Tell me about Mammut Smart 2.0

Yes, that is the true Michoacán, it can also be rotated 180 degrees for another hitch, but you lose the spreading. Definitely want a hitch that grabs reliably each time. I find if using a Technora covered cord on a Technora covered rope another wrap needs to be added.

That image shows 4 wraps. Would you go 5?

Only if needed to bite each time it’s loaded, otherwise it is just more friction when tending.

Preliminary basement testing, Canyon Elite with TRC, with hitch above the device: a 5 wrap Mich *barely grabbed. To compare, I tied a Distel and felt far more confident with that. Frustratingly, both tended extremely well this time with the Smart.

This is a better grabber when the legs have to spread, I forgot that affects the Michoacán. The Knut H also tends easily, just need to figure how many wraps are needed.

Does anyone use the Mammut Smart 2.0 to ascend, hang, and rappel from with one sticking? I have been curious about trying it.

Currently I'm one sticking. I climb, hunt, and rappel on the same tether/rappel line (Canyon Elite). I'm ascending and hanging from a prusik, and then switching over to a Figure 8 with Klemheist on a lineman's loop to rappel. It's simple and works. I like the security of the friction hitches. I'm leery of mechanical devices and have mostly eyed the Safeguard craze as the latest spend-trend. But—I have to admit, I like the ability it would offer to bail out of the tree with the same rope, same device almost instantly. I've been trying to think of how to do this, sans Safeguard. Although the Smart 2.0 looks slightly less plug-and-play right out of the box (Mammut recommends using an HMS carabiner), it looks like it does everything Safeguard (without any mechanical parts) if you set it up with a friction hitch below on a lineman's loop.

Any input on using it to climb (especially one-sticking) and hang from?
That's exactly what I do but with the Black Diamond ATC Pilot instead of Mammut (similar but easier to use in my opinion) as replacement to Safeguard . I was using a Ropeman to climb and hang then switch to 8 w/ Klemheist to rappel but like this better. As you point out, it allows you to rappel at any time w/o any change of device. Also easier to sound proof and weighs almost nothing.

How are you doing that? Stealth strips?
I use black hockey tape (cheaper to replace as needed) but since most of the ATC Pilot is plastic it doesn't sound as bad anyway if it hits something metal.

I run a Smart 2.0 and definitely recommend putting the back up above the device. If you have it below i have issues rotating in my saddle in the direction of the back up as it pull the line tight limits my movement. With the back up above, similar to Brocky's pic above, your bridge can still slight through the biner effortlessly and not limit your shots.

Yesterday I 2TC’ed with the Smart and a Klemheist on my right LB loop. I worked very well. I loved the ability it gave me to instantly rappel, and I felt very secure during the ascent. I will have to try shooting bow with it in this set up.

I have been practicing one sticking and 2TC with the Smart and backup hitch on the right LB loop. It works well for both.

I will say for one sticking, I find the Smart tends to catch under my stick platform when I’m advancing my tether. There’s a little potential for noise there. Not a big deal with practice and maybe some vet wrap on the platform.

I know there’s some concern that this configuration restricts movement in saddle, especially when turning to the right. That is true, but I don’t think it’s going to restrict a shot unless you twist between 3 and 6 o’clock. Which, for righties, was already going to be challenging shot. It’s a trade off I’m willing to take for the ability to instantly rappel and have easy adjustments. The challenge can be alleviated by grabbing the hitch with your right hand and loosening a few inches, allowing you to twist more in the saddle. As long as you keep tension on the Smart, it’ll stay in place where it was and hold you. The slightly dangerous (more just scary) possibility is if you let up on the tension, the Smart/you will slide down the rope until the hitch grabs again. Not a big deal if you only pay out just a little extra slack to make the turn and mind to snug up the slack after your turn. Again, a small paracord tender makes this an easy one handed maneuver.

currently I have the smart 2.0 and have my backup below device, its pretty sketchy trying to rappel. I will definitely look at this setup above the smart 2.0.
Its to the point I ordered a BD 8 device to try.

How have you found it sketchy to rappel?
Just uneasy for me to trust in the device. finding that friction point to drop down. I've never done this before lol... i'll get the hang of it. just takes practice.

Yeah, keep practicing. I think you’ll find in time that with your setup (I’m doing the same thing) there’s actually a little bit of back and forth rhythm to loosening the friction hitch and tipping the device.

I found it increased my confidence a lot to climb up only one stick and just hang on my rappel rope as if I were descending but be hands free. Once you know it won’t drop you, and you can safely find what adjustments do allow to drop and how much (near ground level), rappelling down from way up becomes far smoother and quicker.

Going with the Mammut 2.0 for the upcoming season, mainly on my main tether foor
I picked one up here on the classifieds. I picked up the giant green HMS carabiner from EWO, neither that nor my black diamond carabiners reliably stop me with Canyon IV. It might be operator error, but I’m less confident than an 8 backed up with autoblock. And it is not any more smooth as an ascender than a tended schwabisch. If you buy, try the included carabiner, wish I would have, that’s likely my issue.

It does tend a hitch nicely, but the little plastic doohickey fromEWO is a lot lighter and quieter.

So, i had a big coupon at EMS, and they had a black diamond HMS carabiner. Decided to take a flyer on it, and it fixed the Mammut slipping issues. EWO is a great supplier, just don’t buy that big green HMS for this application. (I’m sure its fine for other things) Now using with Canyon IV, backing up with a michochoan on top For 2TC. It’s not the smoothest rappel, but safe and secure, but most importantly, quiet.

This!!! This right here is how you should run it with the Mammut......and agree on the rappel not being the smoothest but safe.

Are you rappelling with the Mich above the Smart too? How is that? Do you have to really squeeze the hitch to get it to release?

Put your weight on the Smart before trying to push the hitch down. The hitch can be used while descending to smooth the descent.
