Update on the "blue" island previous post.
If you remembered
@Kurt had recommended I parachute in, but ultimately I felt like that was unsporting so I walked in moving towards a tree I had identified and setup on my last visit (I am running bolts here - they are legal) -
red X. With the SW wind, I was hoping I could get in and not disturb the deer in the potential bedding spots. I am walking in around 2pm kind of hugging the shoreline - yellow arrow.
When I get to the head of the yellow arrow I see a doe 30yrds to my east right at the edge of the cattails. I freeze. Then emerges a dandy buck. I'm not in the business of scoring deer in the field but this guy was solid. Anyhow, these deer have heard me but aren't bolting. The buck turns and looks like he heads back into the cattails - to which I figure that is the last I'll see of him. The doe is staring at me. Finally after what seems like an eternity, she puts her head down and I moved behind a big oak. From there I peer out. After a few min she moves out of sight - I can't tell what direction (it is thick there). I decide to pull out, and start moving back slowly...
There pops out the doe, now fully busting me she shoots SW. The big buck follows. I put my head down thinking about the baloney that put me in an hour later than I wanted to be. When I look back up, there is a nice 6 pointer that I hadn't seen before standing where the doe had been. Still no reasonable shots. After a short pause, he follows the path of the doe. Sure enough, a few seconds after that a 4th and final smaller buck follows. Had I been in earlier the lot of them would have passed right by my target tree on their way N...
So, I blew it - but confirmed there are some bucks in the area, but I blew it.
The orange army comes through the area Monday, and I leave for rifle camp up north Sunday morning so at best I will get another crack at this spot later in Nov if at all.
I guess I should have parachuted in.
