I wanted to hunt a field edge that gives me a viewpoint down in to a creek bottom this morning, but my weather app and BaseMap both forecasted a wind that was shifting at 8:00 am and would be bad for that tree. So, I was headed to a different spot, but as I was walking and testing the wind it was perfect for where I wanted to be. I decided that even if I only had a good wind until 8:00, it was worth it.
At exactly 8:00 I had 3 does walk in front of me at 40 yards. Sure enough 2 minutes later an 8 pointer came right on their trail. I don’t know if the wind started to shift or what, but he got about 65 yards from me, stopped and threw his nose in the air. I wasn’t willing to chance it, so I squeezed off a shot with my Encore 260 and he took off down a ridge and I heard him crash about 5 seconds later.
I waited 30 minutes (and the wind had indeed shifted), climbed down and recovered the deer.
BTW, I was in a ladder stand and have no regrets. When it gets really cold like it was this morning, I sometimes prefer to make my life easier.
