I wasn't really confident. Got down a little early and walked a different way back just to see what's what...saw a couple deer in the headlight.
Walking in a saw a big water moccasin and went over to check it out and less than a foot away was an even bigger water moccasin. The smaller (still 2ft +) was black and the bigger 1 was awesome light brown almost like a copperhead.....also...on the the drive in the afternoon on private land was a flock of turkeys and they were like no other turkeys I've seen before....the colors were so brilliant almost like a dang peacock....good dayScreenshot_20210928-183323_(1).pngScreenshot_20210928-183309_(1).png

Sounds like we are getting back into hunting mode slowly. I blew it tonight. I decided to hang a camera in the area with the lone oak and persimmon and while I was messing around with that I had several deer walk right up on me. This Is at 3:45 pm! My fault for not setting up when I should have but I thought I still had time. Since this was a hard bump with tons of blowing and they actually saw me, I decided to hike back to the original area where I bumped the first set of deer and set up. Those deer popped out eventually but stayed 60 yards away until all shooting light faded. Fun hunt saw a lot of deer but still came home with zero.

I hate snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes.

I don't mind them at all...I enjoy seeing them...that big brown 1 was so cool..I've only seen them that color when they are small. I interrupted then about to do something... Why else would they be a foot away from each other? Maybe big guy looking for a meal or a fight or mating? I don't know but it was cool seeing them. I understand peeps are afraid and don't judge but I can't stand it when the peeps on public land will kill them and just leave them to rot....couple seasons ago I found a huge 16-20 inch coral snake someone had killed...I'm no snake expert but I pretty sure they are rare.. That was maybe the 3rd one I've ever seen..
U can expect to encounter a venomous snake every time u go into the woods around here....they don't want to bite u and go way out of their way not to... Unless u hunt with a climber...then they all want to bite u
