Team Johnny 5 is alive!

congrats. I know most of my gun season hunts are just off the ground/no saddle. I do kind of wish we could still rack up some more points for additional does though. Maybe 1-2 points for each additional doe? either way, I'm feeling good about our lead. Good job yall.

If they did that the mods would have to put a lot
effort into configuring teams evenly. Hunting regulations and deer populations vary so much state to state. -I’ve never shot a doe- someday I’ll get lucky and draw an antlerless deer tag, but it hasn’t happened yet.

good point. that is very area dependent! not ever shooting a doe is so hard to imagine! Im at 7 does this year.

Wear your saddle and hang at ground level. Better than a seat, lighter , and more practice.

Finally got my cough under control enough that I welt like I could hit the woods this morning. I’ve had a couple buck on camera about an hour after dark and I’ve got access to another property I think they were bedding on. I haven’t been on the property since they clearcut it a couple years ago. Anyway long story short deer cut my entrance trail and spooked. Hung around long enough to give me a shot and I took it. He ran about 70 yards and stopped. Convinced myself he was dead on his feet and didn’t try to make a follow up shot. He dropped his head and I thought I would find him right there but it wasn’t so. Didn’t find any blood until I went home and got the dog. Found a drop at the hit site and a few tablespoons at the spot it stopped. Nothing else for about 350 yards. Maybe it’ll show back up on camera and be bedding closer to where I would rather kill him. This is him this morning about a quarter mile and 45 minutes form where/when I shot this morning.

There are few things harder to stomach than a shot with an unknown outcome. I’m sorry for ya! That cam lead to a long restless night, or even a whole week

What were your shooting?

oh man! this happened to me this year with a doe where the bullet went in and destroyed her lungs but dint exit, so zero blood trail. She was dead but was tough to find. My bullet just exploded inside. Never had that happen before. Do you have an idea where you hit him?

What were your shooting?
So you know it had to be something really dumb like an Air Force Texan 457ss

@philsanchez76
My mental snapshot was a quartering away double lung shot. Exit or not that spot he stopped and stood he would have been blowing blood if it was double lung. The dog took the same trail all three times. If it was a gut shot or liver I would have expected a wound bed within the first couple hundred yards.
I didn’t see where I hit a limb but when I got to where the deer was there was a lot of twiggy stuff between me and the deer. I haven’t checked zero since the shot and I will in the next day or so but I’ve shot it a good bit and it’s been on every time.
Unless I find him or he shows back up on camera it’ll be a mystery. I can see the sky above the area from my office window. Clear skies over there so far today but it’s overcast. I’ll ride through there in a bit. At this point if he’s dead the meat isn’t any good. It was 80 here yesterday and the mosquitoes were terrible.

Sorry man. That’s some rough stuff. All part of nature I suppose.

Oh man I don’t know anything about those air guns. Do you normally get an exit with those? Or is it like muzzleloaders where you only get that exit occasionally? Either way I hope you recover him even if the meat is past it’s prime. Keep us posted.

Regarding the muzzle loader, pass through depends on the gun, bullet and charge. Mine seems to have no problem with exit.

Just looked this thing up out of curiosity. Never heard of an air rifle larger than 177/22...How do you like it? I don't see any reason for me to get one, but I'd love to hear all about it! What kind of range are you getting?

Since I switched to a smokeless muzzleloader I’ve not had any more issues either.

It’s really just a toy. Think of it as a suppressed 45acp rifle. As far as range I’ve got it sighted in to be about 2” high at 50 yards and three inches low at 100. With a rangefinder you could kill deer a lot farther but the bullet is slower than sound so there is a point where the deer has time to react before the shot gets there. I’m 0 and 1 for deer success with it but there are plenty of people using them successfully. I get about five shots out of a fill. I’ll also be ordering a .25 for small game. Those will usually give you about 30 shots and I really think it’s going to replace my .22 for squirrel. They don’t give up anything to a rimfire out to 50 yards but because of the skirted pellet design they don’t travel so far. We own every bullet we send down range and there really aren’t many places where it’s responsible to shoot at a squirrel on top of a limb. Depending on the model they may be considered backyard friendly as well(not the 457 for sure).

It’s been great watching a whole bunch of late season bucks hit the scoreboard, so long as none
Of them come from team 8, things are looking good for us.

I on the other hand won’t be adding any more points this year. For two and half
Months I’ve been hunting: climbing in and out of trees - often in the dark. I’ve scaled
Cliffs, scrambled across glacial boulder fields, climbed mountains and walked several thousand miles in every kind of terrain imaginable. 2 days after the season ended I was taking out the trash and slipped on a wet board. My foot spun around backwards and upside down and then all of my weight came crashing down on it. This afternoon I’m meeting a surgeon to talk about how they are gonna put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Call it poetic irony.

O man I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you can get back to 100% in quick order!

Sorry to hear that. Wisdom to the medical team working on you.
