Team 3 2019

I was out Saturday evening and again saw about 20 deer but all were 55 yards or farther. Had my first negative encounter with WE steps and soft bark and had to work my way down basically 1 stepping it with my predator platform. Most comfortable I’ve been in my saddle yet though. Hoping to get out Friday and fling an arrow. Bound to happen soon I’d hope

Dude, that's a serious doe you got there...them great white north whitetails got some serious size... great job, 5 more on the board!!

Regarding the temps and butchering...
If you have large cooler and want to age it or just dont have the time to complete the butchering, you can quarter her out wrap it in trash bags and cover it in ice in the cooler. You can keep it like this for a couple days!
Great job on the first kill of the year!!

That is a great suggestion on the cooler. I like that move.
I got things sorted out here.

What happened? You lost a WE Step?

It kicked out bad on the way up. I was running late and rushing. Having trouble with the ropes for some reason and the tree was giving me fits. Luckily I use my lineman’s belt as you should and after a real good bear hug on the tree I got situated and finished my set up but the step was still crooked. I use and knaider/swaider and it just seemed easier (and I was curious) to slide the platform down a couple feet at a time til I could take that step off and then get down to the next one.

100% my fault. When you set those steps correctly they’re locked in hard I just did a poor job

I have a confession team.... I shot a doe from my saddle today but forgot the whole saddle photo thing because it was so hot and I was worried about getting her processed...
I guess I have to go shoot some more!

Congratulations on your doe. Glad you were able to get your venison on ice quickly. What part of Middle Tennessee are you from? My dad lives in Sequatchie County, Tennessee and he says it's been pretty warm down there.

Be careful, take your time. Not worth a fall, that **** hurts and the ground comes at you quick.

Well fellas, things have not gone how i the way that i had hoped so far this year. Aside from a great first sit, i,ve made nothing but mistakes since. I think im starting to over think it a bit, so ive taken a step back and a few days away from hunting and hoping that helps me get back in the game... I misjudged the wind and bumped some deer, i got to agressive and bumped a buck, i stayed put on a bad wind, and got a late start on a day that deer were on the move all day, only hunted the evening...... Luckily, i have plenty of spots to hit yet, but most of those spots ive not yet been to this year, so i am only going off of sign from the post season scouting, historical movements, or just plain mapping...... The good news is i saw i descent 9 pointer last night on the way home from work, and one of the spots i sat on the bad wind might not have been as bad as it could have been. The deer were on their feet all day in the cool temps and light rain, so i might not have blown the bedding out if they were already moved out for the day! 5 days into the season and i am digging myself a nice hole.....
Hows the hunting going for everyone else, any one starting to see some cruising yet? Good luck to all!

Stay at it. It’s a constant learning process. I’ve made some mistakes this year too but I’ve stopped looking at those as mistakes and just file it to the memory bank as a lesson learned that will help me on a future hunt.

Friday evening around 9 pm I turned onto a dirt road and saw two nice 8 point bucks (120"+) cross the road together coming from a huge private CRP field heading to a private cornfield. Both properties bordered public lands on the East side. I know it was late and they probably weren't bedded nearby but didn't have much else to go on in this area. Hoping they might come back the way they came; I went in at first light so I could see and not stumble around in the dark looking for a place to hang-out. I was rewarded with some good sign but nothing else except a relaxing sit until about 3pm. I had business to attend to and had to pack it in for the day. Wouldn't you know it,... the cold snap had deer on their feet early in the evening feeding in just about every AG field on the way back to camp. All deer seen were on private land and seemed to be still in their summer routine.
Better luck next time. ???;)

Dude, I was going to write the same damn message!
Opening day the weather report called for severe thunderstorms which I determined were going to go north of us - wrong. In my saddle when that storm hit I became a soaked tether ball! Then the next sit the weather report said North wind, but in the spot I went to is was pushing more east - I blew out two does coming in exactly how I wanted them to - but then was too stubborn/idiotic to relocate. Then I had Mexican food for lunch before an afternoon hunt and made all kinds of "noise/scent" the whole sit - I couldn't stop. Then I forgot my book. Then I dropped/lost my grappling hook. Then I sweated out all my freshly washed scent free gear.

The whole damn season has been an episode of "First time hunter - Northern edition".

Well boys, we got it done last night! This is my first official saddle buck after having put down several does from my DIY set up. No chance I could've sat in the big walnut tree I chose and not been detected without this saddle. Incredible hunt, deer running everywhere, and a short blood trail to find this guy. It was pain to get set-up in this spot but I knew it was my best bet to be in that tree in particular so I rigged it all up and had him down within a couple of hours. My arrow didn't pass through but clipped both lungs, center-punched liver, and nicked the stomach. He broke the arrow off inside him and it got jumbled up. We saw the nock glowing through his hide before we saw him. One of the craziest things I've seen on a deer track. Made sure to get a pic with the saddle in it this time!

That's crazy! I can honestly say I've never seen that before. Congratulations on a really nice buck @BackSpasm!
