Team 2 Thread

The rule reads that in a multi-deer zone, you can only take (1) buck. I read it to mean a buck could be taken with any tag. However, only the first tag can be used for a buck. Here's the caveat, you do not need to fill your tags in order. I now know for next year you buy (2) tags immediately. If I get a doe, use my bonus tag to her and leave my main tag open for a buck.

I now don't feel like I'm cheating quite as much by sticking with the bow but am only good for another 5 points for the team.

You can still tag a buck with your gun tag. But since you punched your either sex archery tag on a doe, you’re antlerless only for archery.

I hold an either sex archery tag, firearm tag, and muzzleloader tag. I can only take one buck total for the year, but can do it with either tag.

You’re strategy regarding the 2 tags immediately and using the bonus in a doe is correct, however, that doesn’t mean you can’t shoot a buck with your gun tag!

ugh that's annoying (meaning for you, don't worry about the team points, heck i'm still sitting on a goose egg for now because i shot my first deer from the ground), but good on you for following the rules even though they dont make much sense! I jsut had to verify that i have the muzzleloader stamp for my license so i can hunt this weekend with my bow. rules is rules, but they sure are strange sometimes.

Let me try to explain it a little better, with the caveat that I am not law enforcement or anything.

Minnesota is a one-buck state, meaning you can only take one buck per year. You take it on day 1 or archery, you’re done for the rest of the year. Either sex licenses are sold by weapon, so you can buy an archery, gun, and muzzleloader, or any combo of that. Either sex licenses are only valid during the specific weapon’s season. So you can’t use your gun tag in archery season or whatever. Then there are bonus antlerless, and those are valid across all three seasons.

So, you buy your archery license, and gun license. Both are either sex. You take a doe in archery, and you use your either sex tag (totally legal) and you can’t take a buck in archery season because you don’t have a valid tag. However, once gun season comes in, your gun either sex is valid and you have not met the one buck per year limit, so you can take a buck, just be aware of the type of zone you’re in. Or another doe, again, as long as you are in a zone where it’s legal to do so.

The best thing, as you already mentioned, is to have a bonus antlerless tag in addition to those either sex tags. Then, you use the bonus on your antlerless and preserve your buck tag for later.

It’s still kind of confusing, but hopefully that makes sense!

@MN_Bowhunter4, so what you're saying is that even if I hunt the same zone and burned my 1st archery tag on a doe, I can still fill my gun tag with a buck???

If so, games back on boys!
That’s correct. As long as you’re hunting in a 2 deer or more zone. Just be aware of that.

You can also buy a bonus permit (if you don’t already have one) , take a doe on that with your gun, and hold out for a buck if you feel so inclined! Again assuming the zone allows you to do that.

I’m a little perplexed how the person who you spoke to didn’t know this! Did you speak to an actual officer, or just some desk wrangler who answers the info email address?

ill be out on saturday, archery only zone but looks like i'll still have to wear orange because it's muzzleloader season. currenly debating between maximizing my time in the woods (meaning getting up at 4 to be in a tree before the sun comes up) vs waiting til sunup and scouting on the way in/ walking to find better sign like many have been reccomending. if i do walk in at dark i'll scout 10-12 or something to set up for the afternoon.

Temps ate finally starting to drop with potential for overnight snow showers this weekend. It’ll be 2 weeks before I head out again but here’s hoping for 40 degree highs and 20 degree lows.

Good luck guys. I won’t be able to get out till next weekend for a couple days, then I’ll be headed to Kentucky Nov 5-14. I’ll be bowhunting the first 6 days then be on a gun quota hunt the last 3 days, so something is bound to die.

Last night of work for me then 21 days to hunt will get an arrow in something… may get us some doe points tomorrow depending on where I hunt… I told the wife she can have me one evening for family pictures and one afternoon for trick or treat other then those activities I’ll be in the woods… really looking forward to some time away from work.

I just found out that I have trunk or treat obligations tomorrow evening so looks like I'm doing a morning/midday hunt tomorrow.

Night 1 of 21

Went out to the big farm that I don’t have a ton of time on. Had a game plan to work up a creek bed and hang on first good fresh sign I saw… came across a few scrapes and some small rubs.. Ended up working farther than I wanted so I walked up and hit the field that I assume is the destination after dusk. Walked the edge of it and nothing screamed at me..

I went in pretty early so at this point I decided to blow the area up get some Intel and go hunt a pre set tree down the road…

I found a pretty amazing buck bed. It must be a historic buck bed location as there was a fresh big bed and probably 30-50 rubs within eye sight.. rubs were from this year and years prior. it sets up for a west wind at his back. This particular spot is a hayfield the owner let go as it’s only a couple acres and hard to get equipment in… I found a couple spots on the perimeter of the grown up field I could access from a current production hay field with every wind other than a southernly wind… I bumped a few deer on this excursion and also could have whacked two different does that I snuck up on.

So those spots were marked on onX and I headed down the road to another piece of their property… this particular little oak flat is surrounded by corn. On my way in I bumped a couple little Bucks and a doe… was in the tree by 430… I had a small doe come in. A little before last light I saw a buck in the cut bean field 100 yards away..

Boy has regional cross country meet and the. I’ll be back in a tree tomorrow night… Debating on setting up closer to the corn cut bean field edge or another small wood lot surrounded by corn. Depends on what the combine does tomorrow.

I'm out in a new area, set up near some scrapes/rubs that led to what I thought was a bedding area (as best I could tell in the dark without walking in to it) but so far nothing has come out of it.

Nothing for me today. I have family stuff tonight so got out of the tree around 11:30 after seeing a coyote or two but not getting a shot. Scouted around and found some decent intel for next time, as well as some crazy 2 mile long spraypainted trail

The woods were completely dead for me this morning. Didn’t even see a squirrel. Already seeing those things running around this afternoon, so we will see what happens.
