Killed a sweet gum sapling this morning don’t know if I will hunt this evening or track a buddies gut shot deer.

That is never a good thing

Nothing again today. I've been mostly going in blind due to the fact that all the oak groves I had scouted out are bare of acorns. For some reason, this is a terrible year for acorns in this area--if I can find any, I think I may strike gold.

Sorry for the late check in boys I’ve been slammed at work. I’m a TN resident and season opened yesterday. No deer yet. I got some good ones I’m after though. Had a rough weekend in August in the velvet hunt here. Shot my #2 at last light and hit him high in the scapula. Back on camera 3 days later so the game is still on.... I’m headed to Ohio Monday for the week. Cold front is moving in Tuesday there!

I'm a big o'fer. Been out 8 times - seen very little. Most spots have fresh sign, so either my timing's off or too much movement.
Oaks are loaded with acorns around here. Thought I might need a hardhat sitting in an oak tree yesterday afternoon.

I wish I was a headlight on a north-bound train

I just slammed a doe. Need the meat! Pics soon...

ATTA BOY! I sat yesterday (saw 2 bucks and 3 does) and this morning in NH (a pile of does) and not once could I get a shot at anything!!! :rage: I got tons of good footage of a doe bedded at 30 yards behind some fir and beech trees. Too risky for a shot though. Back at it tomorrow night after work, wind is good and weather front coming over the next couple days.

Weather front lifts Wednesday night and temps plummet Thursday mid-morning, Thursday afternoon, temps dive even harder around 5 p.m. Also, I'll finally get the North wind I've been waiting for to hunt the edge of this nasty swamp that holds big deer, and plenty of them...

Good luck boys, stacking season starts soon! Don't stress, it's still early!

What oaks are they? If they're red oaks they don't like to eat them until later on. The best early season oaks to hunt over are white oaks but if they're everywhere you're still at square one. Good luck

We don't have white oaks in SW NH. At least not around me.

Well, I missed the heck out of this when it got started.

Congrats on the dead deer already. @EricS, weren't we on the same team last year?

I could have put one on the board last night with the .22mag while I was squirrel hunting. Didn't have the saddle on me though, so I figured the poaching charge wasn't worth it. ;)

Yes we were on the same team last year. @Wirrex was on team 8 with us also. I came into this season thinking it was going to be a killer year. Then I realized half these weekends out of town hunting are youth hunts. I guess I’ll have to make the rest of them count.

That's ok. I'm going back to Portland Landing twice, and I put in for the Oak Mountain hunts this year too. I'll kill an extra buck for you and we'll just photoshop ya in.

My season has been off a slow start. Opening morning around 645am another hunter walked down the run way the buck I was targeting(only daytime mover) was using. the buck had been going back to bedding around 7-730am. He hasn't gone by the camera since. Its been way too hot recently and most movements been during dark. I could have taken a 45 yard shot on a old doe but figured id get a better opportunity for a meat deer later. Ill be back after it next Fri - Sun.

Back at it tonight down in a swamp... First sit in this piece/first time in this piece...period. Only scouted it from satellite imaging. Lots of visible runs coming off an island and peninsula piece. I will be on the oaks with the wind at my face just outside of them... Here goes nothing.
