Team 5 Thread

Did you score him? Hell of a buck by the way! My rutcation could suck every yr if I came home and shot one like that!

I had this one at 15 yds this morning. He was on my weak side in some thick privet. I got on him, but I couldn’t find a hole to squeeze an arrow through.

No score yet, this is my 1st opening day buck in like 26 years. Pretty crazy. I not use to shoot deer that I need to measure..haha

I did get a weight though, this deer had the smallest body, only 122lb!!! I think he was a young deer which makes me a little sad to know what he could have been. But there was no way I was passing up a rack like that.

The 10 pt I killed out there 4 years ago was 192 lbs dressed out.

It's just a little 14 acre piece that we have put a lot of work into making improvements to help make the habitat better for the deer and it's really starting to pay off!!

Switching gears for the morning, I prepped a tree this afternoon. I’ve never hunted this spot behind my house bc I didn’t want to burn it up, but I’ve seen bucks cruising this ditch leading to the river it runs north /south & the river is east /west. This spot is probably 70yds off the river & 150 yds from that oak/hickory flat I was hunting it’s about 50’ in elevation lower than the flat & the opposite hillside.

I hunted hard all weekend with a head and chest thing going on, paying for it now. Nothing to shoot at, watched a doe get chased all through fields for two days. One son will be visiting this weekend, probably put him in that tree and I'll bow hunt a small woods. We will see, never know.

I have a couple of things to get done this morning but these tasks have me near one of my hunting areas so the bow is riding along, and I may hunt this afternoon.

Rain predicted overnight then mostly clear tomorrow and temps dropping. This could be a good week. General gun season begins this weekend and runs for all eternity (just kidding until January 31st at dark). There will probably be a bunch of folks out this weekend so I may hit it hard Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

It's warm and windy here this afternoon. I decided to sit it out and wait for the cooler temps following the front and go at them hard Wednesday forward. I bought some more arrows today and lighted nocks, so I am going to put a few more arrows together to make up for breakage and loss.

I have been out of town on another business trip since Saturday. I just got back last night. My youngin, and I got drawn for a firearms hunt Thurs, Fri, and Sat. He will only hunt Friday, and Saturday. I was planning on doing more scouting, but I haven’t even stepped on the place this yr. I’m going to scout Thurs am and hope for the best. I’ve done a lot of turkey hunting down there, so my strategy is go to where I’ve killed, worked birds, then check out the thick areas near by for rub lines scrapes. Not really sure what else to do. Then boy is not going to want to hunt in the am so that gives me plenty of time to hunt/scout until I can find him one. Maybe I can get lucky and shoot one out of my saddle with his little 300bo. I know it blasphemy, but I think I’m leaving the bow at home.

No judgement here! Sounds like a solid plan…

I haven’t killed a whitetail with a rifle since I was 22 yrs old. It’s typically not my thing, but if it increases the chances on a short public land hunt I’ll be all about it.

Something about breaking the silence/ causing silence in the woods on a nice cold morning with a rifle thats satisfying. That and watching them go down and not stressing over a track job. Even when I know I had a good shot with an arrow the track job is stressful. I HATE losing critters.
