"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

For anyone that has or is using the monster fanny pack can you comment on the noise level while using (zippers and walking through brush). I’ve been reading mixed reviews.

Does anyone know if a predator platform will fit inside a MR pop up 18?? TIA

I didn’t have an issue with noise either way really, in fact i’m a fan of the kinda oversized, textured zipper pulls.

Here is pop up 18 with predator and assassin.. I bought one on black ovis on sale. I removed waist belt as I don’t like them.. I am pretty I
Pressed with this pack. It has plenty of room for an all day sit if u don’t film. Lots of lashing options.

Does predator fit in the main compartment? I’m hoping for carry my sticks in the shelf.

I can verify for you tomorrow but I’m pretty sure it will. U could run sticks on shelf and lash predator to outside. The assassin was fine on the outside predator would be nicer on it.

Anyone ever just added suspenders to a fanny pack? In my quest for packs, I've been wanting to give the monster fanny pack a try. Recently tried the Eberlestock Tailhook and it was a little much for me. I have a Tenzing 720 that's a pretty good size and seems to stay on my hips. Thought about adding some extra elastic clip on suspenders and seeing if that allows me to increase the weight without compromising comfort.

Alps pathfinder is great. Removable shoulder harness. I mostly use it for camera gear now, but on occasion use it hunting.

Have a pathfinder as well, really like it

I have one too. I like the format, and when I use the expandable upper pack (it zips into the fanny pack lid, so it sounds small, but I think I remember a predator fitting in there) I like it ... but that pack feels very heavy to me for what it is, too. Last year I used an Alps Commander X without the bigger bag on it, and that's also heavy... I think it's an Alps design/material thing.

This year I'm putting time into learning to one-stick & rappel to try and cut down on the weight I'm carrying in. I like the option to try and quarter-out a deer, but honestly, that's only happening about 2% of the time I carry the bag(s) in, and they become wasted weight, space, hassle. I'd be pretty happy if I could find a highly compressable frame rig that could carry a quartered deer, but also otherwise fit down into my turkey vest.

Yes, works great.

I have the Badlands Monster fanny pack. I like it for certain run and gun hunt situations, but mostly use it with my pre set locations. Because of the profile and shape of the pack, when it's attached to to tree it is easy to access and the top of it acts like a little shelf, the support bar makes it rigid enough for that. The issue is that it can only attach securely to certain sized trees because of the limitations of the waist belt, but if the tree is the right size, it's awesome. The Doyle's gear hoist attaches nicely on either side of the belt area. I am working on a way to attach the Predator Pack to the back of it as well so that it's removable. I noticed Zach from THP had it attached to his Monster pack so that gave me the idea. Sticks can be attached to the bottom, although not ideal that they are horizontal, it works well enough. I like the pack because I use it for turkey hunting, putting trail cams out, short hikes, etc. A few pictures to give you the idea.

do you find your sticks snagging anything? I have lots of spots where you are twisting thru thick 1" type trees as you work your way into an area.
thanks for posting the pics.

Interested in this method... care to explain or have a picture?

Got the idea from this guy. Currently I use the swaider on 1st and step up to platform. This keeps me from having to dangle and move the tether. Just use lineman belt on the way up.

If I am going through thick stuff the sticks will snag every now and then for sure. Those sticks are also 24" sticks. If you had cut down Hawks or something shorter it wouldn't be as bad. That's the downfall of packing in with sticks with that pack. I don't think there is a good way to pack the sticks vertically with that pack.
