"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

Not sure why i am having difficulty posting photos here on SH? After my first season of saddle hunting, I definitely learned a great deal and one significant lesson was carrying less "stuff" is prudent. To that end, I put a BWMG platform pack on the Christmas list, with a few accessories to make it very functional. The way I have it set up at present.....with EDP platform and four 20" Beast Gear sticks and a few necessities, it weighs in at 13.6# With season recently concluded, my wife and I visiting our kids in FL and winter suddenly hitting us.....it will be a little while before I get to test it outside. But in basement testing, it feels pretty good and everything goes on and off well. Of course what happens in the woods is the real test, so the jury is still out.

Posting this here to give feedback and ask / look for other options. I recently got the sumpter pictured here, after many many hours of looking for the end all be all pack. I must put it where credit is due, this thing is wicked. Tons of room for everything, 2600 C.I. All though have not had chance to use the meat hauler it is a neat form on that option as it completely hides away. For the cons… I am too tall for this. 22-23” torso and with just platform and sticks (I know the muddys weigh an unholy amount) with the way it was fitting me is what I imagine a knife in the shoulder blades feels like. Just unbearable no matter how I adjusted it.( It uses a very strong Velcro on the front to adjust height of the straps.) It is awesome just not for us tall guys in my opinion. Hopefully save someone the head ache I have had.

And with that, If you have similar measurements as me and would recommend a pack that would be awesome. Thank you all.

I am also tall, a 21" torso. There is a thread on packs for tall guys.
Myster Ranch has some packs for tall guys. I have a Kifaru but they are crazy expensive.

I believe Badlands has some reasonable options, as well...

If that's all you need, for $40 the SOG is not a bad fit. It's light and packs down flat, has that shelf for the platform, plenty of space for the rest, molle to strap clothing to.

in the interest of keeping it cheap and cheerful to start, I picked up the SOG. I swapped over the pack tonight from my old one. I think this will be a better pack than I was using. It has a similar layout of primary and secondary pockets. I can put my ‘base of the tree’ gear in the top of the main pouch. That’s my knee pads, tethers and rappel rope. In the bottom of that compartment I have my big light and spare tether. All stuff that can get damp. The top pouch on the outside gets my ‘in the tree’ gear that would be in my sys hauler like my face mask, rangefinder, release. It’s on top of the bag so easy access when I pull it up. The platform will go in the outer strapped pouch when I get it out of the tree it’s currently in. In the bottom outer pocket which is less accessible I have my recovery gear (knife, drag rope). Odds and ends (tags, permits, pencil, small saw, water bottle) all fit in various pockets. My jacket will strap underneath. I’ll have to play with straps and sticks if I want to do that. I’m sure a single long stick longways will work with just a pair of rubberized wire straps. I think my pull up rope will stay in the sys hauler. Same for the gear strap. They are super light and easy there. I may move the spare tether there also for easy access going up or down the tree just in case.
