Team 3 2019

Nothing for me on Sat. morning. I sat on the bedding area I saw a buck going into on Thurs. Nada. One thing about mornings here is the fickle nature of the morning thermals. Honestly that buck can check the wind 360 deg. and not move out of his bed. I think I have to move back a bit. I have some ideas. I'll see how they pan out.

I'm back on that bedding area. I'm hoping he's in there and he comes north. One thing for sure I have a way better wind situation then I did on Saturday. Fingers crossed.

Well after 3 straight days of grid searching, I've given up the search... he is dead somewhere, only way I'm gonna find him now is by buzzards or coyotes... I cant say for sure that I would have found if I got on blood immediately but I feel I'd have had a better chance... so the story goes like this... I was hunting from the ground and going after a doe. Well, I got a broadside shot on a doe at 19 yrds and hit the mark. Although, she didnt go down, she stood there clueless. I saw blood starting from my entry wound and she started to squat and stagger, this caught the attention of a spike. He ran her 20 yards or so in a C shape. All of a sudden, hear a loud aggressive grunt/roar, from out of sight to my left. The spike blew and hightailed it out of the area. This heavy bodied heavy antlered buck comes into view @ 30yrds heading straight for my doe,(still standing ish) and noses her back towards the thin treeline that I'm in. They make it to the treeline and I anticipated they would push through it. So I make a slow move to turn around and prep for a shot, only they never make it through. She fell right at the transition. I worked down the opposite side to maybe get a shot, I spot the buck trying to work this doe, but had no opening, I was only 8 yrds or so. So I work back down to where I was orginally, as I could easily cut through to the same side they were on.. I start working towards him on the same side and got to 21 yrds and got nervous that I may spook him. I positioned myself to clear any brush for a shot and let an arrow fly. Boom. My arrow tucked in tight to the shoulder, and does not pass through. He initially reacted to the noise of the shot, but then realized I was there and hightailed it, darn near floating the 40 yards to the nearest cover. I decided to back out and call my cousin for help, having two down, I'd need a little assistance. I did this only after checking the radar for rain, none on the scope. I make it back home to drop gear and wait for the calvary, boom monsoon begins and doesn't let up... so we hustle back out, after 45mins of downpour we still found blood! But the rain was relentless..... I eventually lost blood to the rain with the last blood being pinkish water on a monkey ball (osage orange fruit). We searched until 1130ish. Went back out at it the next two days immediately after work grid searching for a body. The cover ed r was soooooo thick I could have been within 15 yards of him and never seen him... one the second day I offset my search pattern by about 10 yards in the Hope's that would help me cover what I couldn't see the days prior. Nada... I went about 800 yards searching like this, I couldn't imagine him going further than that, with the shot placement I remember seeing... I dunno stranger things have happened I suppose. No I have to gather myself again and get back at hunting... I dunno how, its gonna be tough just moving on...

It happens to all of us, only thing we can do after an honest effort to recover the deer is try to learn from the experience and get better. Sounds like an exciting hunt. Not recovering the deer, well that just sucks. Good luck the rest of the season.

Sorry to hear that. It's a hard pill to swallow, especially if we did everything we're supposed to do. As stated it does happen, and we move on. I remember every deer I've ever wounded over my bow hunting career. it never gets easier.

Yea, this is true, but neither would have counted towards the contest given I shot both from the ground, but the hunt itself was crazy exciting i couldn't believe how focused he was on her even after she finally fell...

I’ve been on a shotgun hunt where a buck was tailing a doe on a November morning. Guy has to shoot a doe before being buck eligible. Shoots doe and she drops. Buck tries to do his business with her while she’s dead on the ground before the hunter could finally shoot the buck as well. When it’s on for them it’s ON and nothing else matters lol

Update on the "blue" island previous post.

If you remembered @Kurt had recommended I parachute in, but ultimately I felt like that was unsporting so I walked in moving towards a tree I had identified and setup on my last visit (I am running bolts here - they are legal) - red X. With the SW wind, I was hoping I could get in and not disturb the deer in the potential bedding spots. I am walking in around 2pm kind of hugging the shoreline - yellow arrow.

When I get to the head of the yellow arrow I see a doe 30yrds to my east right at the edge of the cattails. I freeze. Then emerges a dandy buck. I'm not in the business of scoring deer in the field but this guy was solid. Anyhow, these deer have heard me but aren't bolting. The buck turns and looks like he heads back into the cattails - to which I figure that is the last I'll see of him. The doe is staring at me. Finally after what seems like an eternity, she puts her head down and I moved behind a big oak. From there I peer out. After a few min she moves out of sight - I can't tell what direction (it is thick there). I decide to pull out, and start moving back slowly...

There pops out the doe, now fully busting me she shoots SW. The big buck follows. I put my head down thinking about the baloney that put me in an hour later than I wanted to be. When I look back up, there is a nice 6 pointer that I hadn't seen before standing where the doe had been. Still no reasonable shots. After a short pause, he follows the path of the doe. Sure enough, a few seconds after that a 4th and final smaller buck follows. Had I been in earlier the lot of them would have passed right by my target tree on their way N...

So, I blew it - but confirmed there are some bucks in the area, but I blew it.

The orange army comes through the area Monday, and I leave for rifle camp up north Sunday morning so at best I will get another crack at this spot later in Nov if at all.

I guess I should have parachuted in.

You came it out with more knowledge than you went in with. Successful trip in my book. Worst case you've got a dang good plan for next year.

Finally out for my 4th sit of the season. I haven’t been much of a teammate this year. My life is one great big giant mess right now. Anyhow, the wind was good for this spot. I have had a few encounters with some nice bucks so I made the trip. Left the truck just as it was getting light so I figured I would slowly creep in and glass the marsh as I went. Followed a nice deer highway and just as I was coming out of the dogwood and into another patch of marsh grass I spot a nice shooter. He has a doe and although they didn’t wind me they may have spotted me. The buck moved off to the left. I figure he may work down wind so I slowly retreat only to have a doe standing behind me at about 50yds. She turned and slowly walked away not knowing what I was. That’s when I see she has a shooter of her own in toe. They both work off into the marsh with my wind just missing them. With a buck on either side of me I decide to sit in a bush and wait. Nothing happened so I proceeded to the oak ridge I wanted to hunt. As I stepped out from the dogwood there is the first buck standing on the side of the hill. He bolted. His doe went the other direction. I went in another 200 yards on a rub line hoping to catch another cruising, or the same buck circling to find his doe. Haven’t seen anything but two fawns since but it sure is nice to be out in the November woods.

Sounds like a fun hunt!

Well had a heck of a long weekend to hunt. Went at it fri sat and mon. Fri didnt produce, saturday I started late and didnt get out until 715, sat until 130, as I was packing up, a doe came in to 37 yards and I got it done. Watched her fall. Now i was in a saddle for this one, but I took no pictures..... I suck at this.. lol. Saw 13 deer saturday. Monday went back at it again came very close on a real nice 7pt, he caught my wind and didnt come any closer then 46yds, but he didnt bust outa there as I had does directly below me. Saw 17 throughout the evening, Including 5 bucks.

Got a doe this evening. Haven't hunted my property yet this year, no good reason, just like leaving the house. I had a camera up on my field and got a nice buck the other day, decided to hunt him. This afternoon before I had pulled my gun up , a doe came off her bed and cruised around my tree. Wind was horrible s d she blew and ran off twice, coming back after 15 min or so. Started to get dark and no other deer in sight, needed some meat for the fridge and some points for the team. Got it done, not an easy shot , about 7'o'clock over left shoulder through some thick stuff. Double lung, heart shot with the ML, 48 yds, nice clean kill on a healthy deer, can't ask for anything better. I'm gonna add the trail cam pic of the backyard buck.

Got another one this afternoon. 7 pointer, brow tine was broke off. He was chasing some does. Had to thread the needle, he was chasing in some thick stuff and had a narrow shot window. I just saw antlers and a big body so I took the shot. He was quartering twords me a little, got a good entry, clipped bottom of both lungs and liver but exited through the stomach. He only ran 15 yards.Hadn't field dressed a gut shot deer in a while.....

Lots of chasing going on, good cold front came in today, dropped 35 degrees since yesterday. After the shot, within 20 min i had 7 does back around my tree. Lots of action, saw deer the entire time, 12 total. Gonna take day off tomorrow. Deer hanging out back overnight.

I had a great day. Cold and windy, saw alot of deer and this one came into bow range. I am blessed to be able to take this deer. I have had a blast learning to hunt from a saddle. This has been a great experience. Fun hunt.Screenshot_20191108-233116_Gallery.jpg

Congrats everyone!

I hunted hard Thursday and Friday. Thursday I rattled in a real nice 8 but he came straight to my tree. How they pinpoint sound will never cease to amaze me. He saw me in the tree but didn’t spook hard. Kinda bounced away and went around me. I let him get out 50 yards then snort wheezed and he ripped around to come back in. Unfortunately the wind picked up and he got me. Saw 4 other bucks but they were all smaller. Switched it up for the afternoon and saw a few does before the rain started. When it did the wind switched so I got down. Did some scouting for my dads hunt Friday when he was gonna pull and all dayer. There’s a normal patch of woods we never hunt until this time of year so I went and checked it out. Found a couple trails around a downed part of a fence and a scrape where we’d both seen a big buck. Picked a tree and sent him the waypoint.

Friday he had one little buck under him at daybreak then nothing til 4:30. Then this guy came in and my dad smoked him after he worked that scrape. I’ve helped my buddy and dad shoot one now I need to get it down myself.

Meanwhile I saw 9 does Friday and no bucks in the morning other than one with about 3 inches of antler. Moved spots mid day and only saw two more. I’ll be out Tuesday, Friday, and next Monday hoping to drop a few.

In other news, I’m completely sold on the saddle. Still need some practice with my stepps or I’m gonna end up with beast sticks.

Got video of this guy on my favorite public piece, just need to get lucky

I just had bruiser walk by at 37 yds. No shot outside of 25, it's to thick. I grunted and then a doe bleat but he wasn't interested. It's been awhile since I posted. Just want you to know I'm out working hard for the team I seem to be having one of those close but not close enough kind of seasons so far. Good luck and congratulations to all you team 3 members who have scored. It's starting to rain right now but it's supposed to turn to snow if it rains much harder than this I'm going to have to bag the morning and come out again this afternoon once it turns over I need to kill a buck to get rid of this mustache. Give them hell boys

Ended up doing an all day sit. I got wet in the morning after I saw that buck but I stuck it out through the rain. The temp dropped and it snowed a little bit and got down to the low 30s F. A little wet and 30ish all day while the high pressure made the wind blow is not a great combo. Saw two does around 10:30 am but that was it for the day. I was hoping that buck would come back..... Nope.
