Team 6

Appreciate you all, I’ll be trying to upgrade one of them to a buck, I know two does isn’t a huge boost for the team score, but I had to stick to my goals for my first year bowhunting and in a saddle which were very simple; improve my skills using a saddle and a bow in the field, put meat in the freezer for my family, and if I could continue to have success to donate to HUSH to help others. We’ll see how the next 3 months play out but I couldn’t ask for a better first 8 days in the trees and a saddle. Thanks for taking in the rookie on your team and being so helpful!
Every kill with a bow is special. It isn't easy and two does are great. I hope to be able to enter two deer for the contest.

This weekend I will be headed out to hunt bear at my in laws farm. My father in law has 6 bear almost every day in his plot and said I could take a crack at them. A Sal with 2 cubs and three different boars, one easily over 300lbs. It’s opener muzzleloader/bow bear for us in PA. My plan is to sneak into the plot in the morning and hunt from the ground for first light incase they are in there and if not, go up in the saddle with the longbow and my long gun, a 54 cal flintlock made by Ron Luckenbill. It will be a 25 yard shot to the edge of the plot but the bear have been walking between the plot and woods which would make it a 15 yard shot for the bow. Getting both the gun and the bow situated in tree should be fun but I am sure looking forward to it. He does have a few big bucks in there but I haven't discussed shooting a deer and not sure if I want to cross that line beings it’s his food plot and he only rifle hunts.

6 day week at work and too many hours but I’m headed out to the saddle tomorrow morning for a bit and see if this cold front doesn’t have one wander by me. Got both back from the locker already so my freezer is starting to look like something to be proud of!

Sat all day today with the muzzleloader for bear. Snuck in on a decent 8 point, was able to get about 40 yards from him. If I had the bow I might have made a little more of an effort. Spent the first hour on the ground then worked my way into the tree which was interesting with a gun that is about 5ft long. Didn’t really know how to keep it in the tree with me so I tied my hoodie sleeves and zipped it to the tree and used the hood as the base and strapped the barrel to my pack so it could sit in arms reach against the tree. Need to figure out something better for next time. Wind was rough, at one point I was hugging the tree as I packed my stuff to get down and then it slowed down so I stayed but it def scared me. Listened to three trees come down in about 30 min. I don’t know if I was safer in the tree or on the ground at some points. Had two times where it gusted up and got worried and just steady the rest of the day until about an hour before dark and it went silent. Hoped for the best and saw another buck and a bunch of doe but no bear. Enjoyable day but that wind whooped me.

Gonna need yall to carry me this weekend. Work decided I need to go to Seattle for a conference that starts Saturday and I fly back on Wed. After this weekend I will be hunting though. 3 or 4 day weekends the next 6 weeks to get even. The wife has told me she expects me to put at least 4 more in the freezer and would prefer 5.

Going to start trying to upgrade one of my does to a buck this weekend. Think I also am going to have to work but I am hoping to get out Saturday evening and put in some Sunday time. Lucky for me I’m new enough to this (saddle and bow hunting) that I’m just excited to go out and don’t get too stressed about being out there at exactly the right time of day or year. Figure if no one else is out there I can practice rattling and things without disturbing someone else’s hunt.
