I happened to be passing by one of my cameras on the drag out and I actually have my saddle on in this pic.
I thought it was a small doe when I shot, but as I approached the deer, I soon realized it was a button buck.. I pass on small bucks in my area and I did so on a small 8 an hour before this guy came through…. Oh the irony. :coldsweat:

I saw this picture on the gram and kept checking this thread for the post and then wondered if it was you in the picture afterall. I hate it when I mistake a button for a doe, but it certainly happens

The first deer I ever shot was a button buck that I also thought was a small doe.. this marks the second time it’s ever happened. Hopefully the last! Haha.

Sorry guys, I’ve been MIA for a couple of weeks. Dealing with a family tragedy and that has been taking priority. Maybe posting here will help with my healing since I consider many in this community like family. Without sharing too many details, my younger sister was found dead in her apartment on the 12th due to homicide. A suspect was taken into custody on the 17th. To try to keep some normalcy in our lives, I shared a deer camp with my brother and father last weekend. It had been many years since the last time we all shared camp together. I’m very grateful to have that time with them. We got in some good hunts but didn’t connect. I did come across a dandy buck that had been shot the same morning but not found by the hunter. I had a pic on my trail camera of them searching about 75 yards away from where I found it but sadly, coyotes found it first and picked it clean. I believe I have pics of this deer on that trail camera. I decided with my limited time in the woods with family commitments that I’d put my tag on this deer and carry out the head. One of my sons good buddies is looking for a set of rattling antlers so I’m going to pass them along to him. I know I could have saved my tag and called in a warden for a salvage tag but I didn’t have time for that process, didn’t want such a great deer to completely go to waste and didn’t figure I’d be getting out again before the end of gun season. I still have 4 doe tags and a bow buck take so still hope to contribute to the team.

Anyway, here are a couple of pics of it. 18” spread 9pt.

@ofor I'm sorry to hear about your sister. I hope you and your family can find some closure somehow. I completely understand the need to spend time with your family as much as possible through the coming weeks and months, hopefully you get to spend some more time in the deer woods too.

Still grinding it out. Seeing plenty of does but no bucks. Hunting the rest of this weekend. Then next weekend our two week muzzleloader season comes in. I hunt the opening weekend but after that it is hit or miss getting out due to the holidays. Good luck to all you who are still hunting.

Got out in the woods this afternoon for some of God’s therapy and hopefully a doe since I burned my gun buck tag last weekend on a coyote ravaged big buck for rattling antlers. At 3:00, a group of guys did a drive on the piece I was sitting in. They didn’t jump anything so I packed up and headed back to the truck with plans to drop my pack and walk a piece of cattails, marsh grass and red brush. Ended up jumping a decent buck not more than 120 yards from the parking lot and without having a gun buck tag left in my pocket, I had had to watch him run off. Would have been a 40 yard chip shot with the 30-30. Was nice to see a good one even if I couldn’t pull the trigger on it.

Tomorrow is the celebration of life ceremony for my sister. Will be a long day…
