TEAM 3 - BARK BUSTERS

So I just got hooked up with a new spot not far from my house. A fella from my church invited me to hunt his farm that nobody else is hunting. It's approximately 40 acres of corn surrounded by a line of mature trees. Beyond the trees are some more corn fields and small patches of woods.

I got to scout it today. I noticed some deer tracks around the honey locust trees. The hedge around the field is pretty thick. I think my best bet will be to set up by the drainage ditches that connect the fields.

Any tips for hunting over standing corn? I've never done this before.

While the corn is still up they feel very confident moving along the field edges between the corn and woods rows. My suggestion is finding a pinch where the corn and woods are pretty close and overlooking that.

Had that nice 8 and that tall spiker about 50 yards out last night. Similar wind situation I’m hoping the do the same they did last evening. I moved around to where the came back into the woods after hitting a dropping apple tree.

Evening hunt. Got busted going up the tree at about 230 pm. She told the whole woods about me lol. Then, One doe, out of my range, 2 fawns in range. Nope didn't go there. Too small. Set up on a NE wind, deer emerge east to west. They didn't see me at all. Doe winded me 75 yards to my rear when she caught my down wind scent. They all took off. Next up was a one horn spike feeding to me. Thought it was a doe at first. He walked also. Red oaks with acorns around me but nothing falling yet. Great day in the woods.

@Hunter260 didnt you have a thread showing you bought some steel threaded rod or something at a hardware store to add weight to your arrows or am I mistaken?

Oh yeah buddy. It works like a charm. For purely scientific purposes I built some 1100 grain arrows and shot them from a youth bow set at 30 lb.
Can you send me a link to what you used or what it’s called? Thanks! Or to the thread.

I’m going on 3 weeks waiting on these new arrows so I’ve decided to try and just go heavier with my 300 spine arrows instead. I shot them with a 250 tip vs vs my regular 200 and they were close, I need to shoot them again to figure it out. I’m thinking 225 may be perfect, but that means I’ll need to either by a 225 broadhead (unlikely) or add 25 grains to the insert (more likely).

So what I did was took an arrow to ace hardware and just bought the threaded rod that fit in there almost perfect. Use hot melt to put it in, and push it in with the insert.

Ok so it was threaded rod. Cool thanks!

I’m dealing with non hot melt inserts so i can’t remove them easily without damaging stuff. I may just go to the archery shop and buy some of the weights that are keyed to screw in the back once I know what weight i need. I was also thinking that because I have the longer brass 100 gr inserts I could maybe get the weight I need and screw it down past what I need for my broad head thread engagement.

Deodorant? I've been using the Mitchum 48 hour scent free gel.
WARNING: Be careful with this brand. I just got some off amazon this week, and even though the labeling says unscented, it is definitely scented! There are several reviews stating the same. Not sure if this was a mishap with labeling or some other process.

In fact, I will probably loose a hunt today because my first try with the product was last night, and I can still smell it as I sit here writing this. As soon as I smelled it, I wiped it off and went back to my regular brand. I'm going to try again here in an hour or two to get rid of this smell, and if that doesn't work I have to skip my afternoon hunt.

Just a friendly warning.

Don’t skip a hunt from deodorant! Just play the wind. I haven’t used a scent control product in several years.

I'll stay away for sure! LOL

You know I've been using it and I've had deer right under me the two times I've been out and they haven't winded me. I was wondering though because this last 2 pack I bought, it smelled a little different than the other ones I've used the last couple of years. My issue is its the only "Scent Free" pit I can find locally otherwise I have to drive to Wally World or something 30 minutes away.
