The “Button Runner”. A 0.8 oz silent step attachment. **EDIT** read warning

First post, but I have been following the site for quite some time. I found these on Amazon and figured I would share since this looks to be a good option. View attachment 26156

Hey Welcome and thanks for the post. Unfortunately, those are aluminum, Chinese knockoffs. They are also the wrong size for how I was using them. Please don’t ever use those to support your body weight. Even if tethered in. They will break

Thanks for the heads up. I appreciate it!

MTS is there something I can look up that will show how to make your knot? That's a great idea man.

I’ll have to make a video at some point. It’s kind of like a soft shackle, but I do a couple of things different.

you ever get a video on that knot at the end? does the size of the daisy loops make a difference? meaning you think you could take one that would fit a versa button and add a knot without issue?

I think that would be fine. I’ll try to get a video up soon

You using 7/64" amsteel? also how long of a piece do you suggest starting with for loops and knot at the end? I was thinking 15'?

Sorry, I looked up my notes. It’s 16’ to start and end up with about 6.5-7’ total.

Here are my notes:

I start with a 16’ length of 7/64” Amsteel.

Fold in half and make a 2.5” loop with a locked Brummel splice. Continue making 2.5” locked Brummells (about 20 of them).

You should now have about 52” of daisy chain.

Go to tag ends and mark each strand at 20” and 12”

Do a 4 strand taper on each tag end

Start fishing from 20” mark and grab at 12”.

Pull through and leave a loop the diameter of a ‘Sharpie’. These do NOT need to be locked Brummell because there is an adequate length bury and they will be tied off in the next step. They can’t come undone.

Repeat on other strand.

Overhand knot both strands leaving loops exposed.

Pull loops over to form button.

Thanks placed my order yesterday.
Liking the idea of a lighter (easier) attach method for the steps. Is it pretty solid for Ameristeps if you limit side pressure while climbing?

Figured if it doesn't work I'll at least have a daisy chain with a knot on the end.

Cool.

Yes, it is just fine for Ameristeps. Just step straight down and keep your foot/knee as close to the tree as possible.

I have even shaved off the side wings and some of the length on my Ameristeps to reduce bulk and weight and it works fine.

I usually attach mine about a foot higher than I want the step to be and then wiggle the whole thing down so it tightens as the tree taper gets naturally wider.

How many climbs have you done with this setup? Any issues so far?

Maybe around 15-20 climbs. No issues. I am very cognizant of avoiding side pressure though.

So I have the two loops exposed and in an overhand knot. Can’t seem to get them to stick into a button formation by pulling them over.

NVM. I used a lanyard knot. Man I went to the hammock forums and there are all kinds of knots I didn't know existed. Most of them look similar. Some share two different names. Apparently the lanyard knot is also called the diamond knot. Don't know pros and cons of this one, but it seemed to work on the tree.
Any thoughts on the knot options? I'm now looking for bulk 7/64 amsteel.

It’s cheap but shipping is $18. R&W is .19/ft but they don’t have black. Gray and bright colors only.

This is pretty much how I make the button except that i don’t do locked Brummell (not necessary for this knot-actually probably weakens the knot)
