Team 7 Thread

We are practically neighbors. I am through Miller frequently going hunting

Nice, you must be hunting Stockton if you’re passing through Miller. I’ve been looking at some spots on the lake for the past few years. I duck hunt quite a bit and have found some out of the way places. My only gripe is MDC won’t allow you to use an antlerless tag up there.

In a tree right now. Got a doe last weekend.

Off to a good start. I’m a sucker for the stories of how it went down if you care to share. Seems like I can always take something away from each one.

Nice to hear everyone’s back story. My name is Chuck and I live in SE Wisconsin. I hunt pretty much all public land as well. I got out for a morning sit yesterday morning for Wisconsin’s opener. I snuck in early and quiet to a suspected doe bedding area on the transition from a marsh to a poplar / hardwood ridge. Nothing blew out on the way in or during the setup so I felt good about catching a doe coming back from the acorns. Sat until 9:00 and didn’t see anything until I started the climb down when a doe took off out of a bed 25 yards away. We never knew each other were there until I started my less stealthy descent. She wasn’t huge but she looked tasty:). The parking lots were very busy on the property I was on although I didn’t have any company where I ended up setting up. Too hot here today so taking care of some honey do’s instead of hitting the woods.

I bought a camper on a permanent site in Juneau county this spring so I intend to get some hunting in there this fall starting next weekend. Found some promising spots during a couple early summer scouting trips. There is over 150k Acres of public land to explore near the campground including water access spots so I am excited for that new adventure.

have a blast in the tree and be safe out there!

I've got a half hour between jobs, so I'll take some time to introduce myself as well. My name is Mark and I live in SE Wisconsin. I hunt almost all public, which around here is mostly small tracts and hunted hard--driving many of the deer onto adjacent private land.

I don't get to hunt as much as I prefer due to working 70-75 hours per week (don't ask). Also, Sunday afternoons the family, kids and grand kids, come over and I barbecue. I love my family and won't give this up, even for hunting. I do take a week off work for the rut, and another week for gun season.

Gun season for me is a meat hunt combined with an up-North vacation with some friends. Lot's of fun, endless public land to hunt, but I've never shot a decent buck during rifle season. ...And I don't care.

What time will dinner be ready? I am brining a salmon today that will go on the smoker tomorrow.

Tell me about the brine. I got a smoker for my birthday.

I’m Chris Williams and I live in SW MO also. I’m originally from SC and still go back from time to time and hunt with my dad. I started bow hunting almost exclusively when I moved to MO because the minuscule amount of time the MDC has for rifle season.

I’m a respiratory therapist so needless to say my last 18 months has been chaotic and gut wrenching at the same time. Hunting and golf are my escape mechanisms and I would probably be nuts without them.

I also volunteer with a non profit that takes veterans on hunting and fishing trips. We host several hunting events but I’ve mostly been involved in the waterfowl hunts. We bring in veterans and their entire family for the events absolutely free of charge. Needless to say it’s extremely rewarding.

This is my first time in the contest and I’m excited to be a part.

I have good luck with 2 brines depending on the flavor you are after.

Option 1:
4 cups cool water
1 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup kosher salt
Zest from 1 orange

Mix all ingredients together. Place the salmon in large ziploc bag, add the brine. Seal up and let sit in the refrigerator for 8-12 hours. After the brining process is done, place the salmon on a wire rack in the refrigerator to allow the Pellicle to develop. I usually do this over night. This step is crucial so don’t skip it.

Glaze for during smoking:
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup orange juice

set the smoker at 165 degrees and smoke to an internal temp of 145 degrees. Brush with glaze every hour.

Option 2:
4 cups cool water
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup kosher salt

Mix all ingredients together. Place the salmon in large ziploc bag, add the brine. Seal up and let sit in the refrigerator for 8-12 hours. After the brining process is done, place the salmon on a wire rack in the refrigerator to allow the Pellicle to develop. I usually do this over night. This step is crucial so don’t skip it.

Spread 3 T of minced garlic over the salmon slabs. Sprinkle 1 T of dried dill over the salmon slabs. Slice a lemon and place the slices over the top of the salmon slabs. Set the smoker at 165 degrees and smoke to an internal temp of 145 degrees.

Yum!

That’s awesome what you are doing for the vets and God bless you man for going into the healthcare field. Can’t imagine what that has been like for the past 2 years.

Team 7 - I managed to sneak out after work to a nearby state forest parcel for the last two hours of hunting this evening. (My 3rd sit of the season, albeit a very short one.) Got back in the thick laurel as quietly as possible on a good wind and up in the tree with my Overwatch Outdoors Transformer saddle. (I love this saddle!)

In CT we can only hunt until legal sunset, so it's not dark when we have to call it a day, but under the forest canopy above the laurel, it's still pretty dim light for a shot at legal sunset unless the target deer is really close.

It's probably too early for it, but I gently rattled a soft sequence of sparring for about 5 seconds. I did that twice tonight within the last 20 minutes of legal hunting hours. Although I couldn't see them, I heard a couple of deer busting through the laurel to my proximity - they were probably about 50 - 60 yards out by the sound of it - I spent the next 15 minutes doing my best impression of a statue up in the tree - I didn't want to give them any indication I was there. They never closed the distance before the end of legal hunting hours, and never gave me a line of sight to them, but I don't think they were onto me because they didn't blow and I never heard them take flight. I came down as quietly as possible and exited in the opposite direction. I'll leave that spot alone for a while and try a setup in a different tree in the same general vicinity in another week or so.

Nights like this evening feel like I'm in a chess game with ninja deer!

Couldn’t hunt this morning but we had a 30ish degree temp drop from the high yesterday to this morning. Overnight tonight is supposed to be in the mid 40’s. Here’s hoping I can go out tomorrow morning.

Sorry team 7. Let you guys down last night. Missed a chip shot a on a doe that I had broadside at 18 yards. Actually did hit her right on the top of the back but only found a couple spots of blood this morning and no deer. I just rushed the shot. Rookie mistake. You would think I would know better after 44 seasons.

Not much backstory really. September for us is earn a buck so opening weekend I put bait out to get my doe ASAP so I can start buck hunting. I also hunt in a management program in our county park system where I have to shoot 2 does to shoot a buck so that usually becomes about getting my 2 does so I can buck hunt there as well. Now that I'm in the game I've made 2 buck sits in the past week, Friday and Saturday night. Didn't see anything but chiquitos that were trying to eat me alive. If all is well at home tonight I'm going to sneak out to a little spot I saw 2 bucks at last year over 2 or 3 sits. My wife is pregnant and we're expecting #2 in mid-March so I'm going to have to take what I can get this year (and likely forever more lol). I've been lucky to hunt as much as I do with one child!

Stuff like that happens to everyone, whether they talk about it or not. The good thing is it was on an early season doe, not a nice buck during the rut. If you're like me, it'll make you extra careful for the rest of the season!

I have no doubt you will put down a good one for team 7

First sit of the season and I didn’t see anything. Well nothing but teal. Ironically I hunted teal in the exact same spot a week ago and didn’t see any of them. The weather didn’t get as cool as predicted and it’s back into the 80’s and 90’s for the next 10 days. Maybe I can catch an evening hunt.

My name is Joe and I'm in NE PA. All public land here, primarily laurel and blueberry swamps bordered by old growth hardwoods and various age timber cuts! Just impatiently waiting for PA's opener on October second now. I'm absolutely ready to go, but unless something changes in the next week or so, you may not hear from me again as the mosquitoes may exsanguinate me on my first sit lol (they're brutal by me right now, and they're HUGE). Good luck everyone!

Same here! We have a 1.5 year old and a second one expected mid-March lol. I primarily get weekends, read Saturdays, but we'll see because the wife wants to hunt this year too...
