Tethrd ESS D-Ring noise

Been playing around with some vet tape wrapped around the D-rings and it works great very simple to install.

The D-rings on the ESS did not need to be that big given that the bridge doesn't move on it when weighted. In fact, the manufacturer of the D-ring that is on the ESS makes a smaller D-ring that accommodates the same size webbing, but it isn't angled. But I don't recall John touting the angle effect of the D-rings as a "big deal" or game changer.

You can find the D-rings on DanO's site here: https://doublesteps.com/product/aluminum-d-ring/

According to the dimensions of these rings on Amazon, the non-angled version is 2.82"x2.81"x.37" whereas the angled version is 3.3"x2.94"x.38". Both rated to 4000 lbs.

I would bet that John has either modified the D-rings on the ESS or he is using his original hybrid.

Where did you get the tape at?

I got it at tractor supply if you don’t have one of those near you it can be purchased online.
EWO carries it in smaller rolls.

I havnt really had trouble with noise from the D-Rings on my ESS as much as I have had trouble with the weight of them pulling my panels apart while walking causing the lower panel to ride down.

I was able to fix this problem by going on the Treehopper website and purchasing a Recon Saddle.. Problem solved..

The recon is a nice saddle that’s for sure I just prefer the belt setup and the way the D-rings on the ESS payout the two panels better than the recon plates.
I haven’t had a problem with the weight of the D-rings pulling down the bottom panel while walking in the way I use the plastic clips to hold up the lower panel.
Actually there have been times I forgot I had it on while walking in.
Both the recon and ESS are great choices and hard to beat for comfort and adjustability for long sits.

So I just got my Ess after having a mantis and doing a bunch of research as to which saddle I needed vs modding the mantis. After playing in a tree in the backyard ive set everything up "my way" but can you explain how you did this in the rings? Did you just wrap them or did you use the socks in the first couple of pics? From what I can tell it looks like you cur the sock in half and placed it over the d ring after making some type of slip in the front for the bridge to come out and move? Im assuming you sewed the back half of the sock as well as where the bridge came out? Just trying to figure it all out from your posts. Any info or directions would help , you can pm me if thats better.thanks

The panel sag on the Recon is horrible compared to the ESS.

Agree however flipping the panels resolved the sag for me.

It helps but then it makes the Molle loops harder to access. I haven’t found a solution that I’m completely satisfied with yet.

Yes I basically used the end of a black sock to cover the D-rings just as you described.
I did cut a slit in the back to allow it to slide over the bridge and then sewed up the back side.
I later tried vet tape wrapped around the D rings and that also works and was much quicker to do but I no longer use the ESS after doing that fix so I can’t speak on the longevity of the vet tape over the D rings.

So you stopped using the Ess entirely? Or you went back to the sock instead of the vet tape? If you stopped entirely what made you switch and to which saddle did you switch? Sorry for all the questions just wondering about all my options

Yes I stopped using my ESS

A buddy and myself put a saddle together that I personally feel is near perfect so that’s my go to saddle.

It looks rough, but I put a strip of stealth strips on the tip/outside part of the rings. Then pieced stealth strips everywhere else. The pics were mainly for the new bridge but should help explain what I mean. I’ve hunted out of it twice and never had any noise. Bridge still slides like it should by just putting the SS on the outside.
I see you cut the web bridge off your ESS and put a utilibridge on it....I'm going to do the same thing. Just ordered one from cruzr.

I tried that exact thing myself. It works great and also helps to keep the d rings from flopping around and making noise.

I would have bought an ESS but the ring was not rubber coated like the Tree Hopper and the bridge was harder to adjust so it was a deal breaker for my 1st saddle. It was gonna be the ESS or the TH. I will say that I did like the ESS ring design better in function when researching. The only thing I'm gonna change is the LH/RH G hooks with a spring gate keeper like the Latitude models.
@ age 65 I doubt I'll buy another saddle in my life time. . I have a summit safety harness that came w/ my climber for about 20 yrs now made from the same webbing, so considering the comfort level of the TH, yea I'll be hard pressed to change. My body will give out 1st. Also Mark @ TH changed a couple things for me @ no charge w/ just a phone call that he instantly answered. Enough said!!
