Team 5 - 2021

I just took a very stupid long shot at one of my target bucks. It was a clean mess. He was even bigger than I thought. Immediately following him and the hotdoe was a smaller buck who I also shot at and missed. I’m starting to doubt my commitment to the recurve.

Don’t call it the struggle stick for nothin….. keep at it. I keep thinking I’m interested in trad & then these stories are good reminders that bow hunting is already tough…….

I was just thinking the same thing haha.

Now that I’m over the adrenaline dump I’m feeling a lot better. I’ve seen alot of deer already this year and have been inside of 20 yards on two dominant bucks in the past week. I’m gonna connect sooner or later. And gun season opens in a week; it’ll be a much easier game at that point.

I’ve been hard at it , plenty of projects & side work that’s been keeping me out of the woods. I shot 2 does early & my kids shot ML deer each. But since then I’ve just been hunting Sunday mornings before church. We’ll today was the day. I had an 7am encounter with big 150s ten point. Not 15-20 minutes later I got this guy on a 35yd trail, he finally worked in quickly to 32yds I was shooting through a hole & had a deflection. It turned out to be a terrible shot & I backed out & went to church. (Was close to the property line & neighbor is PETA) came back at 330 & he was dead 55yds from my stand in his first bed.

Well done!!!

My mom and dad are coming up to spend thanksgiving with us. I plan on taking the Ole man with me deer hunting. He’s never killed a deer. He always hog hunted when I was younger. He’s adamant on taking his AR. I heard a lots of guys on the AL Hunting forum say it’ll kill just fine but I’m curious what youns think.

I killed a buck a couple years ago with mine and a few days later my buddy killed a buck with it out of the same tree stand. It’ll do! Just do your part and keep distance in mind.

Oh and it’s iron sights no scope. Most of the spots I hunt are bow spots anyway so he wouldn’t have an opportunity at anything close to 50 yards. I just don’t want to make a fuss over it and fight with my Ole man over something when we could be enjoying the woods together. He’s hit a point where he doesn’t want to kill anything anymore anyway so I think he’s just going to spend some time with me. He hasn’t hunted but once last year with me and that was the first time in like 6 years.

Ok couple of you guys pmed about my buck. I second guessed myself for a day or 2 on where to setup based on options wind , etc. I went to a farm that’s 16 acres only 7 are wooded (I’d zoom out for y’all but too much info on that map) so my setup is the yellow icon & the yellow trail leading in…… 8134B17A-A3F6-4D4B-8832-1EE7B61403F3.jpeg
Wind was northwest & all the doe movement was east to west pretty much in front of me & the bucks were cruising north to south. I was 25 yds from that intersection. This was my second sit on this farm but 1st here. I could get busted from a buck cruising behind me but it all worked out. So 2 does came through at about 650 & passed at 35 yds & angled away to me left (west) a stud 10pt low 150s wide & tall came from the north & was 55 yds at the closest. I grunted a few times & he stopped & looked but continued to intercept the does. I tried a Hail Mary & snort wheezed , he stopped & raked a tree & went on his way ( he knew he didn’t have anything to prove). So about 15 mins later a doe about 7-8 does come from the north about 40 yds to my left, they pick different trails & a small yearling doe is 20 yds to my left. I’m only 15ft up in a split tree about the size of a basketball, the left trunk I’m tethered to is about 8” trying to to move to much with that many eyes & ears nearby. I catch movement at my 11oclock, realize it’s a mature buck & clip on. The doe next to me starts to get nervous & move towards the buck . I get setup for the shot he’s broadside at 32yds at the shot he wheels quartering away& my heart sinks as I watch my arrow deflect slightly right before impact. The arrow passed through his left rear hindquarter & out mid body on the opposite side. He bounded off 30yds & stood there for 10 minutes . I watched him through binos, willing him to go down. He did not, he disappeared behind 2 large oaks at 50yds right on the property line. I was frustrated at the poor hit & didn’t want to make it worse by pushing him. I waited almost 2 hrs & climbed down & snuck out. I went to church & came back at 3 o’clock, he was dead in his first bed behind those big oaks. I couldn’t have been happier with the ending. He was probably dead before 8am I just didn’t know it ……. He’s in a large cooler on the back porch & skull is going to taxidermist for a quick euro tomorrow……. It can all change in 30 seconds!!!!!8134B17A-A3F6-4D4B-8832-1EE7B61403F3.jpeg4C65E5F6-CC85-478A-BCE5-4CE6100563DC.jpeg19FF499B-B3BA-4F6B-B0BA-AEB8E628AF6A.jpegB97E2942-5F26-42EA-ADC6-C6451D266851.jpeg

Well done, my man! Big congrats!

Back after it. Cold front just came through and switched the wind from south to NW. I've already had eyes on 5 deer (all antlerless). Hopefully the movement continues!
