No Sunday hunting on public land in CT, so I did some scouting today. With all the wind on Saturday, there was a massive leaf drop and there were freshly fallen leaves covering everything. Because of that, it was easy to spot a couple of small fresh scrapes. They must have been made this morning.

I put out a couple preset loops for rope climbing not too far from those scrapes. I left cell cams near both new presets so I’ll see what’s coming through and what time of day or night.

I would move :)

They added Sunday bowhunting on private land and state WMAs about 10 years ago here. I wish it was everywhere but it was game changing for sure.

It’s one of those old “blue laws” from colonial times forbidding certain activities on the Sabbath that has never been repealed. (Other ones forbidded stores from being open on Sundays and forbidded serving/sale of alcohol on Sundays … but those have been repealed.)

For decades, Sportsmen lobbied to repeal the “no Sunday hunting” law in CT, but the anti hunters and animal lovers counter-lobbied to preserve it - not based on religious objections but because they oppose hunting.

CT Sportsmen finally borrowed a page from the anti-gunners handbook and pursued “incrementalism” as the strategy to peel back the arcane law - and it worked. A few years ago, the CT legislature passed a law allowing Sunday hunting during open season (a) for deer only; (b) by archery only; (c) on private land only.

It’s a start.

Passed up a 2.5 year old high 4 pointer last night. I have about 5 sits left on my first bow tag of the season but this next week is my favorite hunting week of the year. I just went through and created a spreadsheet. I have killed 5 out of my 13 mature bucks in the last week of October alone. I'm off today so I'll be back in a tree this afternoon.

It’s the weekend. It’s the last week of October. It’s time to kill deer. I am going to post a pic here. It’s a big step for me. I am Onestringer on just about every forum known to man. Why? Because I used to shoot trad. Black Widow recurves specifically. 5 years ago my elbow made me put down my recurve and get a Mathews no cam. Elbow surgery earlier this year and my elbow screams at me every time I pull my bow back. I bought a hickory creek. These things are flat out killing machines.

Went out for an evening sit in the saddle this afternoon near the cell cam I placed near some scrapes last Sunday. (There have been a couple of bucks on camera this week both at dawn and dusk.) The wind direction was right for a discrete approach, so I headed out to rope climb the tree I preset.

The fresh leaf layer on the ground was like walking on potato chips but I got to the tree as quietly as I could. Once setup at hunting height I had about 90 minutes until sunset. No action at all while on stand.

I rappelled down, packed up and left without bumping any deer. 90 minutes later, that cell cam sends me a pic of a nice 8 pointer at the scrape right where I was hunting. The next 3 weeks are my favorite part of the season here in CT - pre rut turning to peak rut.

I had my best sit of the season last night. I was set up around 4 and about 4:50 I hear what sounded like a grunt up the hill behind me. I turn around and see a big deer coming my way. I swung around in position and when I got a better look it was a big doe. But then I see another body behind her and I can see antlers. Probably a 2.5 year old 6 pointer. He was harassing her and they never got closer than 40 yards before they made their way off down the hill. About 10 minutes later I caught sight of another deer going that direction. Another half hour later from that general area I hear all hell breaking loose and turn and see fur going everywhere. I grab the bow and get in position and watch and wait. A doe went back up the hill, another one went down to the swamp, there was a third standing further away down the hill and in the middle stood a nice 8 pointer. He got to about 35 yards and was standing there checking them all out. As he started to make his way up the hill the doe from down the hill came up right by me at 10 yards. He was going behind a tree and depending which way he went he would either come at 25 and I could just get off a shot or go at 35 and be too far. I drew and he ended up going the far route. The doe caught me drawing and she scooted off while he hopped off another 10 yards and looked around for a while. Eventually he just made his way back up after the does. All in all a great hunt and just another 10 yards and I could have let an arrow fly!

Hate it when that happens! Keep after them. Your right on the action. It'll pay off soon.

Rained moved out and I moved in.

Temperature is dropping and I just had a small buck chase two does by me. It’s a nice morning to be sure in the woods.

Finally got out yesterday. Wind was real goofy out of the east with some north. Told myself if I was lucky enough to have something come in range I was letting that arrow fly. This guy came by at 3:15. He may be a 6, 7 or 8. Have to measure the brows I’m guessing 7. My hand is covering the longer of the two brows. Double lunged him at 25 yards. He trotted off about 30 yards walked another 25 and tipped over. Never knew what hit him. Feels good to get one on the ground.
