Team 5 - 2021

I was “up north” as they say here in WI for opening gun last weekend. Got skunked.

Started to really snow in the afternoon on Sunday, with some major wind gusts. So I decided to sit in some evergreens on a bucket to close out the weekend. Was in there 30 mins when so got surprised from behind by a couple of does. Came in at my 5 o’clock about 10 yards away. All of my cover was for the other direction (where I had seen deer enter the day prior), so I was basically screwed. Just caught them out the corner of my eye, I turned my head and the lead doe was sniffing the ground as she had caught my scent from where I had walked in. The action of swinging my gun over and turning my body would’ve spooked them for sure, so I just froze. She sniffed for a second and then got this, “oh boy, something bad is in here” look on her face. Started looking around and then noticed my outline. I’ve read somewhere how deer notice human eyes, so I closed my eyelids to just a crack. My little hair brain figured this would make the situation feel safe for the deer, hahaha. Well, then she does an even harder stare down, blows and rips out of there. Of course this all happened in like 5-7 seconds, but was slow-mo for me.

What I really wanted to do was go all Pacino from Scarface and just start spraying bullets from my Henry, but I controlled myself, LOL!

Good luck out there this weekend fellas. Hope to get out on Sunday afternoon after church.

Today is the last day of hunting before the gun season starts. It’s 25 degrees and the wind is howling from 20-40mph!

this picture is at about 345pm. I was sitting about 50 yards away debating whether or not to sit the tree this camera is on at 230. I opted for a different spot. I sat on bike for almost 30 minutes waffling because I had seen this deer on camera in both spots.

I chose wrong. Wind was blowing 20-30gusts, upper 20’s temp. This picture is standing over a scrape 10 yards from the tree I didn’t choose.

he was killed a week later by someone else.

go get em!

He’s in the books around 155”. Good for the kid who stuck him!

this was about 4-5 seasons ago. Funny part is I was hunting this area chasing a giant I had seen for two seasons. Found his carcass in a creek bottom scouting to hang a set. Next day the deer above started showing up on camera. The deer I was hunting before was 170 gross score…

Hey team…I think you should kill deers. Especially ones that get us points.
We’s tryin. I don’t know how it is for anyone else, but where I live there’s about 12 deer per square mile, and almost all the hunting available is big woods. Finding the deer is an Everyday struggle. Doe permits are by lottery only and about 25% of applicants win a doe tag. I’m working hard at it.

I’d like to shoot a bigger buck and upgrade! But man, the deer know what’s up now and I can’t seem to find them! I have come across some does, but not while in the saddle, which wouldn’t do us any good.

I sat the final hours of the bow only season in bitter cold and wind. I got about 20 feet up into a big ol sugar maple in a funnel between some over grown fields and oak trees, cross wind from a big bedding area. Alas, no daylight movement.
Tomorrow is a mandatory day off and then we begin the gun season. I’m considering using the smoke pole during shotgun season!

Had a doe or fawn at 35 yards right before dark. Walked directly under feed tree, and didn’t move for the entire time I packed and got down. She had to eat 2lbs of acorns in time it took me to slip out. Back in this am. Wet dripping from rain and acorns falling.

I never regret passing deer that weren’t up to the goals I set. That’s not to say every once in a while I don’t just let it rip anyway……
I’ve got a whole Month of gun season ahead of me. After seeing a number of huge bucks during bow season I wasn’t inclined to take the smallest buck I’d seen all year.

It's shotgun season in MA I went to a new spot Monday saw some scrapes and that's it besides other hunters. Not going to get out until Friday. I always use my smoke pole during shotgun season unless I go to a town that doesn't allow shooting, then I use my bow.
