Team 7 Thread

I managed to get out a few times over the weekend and last night. There are lots of fresh tracks but I haven't seen any deer. They must be pretty nocturnal still after the orange army. Luckily it seems the vast majority of hunters have given up the chase at this point as there are only a few spots where I've seen truck/people tracks.

The snow is starting to get deep though. I'm plowing it with the front bumper of my Ram driving in and its getting to be tough walking with a pack on for this old guy. I'd put it at about 13-14 inches, not quite to the top of my boots yet but getting close. Its right at that point where its not worth the snowshoes but getting difficult to walk without them. I can't make out the small downed logs buried under the snow anymore so the footing is unsteady. Luckily its fallen in quite a few small doses, 2-4 inches at a time, so I can still get through the snow banks along the road with the truck. Once into the unplowed snow on the two tracks the truck has no problem driving, its just getting off and back on the plowed road I worry about. It won't be long and the snowmobile trial groomer will be running and that will cut off a lot of access for me.

It seems like my small private spot has more action in December than earlier. So far the only deer that have given me good shots are fawns and little four point forky's. Still at it though

Failed season
As I sit here this morning waiting for the squirrels to wake up, I'll tell ya about my season a bit. I didn't harvest any deer. I put the time in, hunted many hours, with only a couple weekends off with the family. But I didn't hunt HARD! I went the lazy route most mornings and hunted easy private behind my house. I passed on a momma doe with her fawn a few times, which I would not have done on public! I passed on a small 4 point twice (I prolly would have passed on public also). Most disappointing part is I went into this season telling myself I would hunt more public than private. I scouted early and had a few spots picked out. The public I'm hitting is really getting hammered this year by hunters, which gave me an excuse to slip out behind the house. I will say that I always end the season in a tree thanking God for the ability and opportunity he allows me to spend in him great creation, I seen so many beautiful sunrises and sunsets! I am hoping to journal this feeling for next season! I plan on setting more goals for next year and I hope everyone of you guys had a safe and enjoyable season. It was fun still hearing about this crews hunt, thanks!

Oh, by the way my season ended January 4, I'm not the best writer, prolly the most I've wrote in the last 30 years!

I will say my season was close to a no harvest season as well for a variety of reasons. Mostly a medical situation and limited time through the bulk of the archery season. When I was able to hunt, I felt guilty for going out because I had to lean on so many others for a lot of things I normally do. I also usually take vacation time during the hunting season and I felt guilty about doing that to my coworkers so my hunting time was reduced because of that. I also had my daughter’s wedding and then I chose to spend a week in Iowa with a buddy trying to kill pheasants!!!!

So, i am so thankful we now have a holiday hunt season that extends ML, bow or crossbow hunting opportunities for the last six days of the year and the first day of the new year. I finally connected with the ML on the day after Christmas and the last day of the year.

The fact that you recognize the aspects of the hunt that truly are important is a successful hunt no matter what. You also passed on deer so you have a maturity about your hunting that I highly respect.

Thanks for writing about your season. I think it read well!!!

Season is still open for another 30 days here. You guys can still hunt vicariously through me, lol. Packing up the truck, fixing to head out in the morning. Supposed to get cold after this front passes. Road kill body count has increased exponentially over the past week. It is prime time here. Have 2 spots where I feel pretty good about an opportunity for some points. We will see.

Rut is in full swing in sunny South aLAbama. Hunting a special draw hunt. This place has antler restrictions so there are plenty of deer to watch bucking and doeing, but still waiting on a legal one. It’s pretty cool to watch deer be deer instead of tweekey mcmethersons though.

Also not sure what this came from, but I went back to the truck and got my pistol.

I feel like that place is super hot with deer!!!

Well guys, no luck for me. My buddy killed a doe and shot another and a nice buck that we could not recover, dog and all. I just couldn’t figure the place out and find the X until the last day. Another 2-3 and I think I’d have gotten it done. It was a fun time though. I guess my season is pretty much done now. We are open until the 10th but my schedule is not conducive to anything more than maybe an afternoon hunt near the house between now and then. Trying real hard to not look at my fishing poles…
