The everyman's guide to killing a deer with a compound bow...

I hear u and totally agree....cant gain anything without experience....small game is fun but dont get me charged up like whitetail and hogs. Maybe after I tag out this season I'll be over the shakes....

Yeah right...who I kidding. I not very good at hunting yet or I got really bad luck or probably combination of the 2.
Stick your target on front of your truck and shoot. That'll learn ya to shoot under pressure. :)

How far did you shoot? I'm with Kyle on wanting a no-thought-required shot out to 30 yards. I don't wanna hold high or low. I wanna make a snap-second "in range or out of range" decision and settle a pin.
I shot out to 30 with a keller pendulum sight. Which they no longer make. I was good from the base of the tree out to 30 yards. My son still uses one. I use a Trophy ridge pendulum sight you can lock the sight and it's a moveable single pin sight . Get a good 25 yards on the sight unlock it and it's good from the base of the tree out to 35 yards . My bow speed on my bow now is 278 at 57 pounds

Pendulum sights have always interested me. One of my idols (bob sheppard) uses one. I think i would too if I consistently climbed to a fixed height.

If you have a slider/multipin/pendulum and are comfortable with ranging, I see no problem with a 230fps bow.

I had one pin out to 25 yards with a light arrow 350 grains TAW and a rage for the past 15 years. 26.5 DL @60lbs.
I killed a lot of deer. However I hit too many deer high on the close shots 12- 17 yards. They still died but I was playing with fire. This year I jumped up to 510 grains (FOC-19%) with a 15 and a 25 yard pin. My 35 yard pin is only for 2nd shot attempts after a hit. I only range trees around 25 yards, so I know if its half that use pin #1. It's kinda like having 1 pin. I never shoot past 25 yards at deer.
Most of my shooting is around 15 yards.

My new set up is at 232 FPS.
Tooth of an arrow 125grain/1" are flying great.
Even had the nose button added and removed my peep. I love it so far, remember only shooting 25 yards!
I agree, just reduce your range! What a difference that arrow makes! My targets are now rocking when that log hits them!

I wish there was a way to better prepare for this.....I get so excited it's not even funny....
Have you ever tried shooting on a dart or video archery range? This practice does wonders for "shot timing" which is really the issue for most. You are concerned you will not be able to get the shot off in time once the animal is in range which raises anxiety. If you don't want to pay to shoot a few of the dart video archery ranges, you can mimic this by watching hunting videos with shot scenarios only and turning the sound off and practice drawing on these animals as they come in. Don't get caught up in the animal you're hunting either. The African game video sequences are excellent as most of them critters really move in and out quick. Yes, 3D shooting helps with range estimation but in my opinion, shot timing is what gets most people freaked out at the time an animal comes in. Also, don't look at the antlers! Finally, if you don't get breathing a little heavy and feel that tension a little bit, I wouldn't think its fun any more. That's the primal predator coming out of each of us. You can do that with any animal that suddenly becomes your target.

I dont think we have anything like that around here....altleast as far as I know.

I was calm for the doe I harvested last year but I think that was because she had been around in the area for 30mins and the excitement had passed a little....I just know as soon as I see tan or black movement my body goes into hyper overload.....addictive feeling....I like it but dont at the same time...need more self control.

I've tried the jumping jack, push up, routine while practicing and i.can shoot good then....its totally different when a delicious animal is around....man...I'm ready for season to start

It doesn't matter what height you are I shot it at 15 feet and 25 feet up in a tree and it still works. Now my bow shoots 278 now . I alway liked the pendulum sights. I have an HAA a two CBE archery 3d sights sitting in the gun safe.

I can put two pendulum sights on the classifieds if there is serious interest. One is old 2005 ish but never used, still in the blister pack from Cobra. The other one is used very slightly but don't remember the manufacturer. I thought I might try it again some time but now I'm toying with the EZV.

I wish I could tell you a mind trick that would make it go away, but I don't know one. Sometimes it still creeps up on me.
This may sound weird, but something that helped me get over that (I still get overly excited) as far as a mind trick goes is I picture the buck mouthing my momma and it takes me from school girl giddy to some semblance of keeping it together because now I HAVE to get the job done...nobody mouths my momma

I haven’t shot my bow since October last year. Unscrewed a 135 Simmons and screwed in a 175 grizzly. Took that arrow and one with a 125gr field point out back and shot each AO separate dots to see the drop.....

Then shot them both at the same dot to check grouping.....

I’ll get it back out in September when it’s time to hunt.

Yards?

This is a great post, The heavy arrow stuff sure looks expensive and time consuming. any posts like this where I can learn to find a good tree to hang in. I am not looking for a big buck or even a buck at all I just want to kill a deer this year.

I think some mao inhibitors will take away those jitters pretty good. Is it mao? I’m pretty sure it is.

Fanciness and speed dont mean squat if you cant hit the squat you shoot at when its crunch time. You just look pretty missing and the faster you shoot the faster you miss. None of it matters if you cant calm the nerves and make the shot.
