Team 8 thread

yesterday was first time actually saddle hunting in a tree about 22' only real str8 spot on the tree. 2 wks ago I srt up to originally put a hang on but seamed like gravity wouldn't let me. so I kept my pre set there and bought some xop sticks. so basically set up my sticks with my srt set up and a linesman rope and put my onyx platform and 3 ROS set up. my issue is getting comfortable but all in all it is kind of neet just got to work out some bugs.I think this week I am going to change my bridge design to jrb latest build. The amsteel on mine is a pain on my cobra. I had one deer about 30 yards in thick cover never got to see it.

Who all is hunting this weekend? I'm planning to do long morning hangs only because it is supposed to be low to mid 90's in the afternoon.

I plan to go tomorrow and do some scouting, Card pulling, and may hunt depending on the sign I find. Mostly just prepping for permit hunt next weekend.

Saw 20 something driving in Saturday morning and 12-15 yesterday morning all way before daylight. Aint seen the first deer from a tree. Only hunted the mornings due to it being in the low 90s in the afternoons. Saturday had a coyote fire up about 60 yards from me about 30 minutes after shooting light. He carried on for 3-4 minutes and slipped off without me seeing him. Had a small group of hen turkeys came by at 9:30 almost exactly where the coyote had been. Next weekend is the ML/Straight wall hunt and there were a few camps that got setup this weekend.

HUGE doe, I’m on the board!
Congrats!! I am officially on the struggle bus. Finally had the right wind friday to hang on the best buck I have on cam so far. All but I think 2 of the pics I have gotten have been evening. Made a scouting loop in a different area Friday morning and relocated to where I park to go in on the buck about 12:30. As I am pulling up to the little parking area I can see a vehicle, great. When I pull up it is a cargo van pulling an enclosed trailer that is open. There are a half dozen big chainsaws and at least that many commercial weedeaters with saw blade heads scattered around along with at least one gas can for every motor. Looked like a full blown yard sale. There are 7 guys there eating lunch so I hop out and ask where they are going to be working. The one guy that speaks a little english points away from where I am going, whew. Then I point where I am headed and ask to verify that they are not going up into my area. He says no, they finished that area that morning. I about puke. Has anyone ever had the buck you were hunting screwed up because a 7 man thinning crew cut through the cutover where your buck was living. On the same morning you plan to hunt him no less?

Punted and went to scout an area I planned to hang Saturday that is 1.5 miles deep for opening day of ML. Hadnt been in there since winter vefore last. Get back there and the community scrape had been recently opened and there was a good bit of feed sign on the white oaks. Hung a cam on the scrape and got in a tree. Saw 3 big does and 2 little ones that evening. Ended up being 3 hours from tree to the house so it was nearly 10:30 when I got home and I was going to have to get up at 3 to be on time for saturday morning. After a 5.5 mile day in the mountains and a 4 hour hang, I said screw that lol. Skipped Saturday and went back in to the spot I scouted Friday morning for my Sunday morning hang. Was set and ready about 6:15. Stayed in the tree until 11:00 and called it. Had a group of 6 longbeards come in but that was it for the morning. It was, that I could recall, the deadest hunt I have ever made. There was nothing moving, not even tweety birds. Didnt hear the first bird until after 10 and only heard 4-5 total, no skwerl barking or moving at all and no deer. Heard two shots.

So for my public hunting, it looks like I am going to be doing scout and hangs until I get on something worth hunting. The two spots I ended up hanging this weekend will both get more sets though. Good sign in the right kind of spots. Just need to figure out the travel so I can hunt them off the spots because the spots are obvious on the maps.

Haha that is super frustrating about the logging crew right in your preferred spot. That is unbelievable. Good mentality trying to regroup and find another strategy

I shot a spike tonight, thinking it was a doe. I was on the ground. Went into some private woods edging a cornfield with 1.5 hours left until end of shooting time, in a hurry stupidly 2TCed a tree way too big for me, got all sweaty (it’s unseasonably 70°), finally got all set up, went to bring up my gun and realized my pull up fell off my saddle. Seriously it’s like amateur hour. Had to clinb down, didn’t have time to pick a new tree for fear of noise blowing the probable deer movement in the last prime hour. Too bad I couldn’t get us 7 more points, kinda amazed I still got one though.

I shot this guy on public tonight. 12 points for us! I misjudged him because he came out fast at last light but it is what it is. At least the angle makes him look bigger last night on the private piece, I had a giant sneak up behind me downwind. I swung around and when I saw him he was at 40yds staring into my soul. He didn’t want t to be on the wall anyways.

Congrats to you and @Marmuzz for knocking 'em down. I'm going to go up to my buddy's farm this weekend, well Thursday -Sunday. Fingers crossed I can find one to stand still in bow range.
