Team 7 Thread

I've been hunting my azz off the last week and have nothing to show for it. In my defense the weather has been more fit for fishing than hunting. 65 to 75 and sunny for the most part with very little wind.

I actually took the day Saturday to scout hard and move some cell cams to areas with better sign, rather than to hunt. Found some decent sign and a fresh scrape in an area covered with oaks, and some of them were raining acorns, so I left a cell cam there about 15 yards from the scrape.

Hunting hours end at legal sunset in CT, and so far the deer are showing up about 30 - 60 minutes after that - it’s clear that they’re feeling the hunting pressure. In the first week or two of the season I’d catch them on camera as early as 5pm on a lot of days.

I haven't been getting out much, busy in my last week of work, but two days to go now I am pretty well through handing off what I need to, and my give a dang is fading fast.

I'm a free man the rest of the season. Work when I want to work, hunt when I want to hunt. Wife is now my only boss. I have a decent runway to get my business off the ground so I am not pressing too hard until after the season. Little bit of a midlife sabbatical.

I whiffed on a doe Saturday morning. Sorry guys. 30 yard shot, release felt great, got it through the narrow window of branches I needed to, wham right over her back. Pretty sure she ducked it. Spent over an hour looking for my arrow and blood, nothing. Arrow had to have deflected. I was 99% sure I saw it go over, but I've had a couple shots where my eyes screwed with me. Didn't sound like a hit.

My cell cams have been dead for about a week and a half now. This weather just sucks but it is supposed to break Saturday. All the cams are over scrapes and I haven't had any bucks to speak of working them. I'm betting that changes this weekend.

I just started getting pics of a buck that I've been chasing since 2017, including three evening (legal time) pics... First daylight pics since 2019, and I was close that year. He's a 7 point now and going downhill and probably won't be around next year, whether I get a chance or not. So Saturday, I'll throw a afternoon sit out there, I won't be able to make the morning. I've passed on a 6 point and a doe so far. I usually don't pass on does, but I was in a "buck" spot, and legitimately 2.98 miles out, according to my onX track when I sneaked out.

In a tree waiting for Bambi’s great uncle on his fathers side to come by. He probably won’t. Went to a public spot for a quick hunt, there were 2 cars in the parking lot I had planned to hunt so I went to a different spot. Maybe I will get lucky.

Saw one big nanny this morning but didn’t have a shot. Slipped and tweaked my knee coming down on wet steps. I think I’ll be good to go by next week. The deer are still pounding the white oak acorns pretty good.

Saw a spike this morning and jumped a couple does 100 yards from my tree walking out. The rubs and scrapes in the woods are picking up. And I could smell bucks in the woods this morning. Action should be picking up in the next week. With this cold front tonight I'm going to try to get out in the am again tomorrow.

Rain passed through, FINALLY cooling down.

Set up over a fresh scrape on an old log road in a laurel thicket with a big rub and big pile of fresh dookie. Came across it 250 yards from my intended destination but decided to hunt it and hang a cell cam.

Been battling my right meniscus all season and tweaked it yesterday so closer to truck is fine by me.

We'll see, woods are wet and quarters are tight. Phone into pocket and high alert.

Got out this afternoon. Did a quick scouting loop before heading in for the sit and jumped a basket 6 by some apple trees that were dropping. Also found some fresh scrapes on a bean field edge a few hundred yards away. No other deer seen while on stand. Confidence was high that I would at least have some doe come into those apple trees but no such luck. I found a cell cam set up on the same apple trees so I’m not the only one watching that area.

Got some family commitments tomorrow so not sure I will be able to get out again until next weekend.

Cold front came through and it was 46 here this morning. Does were prancing around the roads on my drive but not a thing from the tree. Unless I push my luck after work tomorrow I’m probably out of the woods til Thursday. Have Friday off though.

Sorry guys, I cost us 5 points last evening. My first shot opportunity this year, I misjudged the distance and shot right under her.
