Anyone heading into the woods this weekend? I'm just checking some cameras due to warm temps and planning on next weekend for the first hunt of the year.
I'll plan to hunt sunday, in WV. They open tomorrow, however I just have some things to take of and I dont have any solid plans for attacking the early season there. So I'll just take my time getting into it so I'm not burning spots before they get hot.

Well saw a spike and a couple coyotes tonight but had to leave at prime time for an “emergency” lol everyone’s fine...accept my hunting night

Hoping to get out Monday night, got two tactacam cell cams in the mail today and put them out at our new place excited to see what’s lurking around here.

Looks like quite a setup. you don't find the pine loud getting up and down and moving on the tree? I have never used a saddle in one but from squirrel hunting I know you can hear a limb rat from a good distance.

Well, I got Skunked on stand tonight. Thought it was going to be a perfect situation. Left the parking lot at 3:15. Light rain started about 3/4 mile into the walk. Was set up about 4:30 and the rain significantly more aggressive at this point. I learned that my camo rain coat is now just a camo coat. Let’s just say it is only moisture resistant these days. As I was expecting, the rain stopped at 5:30 just in time for prime-time. I was set up on the edge of a swamp in an oak flat and was expecting the deer to pile out of the bedding after the rain stopped but no such luck. The acorn crop is really light this year in that spot.

On a positive note, a small 8 crossed the road in front of me as I was driving home. It was heading onto public on the other end of the property pretty close to where I killed my buck last year. Just waiting on the right wind to hit that area.

Well fellas I shot a doe tonight but the hit was sub par. Liver and guts. I’m gonna go find her in the am and hope the coyotes haven’t eaten her. But if all goes well meat will be good and we’ll be on the board.

Hope you find her and the coyotes don’t!

I am not to fond of the pines but for what it was it wasn’t to bad. Was more or less a last minute spot to try.

Saturday evening, wife gave me the go ahead to have an "unplanned" sit, meaning she wasnt gonna be home and neither were the kids! I got setup late but I knew that the area I was getting was traveled right at closing time.... I played it conservatively, as I kinda just wanted to observe as this was my first sit, I was set and ready to go in the tree by 440. I was setup 30 yards inside of a powerline that ran across some real steep country, I was setup to watch the power line and cover a terrain funnel incase something moved through below me. At 630, I caught a tail flicker working the steep "open" powerline at 80ish yards, I threw the binos up only to loose sight of it before I could see what it was, then I started hearing brush and sticks hitting antler! I start scanning the powerline to catch a glimpse of a real good 10point heading down to me(same deer I saw the tail flick), i loose sight of him and he never resurfaces, gone like a ghost, not a sound, just poof, I never saw him closer than 80 yards, but man did it get me pumped! Probably wont make it back out until thursday or friday afternoon...... gonna be a long week!

Well quick update... not great, actually just about worst case scenario. I went back in this morning and of course it started pouring rain. I went back and found her by following the trail she took. When I walked up she popped her head up and was still alive but couldn’t or wouldn’t get up. So the wma I shot her on is on a military installation and that part is closed to hunting today so I didn’t have my bow or pistol which I carry when not hunting on base. If I had anything bigger than my skinning knife I would have took care of it then but a 2” blade would have been a rough. I have to work this morning but I’m going to go back and see if she expired this afternoon. It’s still pouring rain and we have a flash flood warning...what a nightmare. The only good thing is I know there’s a buck back in this area that’s potentially a booner and I found his exit trail from bedding. Aside from that...
