Team 9 2019 Discussion Thread

It is hard to get it to come up when I lift my feet. It seems to catch on the pine and hardwoods that I climb. Now that I have done the bolt mod, it was folding over and falling down. I have since zip tied the arms to prevent fold. I also start the platform pretty high and severely angled upward using a one step aider that then turns into a tether to keep the platform from falling. It still starts facing downward very soon after ascent. So I have to adjust the platform more often than I would like. The band also starts to twist pretty bad which doesnt make me feel confident in it. Should I be adjusting the ropeman on my tether as I climb or just move the tether up the tree?

I put a 1" shrink tube on one of mine that may help you. I bought it on Amazon. I only put it on the area of the strap that I felt would come in contact with the tree. It seams to stiffen out the cable.

How long does it take you to climb to about 20ft with the lwhc?

I’m dialed in on my climbing method. 5 WE stepps with knaider to get up the tree along with a lineman’s belt. Once I get to about 22-24 or so feet, pull out my 30 ft tether and hook in. Use a figure 8 with the auto stop tie along with a prussik.

This way I can just belay down when I done hunting for the day and collect my steps and platform along the way. I really like this method. Might buy another step to get me closer to 30ft.

I used a shrink tube on one of mine. It may help with your issue.

My WE Stepps just came in so I haven't really had a bunch of time with them, but I have been getting more comfortable with SRT. I plan on doing a few presets this weekend.

I went with the steps over SRT simply for the fact I didn’t want to mess with flinging bags into a tree. There is a learning curve to getting the stepps on and tight. Practice on a tree that isn’t in your front yard haha. Yesterday’s climb, I maybe had to retie one step as I could get it to cam over right. Each time out it gets easier and easier to tie and get set up. AH/WE put out a few tips and tricks videos on how to set up the stepps. Recommend watching them as i learned a few things I didn’t know until I watched (like pulling down on the ropes to help prevent them from popping back up).
Thanks man, that's good to know. I will definitely check them out. I agree with you on flinging bags into a tree! It can be a pain for sure. What I may do is use the WE for the first sit. If I like the spot, set it up for SRT the next go around. The season just needs to start so I can get to it!

Damn...never thought of doing that when wrapping up for the day. Great idea. I already have the gear for SRT so might as well put it to use.

In my setup I am using 50' of climbing rope, foot loop, madrock safeguard and petzl hand ascender with an assortment of carabiners. You also need throw bag to get the line in the tree. But as I was saying earlier, after you climb the 1st time, you can have it already set up for the next hunt. SRT is insanely easy if you have presets.

What's going on team?
Only 9 days left to wait, I’m trying to be patient. On my small private land plot my cameras are non stop on shootable bucks but very little doe action. I’ve got 9 shootable bucks that I will harvest if I get a shot. My wife agreed that we will leave the doe population alone. I will fill the doe tags on public. Here is a mature 6 and a decent 10 that are on my listB911EE2E-7754-4988-9B4D-C12393287AEC.jpeg48DDDE8C-0E01-43E0-B783-5F4FD9698DDB.jpeg

Things have been kind of quiet here. I'm assuming we all must have later season openers. I feel like I know a little about most of you but part of the magic of this contest, at least for me, is getting know our teammates a little better. How about we post a little blurb about ourselves to take some time until we can actually get hunting.

I'm 57 yrs old from northern Michigan, have been most all my life. I hunt primarily public land in multiple counties across the NW side on the lower peninsula. Opening day for me here is Michigan is Oct. 1st. I tow a camper around, park it on public land and hunt remote from home most of the season (the wife refers to it as her vacation) and typically hunt some evenings locally. I'm lucky enough to have been employed at a place for 30 yrs so I have ample vacation available for hunting. I typically take Fridays off throughout October giving me three day weekends and then I take the first 18 days of November off.

I've been deer hunting all my life (dad took along me before I was old enough to hunt) and I've been trying to slay deer of my own since 1974. I started the saddle hunting journey 5 years ago but had one year in there where I couldn't hunt due to some family issues so I've essentially been saddle hunting 4 years now.

My primary saddle is a Tethrd Mantis combined with a Tethrd Predator. My primary climbing method is single sticking on a modified Hawk Helium and I occasionally use my WE stepps when I know I'm going to an area with difficult (leaning) trees. I've been working the last couple of years on trying to get into self-filming my hunts but I have to admit, that part of my game needs serious work :).

I have to admit, at this point in my hunting life I am primarily an 8pt or better buck hunter. Also, in 45 years of hunting I've can only recall ever taking 2 does (70+ bucks though). That said, my freezer is getting empty so this year I did buy a left over doe permit so hopefully I can add a 5 point doe to the team score.

Looking forward to sharing stories with you guys throughout the season. Good Luck and be safe!

Joe W.

I’m 51 yrs young. I have resided in Arkansas for 21 years. Came here after getting out of the Army. Originally from Western Massachusetts.

I have been in the aviation field since I was 17 I am the Digital Flight Control Systems Specialist for Dassault Falconjet. We build private/corporate jets for the wealthy folks.

My Dad did not hunt, but my Mom’s best friends husband taught me everything he could including giving my an old recurve that I still own. I am blessed to hunt with my wife of 30 years.
I have 90 acres of private land that I hunt as well as several public WMAs that I frequent. My favorite is a 1000 acre of walk-in bow only that is 6 miles from my house. I hunt mostly for meat but I am selective about my deer. I hunt with a bow, rifle and muzzleloader. I hunt to keep the freezer full.

This will be my second season in a saddle. Last year I killed 3 from the saddle, 2 doe and a 10 point. I use a DIY SitDrag, based on G2’s. I climb with Primal Steps and a 5 step aider and use a plywood platform on my top Primal.

Happy to be part of this team and look forward to sharing the season with you fine folks. It should be a lot of fun. Hope all of us are successful and safe.

We work in similar fields. I'm a mechanical engineer working in new product development and supporting production for aircraft sensors for a major aerospace corporation for 30 years. Most of the stuff I work on ends up in Boeing aircraft but I have spent some time developing products for Gulfstreams and believe we have some proximity switch content in Dassaults (not my product line but supported by the same group here in Boyne City).

I just found a back band prussik cord for my Flex in the street in front of my house??? I didnt know it fell off while u loaded my truck last week.
Im from Arizona and moved to Arkansas sight unseen 5 years ago. I never hunted big game until the move because I never wanted to deal with lottery type hunting in Az. Instead, I bought quail dogs and chased Gambels for several years. I work marking timber on public land. Im in the woods 40+ hours a week but still havent got anywhere close to figuring it out. The big issue is it is hard to find a spot where there is no road or illegal OHV trail for about 1 mile away.
