Team 6

I am going to have a lot weighing on a trip this year with a buddy. I have pulled my game cameras this past week and I have one small 8 point in two plots over the last 30 days. Hopefully something shows up or I get lucky on my trip. We are doing a boat in trip hoping to get to some unpressured public land.

Found out today I got more urban access that I can start this weekend. After a weekend of storms followed by my son’s birthday I’m excited to get to be out there this weekend. I get a few weeks on a small parcel and I feel really lucky to have a place to go and excited to get in a tree and enjoy it.

We’re out here. No buck tag but this one wouldn’t get away from my stand for 15 minutes or so.

Congratulations :)
Thanks! Exciting morning for me! Double lung, pass through, only went about 15 yards. She was staying behind some brush and not giving me a shot for about 10-15 minutes. Finally took a few steps and gave me an opportunity at 17 yards. It looked and sounded like a great shot but when she took two big jumps and then just stood there I was nervous for a few seconds; then she went down. I’m thankful to have gotten it done and it’s been a really good feeling to have all the practice I’ve put in climbing and getting used to the new setup and shooting from different positions in it come together and that I could make and a good shot when it counted.

Very nice. Is this the first deer kill for our team? I’ve been trying to keep a watch on how many this team kills over the duration of this contest. I’ll be punching some tags soon I hope. God Bless

Not sure if it is our first, might be. I’ve got more tags so hopefully I’ll be able to get lucky again and build on the early season success. Right now just glad I didn’t get blanked and make you all wonder how you got stuck with the rookie holding the team back!

It is all in good fun anyway, I doubt anyone would be upset if someone on our team has a slow season… but I sure hope we whoop all those other teams and we each tag out and put some big ol bucks in the freezer. Just saying.

I got a doe this morning but was still hunting,so no points for the contest. I am a happy camper to get one for the freezer though. I have three more tags,so hopefully one or two of those will be from the saddle. I almost connected yesterday afternoon when I was in a tree, but only the tiny doe and a button buck came close enough, the other deer were 35 or more yards off.

This year is starting out odd. All of the persimmons I checked this weekend were still holding green fruit. Normally they are starting to drop pretty good by Oct 1st. I checked a couple dozen white oaks and only found a couple of green acorns under them. Nutall's are still holding too, the few that have acorns. Looks like we are going to have a big crop of overcups and the skwerls are cutting green acorns but they are not ready to be dropping yet either. The honey locust that had beans this year shed them during the hot dry weather through the month of September. Everything mast wise is late down there this year by a couple of weeks at least. Planning to go back to private this coming weekend. If the forecast holds it could be a good weekend.

One more day of work and then I’ll be back in the saddle for a four day weekend. Going to be in the doe only area again, saving my buck tag for a bit later, I’ve got some early November time off so I’m opting to try to keep filling the freezer for now for. Getting a buck would be a bonus for me, I’m still really happy to have one deer in the freezer and grateful for the opportunity to try for more.

Took a doe last night. Had to kick off the killing season. Bad picture from the tree, soon after a bear came in and shot that too. Forgot to take a better pic of doe as I was not thinking about the contest but if what I should do about the bear. Never found it.

How many points for a bear?

Muzzleloader opens tomorrow for me I’m gonna have to go to an area where I can climb to get points just checked out a brand new spot yesterday had two does watching me at my truck when I first got there but found a scrape and some old rubs still have to scout it a bit more but looks like it will be pretty good for pre rut wish I had a trail camera with me when I was out there

Have to take the kids to school/daycare tomorrow so I can’t get out as early as a lot of folks would say you have to but I figure I’ll give it a go anyway and see if something happens to be moving. If not I’ll just enjoy some time outdoors in the saddle. Have the day off and I haven’t put any in the freezer from my recliner so it doesn’t hurt to try.
