Team 7 Thread

I still have a doe tag left and can hunt till the end of January. Not gonna lie it’s hard to find the motivation when it’s below zero wind chills. Saturday is looking decent so maybe I’ll give it a whirl.

I passed up a 8" spike with the bow Sunday night. It was temping because I've never shot a buck during our winter bow season. We finally had some cold weather roll in this week. I've got a few bedding areas with great buck sign I found while scouting after I tagged out so I'm going to hit them up and hopefully I can put something bigger than a spike on the ground.

Go get'em boys. Wish I was still in the game. We have had pretty good hunting weather the last couple of weeks but unfortunately my season closed last month.

Got this six pointer this afternoon during the NJ winter bow season. A front was coming through with snow to be starting later tonight. He was following 6 does. A front coming always seems to them moving. Sorry guys we don’t get any more points since I already got a doe and an 8. But this guy puts me one up on @redsquirrel for the family contest.

I still got time!
Congrats!

I am hoping to get out tomorrow afternoon to look for a doe. I started a COVID isolation on Thursday so thinking I might as well be outside in the fresh air.

I failed ya all this afternoon. Got out this afternoon for a COVID isolation sit. Temps in the low 20’s and a stiff wind out of the south so I headed to a small section of pines figuring they will be bedding in there to get out of the wind.

I spotted a doe 20 yards from the road as I dove in. Ducked behind a tree to get an arrow knocked and when I looked up, she was gone. She didn’t smell me or blow as she exited so I figured I’d slip in and try the bump and dump. Found 5 fresh beds not far away so she had roommates. I pushed in another 50 yards and got up in one of the small pines about 10 feet. There was 2 large recently used beds within 5 yards of the tree I was tucked into.

Pretty quiet all afternoon other than crows and small squirrels. About 30 minutes before end of shooting, I need to adjust the boys a little. I was using the branches of the pine tree as a ring of steps instead of hanging my platform so was a little out of the ordinary for me. Unbeknownst to me, there was a big doe at my 7:00 just 8 yards away. Never heard her coming in. She caught the movement and took off past me into the pines. I am kicking myself. Guessing she was coming back to the bed I was hanging over.

We hunt and we learn. Either way, it was great getting out. Just sorry I didn’t seal the deal for 5 points.

I got out for a short sit this afternoon but the action was hot. Saw a total of about 15 deer, 4 of which were bucks. I was hunting on the ground in a stand of pines and spotted legs coming my way. Went to full draw and the first one was a really nice 8. He stood there broadside at 25 taunting me before he moved through the shooting lane. No buck tag so today was his lucky day. The next one through was a smaller 6 followed by a little 4. Then the doe parade started through. I couldn’t hold much longer so when the next doe hit the window, I let one fly. I had my distance off a little and she ducked at the sound of the shot so it sailed over her back for a clean miss. All of these deer ran up on me in a nearby CRP field 30 minutes earlier and proceeded down towards the nearby rivers. I was able to get in position up ahead to cut them off before they crossed onto private. Even though I didn’t execute the shot in the end, this was one of the most fun hunts I’ve ever had.

Next time at least connect your tether to the nearest tree so if you do score it will count in the contest :tearsofjoy: Fun hunt though. Thanks for sharing.

I did something today I have been trying to do for a few years. Missouri seasons runs 9/15 to 1/15. I have been trying to kill a deer every month of season. Killed deer in 4 months many times, but always missed Sept or Jan. One year somehow I missed November. Probably because I was looking for good antlers. Tonight I sealed the deal on a January doe. I am super pumped. I finally did it. Killed a deer every month of the season this year.

Way to go @onestringer! Congrats! Love it when we set goals and achieve them no matter how big or small they are. No points for the contest?
