Team 6 Thread

Birthday hunt tomorrow morning. Think I’m gonna try my luck and go back to the spot I killed in last time. Worst case I get to scout some more and spend time outside. Check that, worst case I’m backpack carrying one out because my ****ing cart broke :tearsofjoy:

I try every year and never kill one on my birthday. Maybe it finally changes this year.
Happy Birthday @hokiehunter373 !!!! I hope you pierce a lunker!!

Got to height. Put full weight on my stick and down the tree it went. Luckily I was tethered and lineman’s to the tree. Messed my finger up a little but otherwise fine. Got my rappel gear out and down I went. Sitting on the ground now enjoying the sunrise. Happy birthday to me lol good grief. That’s a first. It was a slightly funky tree and I’m guessing the angle the stick was on didn’t let the bottom teeth bite anything. When I applied my weight, those teeth tried to do their thing, but couldn’t. Down she went. I easily could have not done my LB and lazily tried to pass my tether over the limb I was at. Stay safe friends. Don’t be lazy.

Glad you were hooked up.

Happy Birthday @hokiehunter373! Nothing like a new experience as a birthday gift for yourself. :tearsofjoy: Glad you're okay. It's happened to me a few times and luckily I've never been hurt and was able to deal with it and continue on each time.

Birthday gift of needing new drawers lol. I’ve had stuff shift on me or just minor things like that but never a full blown stick sliding to the bottom of the tree. Real thankful I climb how I should.

I got skunked though. Still enjoyed some gorgeous views and wildlife just not any deer. Hopefully have 1 or 2 deer hunts in me before I’m done this year. Then some squirrels with my pups and kids before we start thinking about fish

Do you know how many times I say, "Oh, just this once I'll be fine." Something tells me no, take the extra time and do it right, each time, tedious as it seems sometimes........ so glad you did it the right way. That would have been a bad birthday gift for sure and perhaps your last.

NY has started to track Elevated Hunting Related Incidents over the past five I think years now, maybe a little longer.... time just seems to fly anymore. Anyway, falls and deaths from elevated hunting are now more frequent than shooting incidents. At least in NY. Stay tethered in at all times folks!!

If the fall wouldn’t have killed me my wife would have. I’m sure of that.

Thought that seeing deer with tonight's setup would be a sure thing, I can watch around 150 acres of various hay and grain fields from this creek crossing. Saw a decent amount of tracks in the creek bed as I went in but 0 deer in any of the three fields tonight. 2 years ago in this spot at this time of year with a similar front pushing through I saw a total of 15 deer, starting to get very concerned about the local population numbers. Hung my trail camera up after I climbed down, should have some answers by Turkey season. Season runs through the 15th here, I may be able to squeeze in another hunt next weekend but I don't have the foggiest where to hunt at this point

What is doe harvest like around you? No ammo wasted, or no ammo saved (aka brown is down)? How about fawn recruitment this year? Overall buck harvest and average age class?
Could have something to do with it either way, given other factors and pressures on the herd.
Speaking of herds, sometimes they just be that way, “kinda off” what they would normally do, or at least what you e observed their patterns to be. Every pattern or cycle has its moments of “self” within the larger sequence, black sheep instances and conditions if you will.
I’m kinda just musing now. I dunno if I had a real point, but this is what I was thinking as I read your post. I’m fascinated by herd dynamics and localized ecology. Seems I rode my nerd train right by your station.

There was a big push for QDMA practices to be practiced in our county a few years ago, seemed to fizzle out when people realized they had to eat tag soup while pouring money in to food plots and habitat improvement to really make progress. Most people are looking for 120" 8's but pop 110" deer as soon as they see them. Does get thinned out pretty hard, MDC is pushing to reduce herd density state wide with increased season length and special for seasons. The herd dynamic seemed to be heavy on does the last decade or so, limited chasing during peak rut and extended rut activity in December and even January. No it just seems like the population has bottomed out, fewer deer seem while hunting and fewer seen driving to and from. Hoping to gain some insights from a long soak on the trail camera. May put the saddle and bow in my pack next weekend and scout/squirrel hunt as much of the farm as I can.
