The No-Shame Thread

I'm a bad "Plan B" guy.

1) Last year I got up at 3 o'clock, drove an hour to a public land for the gun season opener. As I was approaching the parking area I noticed the thermometer said 1 degree. I knew it was going to be cold but I couldn't make myself pull over. I drove on a bit into a small town, talked some courage into myself and turned around to head back to park and hunt. When I got back to the spot a truck had pulled in since I drove by originally. Disgusted, I drove the hour back home and climbed back in bed.

2) A few years ago I digitally scouted a new public land an hour from home to try for gun opener (see a theme here?). Got up wicked early, made the drive (saw a nice 8 point crossing the interstate), parked and hiked way up a mountain to where I had picked out some good looking benches and saddles to set up on. I had hauled my treestand all that way. Picked a tree, climbed, and was hanging my stand when I dropped the pin that held the hanging strap. I heard it hit the leaves 20 feet below me. I climbed down and searched on my hands and knees trying to find that pin. No luck. I packed all my stuff, hiked back down, drove home and didn't hunt the rest of the weekend.

Like I said. I'm a bad "Plan B" hunter. I wish I didn't get so fixated on a certain plan.

I prefer turkey hunting over all other hunting.

I only duck hunt because of my dog.

I only like hunting with 3 people out of the dozens I hunt with

I miss sitting over feeders and food plots, mainly because I could at least watch deer. I've hunted almost 20 times this year and seen 4 deer. Only one of which was legal.

I spend all my free time watching youtube channels. Can't remember the last time I watched an actual movie or tv show.

I would move to a northern state in a heartbeat if my girlfriend didn't just get her dream job here.

Youre going to love it. I have a newer model 70 in 300win mag with a bunch of cusomizations done to it that is my go to....

But I also have a new in box 1960's model 70 featherweight in 6.5 swede in my safe. Technically it's my father's, but no one can bring themselves to shoot it...
I love the 6.5 Swede. I own two. One 1917 Gustav and a brand new custom I just finished this year.

I cringe when people talk about how old deer are and/or how much they weighed when field dressed... Who cares?

I wasn't there when the deer was born and my bathroom scale didn't fit in my dump pouch.
Totally agree

I am surprised at the number of people who hate morning hunts. I would hunt mornings over evenings any day. I love shooting deer in the mornings; you have all day to track, recover, butcher, etc. I hate shooting deer at last light; tracking, recovery, and gutting in the dark with a headlamp SUUUUUCKS...

I am a very sweaty person, so I would rather walk in the dark and climb when it is colder, than have to do it during the hottest part of the day after the sun just beat down on everything for hours. (And this is in a "cold weather" state)

Can I get an Aaaaaaaa-men

I was just in Target with my wife and "Blondie - The Tide is High" started playing. Not only did I sing along with it, but I confess I knew all the words. I dare you to watch this, it will be stuck in your head too! https://g.co/kgs/gJBo2i
I'm a dirt digging Christian redneck, but,
"The tide is high and I'm holding on, I'm gonna be your number one, nuuuumber ooooone"
Oh well, it ain't bluegrass but I did grow up in tbe 80's.
Unashamed right?!?!?!

Here are a few of mine I jotted down on stand earlier.

Not so much anymore, but I told none of my family and friends about saddle hunting at first. I was basically embarrassed. Safe space here, but I'm sorry, I still think it is total dork gear. It got even dorkier when the tacticool zombie invader crowd became early adopters. And then we got the youtubers, and the hunting bros, my, what company.

"My tethrd oplux broke guy" of 2020. I didn't trust his story, at least the deets. Definitely didn't smell right. Still I was a total wimp about my thethrd for the first half of season. I tinkled a little every time I climbed and set up. I think exposure therapy is working.

I've wounded a few deer in my life that went unrecovered. I make every effort not to lose them and I'm a pretty good tracker. But I didn't cry in my pillow, burn my tag, or let it haunt me for days. I cast it out of my mind and went hunting the next day. Chit happens, I shouldn't say this, but they are deer. More die and rot on the highway each day than I'll lose in 20 lifetimes. I'm kind of cynical as is but I've grown to loathe internet hunter sanctimony in general.

I get my work done and then some, and dig in when I need to, but I definitely can claim to be a professional hunter with all the time I've been paid to map scout and cruise these sites.

I too get the major husband/dad guilt, self imposed and otherwise. It gets tough this time of year, but we handle it. At the same time I do feel some envy that guys can just pop off to the midwest for weeks at a time. Back in the day had the freedom to, but not the money. Now I got the money but I'd rather not part with 1/2 (or be a pos father) so here I sit in the mountain laurel praying if I spend 100 hours on stand I'll see a good one. I mean yeah I do enjoy the big woods but it reaches a point where I wouldn't mind the sufferfest being a little easier. Someday...

Daaaayyyuuummmmm, you would hate the military lol my entire life in the corps was "adapt and overcome" or "adapt or die", I never knew what I was doing until I was doing it even then it was a crap shoot, plan b was always the only option........

This thread is crazy and hilarious. I guess I will add a few of my more unpopular opinions.

My deepest hunting sins are that--

  • I love shooting small bucks- I always have and after killing over 25 bucks including a few P&Y, I still love it.

  • I like hunting over bait from time to time- mostly with my longbow cause it helps me to get them "longbow close".

  • I think people are way too concerned about making an "ethical shot" on a deer- while I do not encourage people to be completely careless, wounding a deer is an inherent risk in hunting and it is not worth crying over. It is just a deer, they sit half alive on the side of the road for hours and get eaten alive by coyotes.

  • I think youth hunting seasons are dumb- I think they actually hurt hunter retention by giving false hope to youngsters.

  • I think deer heart taste better than backstraps or tenderloins
Deer Heart is THE best!!

Took my bow to the shop to get new strings put on this year. Got it home and it was a tack driver. I promptly cranked the limb bolts down and started trying to bareshaft tune my arrows “ranch fairy” style. Even moved the rest a little. Now this thing shoots like hot dog crap. Point of impact changing every shooting session. Blamed it on the new overly fancy Garmin Xero that I switched to this year. Even convinced Garmin this sight is faulty. I sent it back to them for a new one and put on my old sight only to have it do the EXACT. SAME. THING. Finally swallowed my pride, and took it back to the shop. Cams are out of time and the center shot is off. Surprise, surprise....

TL/DR - I shouldn’t be allowed to tune a bow.

Am I expected to read 316 posts? I was out of internet service for past 3 days. I was supposed to be hunting but took my dad with who has Alzheimer's. It was really an eye opener to see what my mom goes through daily. Let's just say a hunting shack with no running water was not fun.

But I got to make some memories with my dad!!!

Getting to topic....
I find it easier to use my Rivers edge climbing sticks with the saddle. It is the ultimate setup for presets. I still own tree stands but really don't use them.

I never really felt safe in tree stands, even with a harness.

I only got into saddle hunting because I almost fell hanging stands one too many times. The last time my son was watching and I decided that was the last time I would ever do that. I used climbing sticks but would only use the tree stand harness while actually hanging stands.

I think my summit viper is the most comfortable stand but I hate the weight, noise, and cumbersome size. A smaller version would be the perfect stand.

The best group I’ve ever shot with a deer rifle was with an old featherweight in 6.5. I like the creedmoor but the Swede was just as good and almost everyone in this country ignored it.

Americans don't like decimals or the metric system, and 4 out of 3 people can't understand fractions...

That’s true but they didn’t exactly show much love for the 260 either.
