Tethrd One Climbing Sticks

I also imagine there a bunch of these being sent back and streamlining the return is beneficial to all involved.

I understand this take; this is also acceptance from the company that their product has issues.

What I was ultimately getting at is, they are clearly not confident in their product otherwise they would stand behind it. It is standout and respectable that they are streamlining the return process; no denying that. It also shows there are issues that warrant that process.

Must be I hunt bigger trees than most. But how much overstep can be expected? This is about angles.

The step is 8.5" wide. put your heels together, and your feet in a V, and for benefit of the doubt, each foot centered 8.5" apart. Look at what you got.
I'm not really locked into standing on 2 feet. There appears to be better support of a single foot than any of the single-step sticks, and you can choose the foot you use. I'm not looking for real eastate to build a house and take up residence. I just wanna climb a tree. All I need is for the step to be comfortable enough to stand on long enough to do whatever I need to do to get to the next step, with enough purchase and grip that I don't fall off.

Hey man, whatever suits you. Buy em and try em. 30 day returns, buyer pays return shipping.

Played with them in the yard today another half hour. Foot room isn't near a big of a prob as I thought. Its useable. Getting used to using the dynaloc button now. Isn't as fiddly as it was at first. They do bite good. I just can't get the thought out of my head about their durability. I do hope they last.
It will speak volumes about this company how they treat people especially come hunting season with any problems about the stick. They start to screw people over then I absolutely will not ever give this company another cent.

I must observe, if not standing on 2 feet, that the real estate on the bottom step of the Tethrd ONE would not likely offer better support than a single step stick with a longer standoff. There is a pipe separating the two sides.

With that step being the transition from an aider, if using, I wonder if duck footing to that step would impart an undesirable twist to the aider (where most prefer to be toe to tree) and if instep to tree aider climbing might be preferable.

According to Ernie, they tested the stick with and without glue. The test without glue did not break until 900 lbs or so.
So 200# guys are breaking the glue in a natural environment and they tested up to 900#s. How didnt they know the glue wasnt going to hold up? It had to be breaking in testing, why even use it?.....Ive been drinking. Am I missing something?

Lol. Have a few more and your curiosity might lighten your wallet. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

LOL Im good with my Beast Sticks. I have plenty of pounds to shed from other places before I need to worry about a couple ounces of stick weight. Now, if they want to get that real world test up to about 280# Ill gladly be their newest "prostaff" member! Your "have a few more" advice is spot on though :grinning:

Well I tried replacing the pins tonight. What an absolute nightmare. I would strongly suggest to anyone not to buy these sticks until they start coming with the orange ones outta the box. The first two came out as easily as shown in the video ernie made. And I followed his instructions to a T. The next two were unbelievably stuck. I marred the one hole pretty good. Then I saw glue squeeze out of where the step meets the tube. So now Im paranoid about that. There is no way no how these pins were designed to be user replaceable. What a disaster.

2 of my 3 weren't bad to replace, that last one though....almost grabbed the 3lb hammer.

I had to use a 3/16 drill bit to drill through the pins, and that made it really easy. I tried to use a punch as directed before thinking of that idea and it was miserable and an abject failure. By the way, I only replaced the top pins because of how frustrating it was. Bottom ones are exactly the same in orange vs black. No reason to replace them.

Drill through them like I did. I don't know why they didn't recommend this method as a backup. They glued the hell out of these pins and there is no way for a punch to make it through some of them.

Having to replace my own pins bothered me. I appreciate that they sent replacements, but the steps were so frustrating to try to put together with the original pins....how could they not have known that this would be a big deal?

But the most annoying thing to me was that every had no offering or plan for an aider! What the hell?!? They could have made TONS of extra money up front by designing and releasing one in tandem with the steps. Instead they had this ridiculous method of attaching a bungee between aider ends to hold it on.

As a result, I took my 2 step amsteel aider from EWO that has spliced eyes at the top and girth hitched them around each final end block of the bottom step. It worked well. Had Tethrd simply released this aider they would have made lots of money and given everyone something that they would want to use the moment they get climbing sticks.

I'm just shocked at the lack of preparedness. I don't understand.

Got to put mine to the test today with all of my final modifications made to the sticks. My review:

The Good:

Weight - The light weight is truly great. I hang them from a kydex clip attached to my saddle and the feel is amazing.

Noise - Once stealth stripped, there was no noise. Less than my Hawks. All of the whining I've heard here about that has been ridiculous.

Tree Attachment - The dynalite attachment method is dynamite. I'll see after time if the dyneema starts fraying. That's my only fear. But so far so good.

Space - I'm a size 10 shoe, and there was more than enough purchase for me feet on the tops. I angled my feet more than with the Hawks, but I liked the feel on my feet better than my Heliums. I can see how it might be a bit too little for guys with enormous feet, but it was great for me.

The Bad:

Stacking Attachment - Is improved now that I have the smaller orange pins in the top that Tethrd mailed me this week. Still very frustrating to get them apart without making noise or banging your hand against some sharp metal piece on some portion of the stick. As I mentioned in a previous post, I had to drill through the old stacking pins to get them out and swap them out because a punch and the world's strongest hammer wasn't working. No bueno.

Organizing ropes: no easy way to wind the dyneema around the sticks individually because it blocks the pin attachment in most lengthwise configurations. I ended up stacking them 2 by 2 and wrapping both ropes around the two stick bundle together. Tethrd: The sticks need a plastic component that encircles the tube of each stick that offers some way to hold and wrap the rope, like a vacuum cleaner.

Tube tops open - Technically, this could cause clanging echo noises, so if I hadn't fixed this, noise would have been in the Bad category as a whole. Tethrd needs to put rubber stoppers upon sale in the top.

For the tops and bottoms of the tubes, rather than spraying like others have done, I purchased solid rubber stoppers from Amazon and then sawed them to fit into the holes without too much overlap. Because the girth increases as the stopper gets longer, it's a snug fit. I didn't need to glue because they don't come out, even if you shake them upside down. Spraying foam is unnecessary.

Length of steps - 4 steps plus a 2 step aider on the bottom step only got me 18 feet up.

Notes: As I mentioned in a previous post, I simply "girth hitched" my spliced eye EWO two step aider onto the bottom step of my bottom stick. This method works excellent, and seems much better and safer than the method Tethrd recommends with a bungee holding the ends of the aider on the stick. See attached image. It's also unbelievably easy to put on/take off so you could move the aider with ease between steps.

All in all, I like them a lot. I wish I didn't have to do so much work on them out of the box, but I plan on using them this fall as my primary climbing method.

Will be practicing in the meantime and will let you all know if I experience any issues. If Tethrd didn't rush so much and got all of these issues addressed up front, these would be taking the saddle world by storm. They have great ideas. They should commit themselves to better testing and implementing recommendations before launch. Not having an aider for sale designed for the system to buy with the sticks is still mind blowing to me, considering the money that could be made and the convenience to the consumer.

Nice write-up, but the pros and cons of the product mean nothing to me if the glue is breaking on the steps. After hearing more info, I believe it's just a matter of time on every stick till the glue breaks. At that point these sticks are nothing but scrap metal to me

Good write up , as for the hollow tube I just wrapped mine with camo form by gear aid . No more clang and for the roll pins I my end up replacing with a grade bolt if those become an issue .

My issue is, why would a $110-120 per stick need so many modifications to be made safe, let alone functional.

I mean my XOP, Lone Wolf and Beast sticks all came with rubber tube caps. A rubber cap so junk doesn’t get inside. So it doesn’t echo when clanked. Probably what a .10 cent part when bought in bulk....
