"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

I’ve been in the same boat, had my mind made up, changed plans, didn’t matter because everything I want is now out of stock

Sounds exactly like me, I think I’ve made up my mind and then something changes it....geeze this shouldn’t be that complicated but I sure don’t want to spend that kind of money and be disappointed!!

If a guy wants a small frame pack for thick brush and timber I think the popup fits the bill, for just a normal day pack it mite be over kill, I wanted something to strap my little stand to and extra clothes if need be. If I was just carrying an extra coat and lunch and stuff I would probably pick a different pack, unless you wanted the option of packing something out afterwards in the same trip like meat. Every other old frame pack I have is so big and bulky there’s no way I could slip through the woods without hanging up on brush and stuff making a ton of noise, the popup is narrow on me, it should work good for what I want.

I have a Wilderness Pack Specialties Muley lumbar pack for rifle day hunts when I’m on the ground, made in the USA and they are super great to deal with, I have pounded on that thing and it looks like new. I never here much about them here, but they make great packs from my experience with the Muley.

Just ordered pop up 28 at midway, says they'll ship tomorrow. My X2 i ordered 3 weeks ago is on backorder til mid august, may see how the pop up feels before i cancel x2.

What size do you have? I was worried a little on the size chart. I got an xl by the way they wanted me to measure. This is my first good pack.

Large, and the way I understand it the only difference between the large and xl is the length of the waist strap, the frame adjustability for torso length is the same for large and xl I think, this was my most expensive pack purchase as well, so I would think just your waist straps will be longer than mine, I am 6’1” and have a 36” waist, I have a long torso and this pack was easy to adjust and had more than enough length for me.

I've heard the bad thing about the mystery ranch packs is the noise factor. Has anyone used one of these or made your own cover for your pack?

I'm seeing a lot of good thing said about the pop up 28, but the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is that it only opens from the top. Also, no molly loops... I wish the pop up 28 had the zipper configuration of the pintler... I'd would go with the pintler, but A... its huge... probably much bigger than I'll need...B... price...C... I like the accessibility of the pop up load shelf a lot more... I'd like to carry my sticks in the load shelf, platform strapped to the front with the main bag really reserved for water, snacks and winter clothes... I'm in MN so I go from wearing jeans and a long sleeve shirt, to 3 to 4 layers with first lite sanctuary setup... so my extra clothing goes from zero to filling a whole pack... just wondering if there are people with a similar setup that works well for carrying in bulky layers

The pop up 38 zips on the side and has a platform compartment and meat shelf.

I keep hearing that too & I’m glad I didn’t let it sway me from a great pack. I think in sub 20 degree weather through high stem count stuff it “could “ be noisy but I’m not gonna be a ninja through that anyhow.

I haven’t hunted in the air in almost 20 years, this will be my first year for a saddle, I still hunt with a rifle in the big woods, I am anal about noise, I have no intentions of covering my popup 28 with anything its quiet enough for how I plan to use it, my 2 day assault is noisy, there like 2 different packs when it comes to noise, at least mine are, I am going use the assault for running cameras and stuff, both are awesome packs but my assault is loud, the material is different.

Wish I could get my hands on the Pop Ups. I’m looking at the 28, 38, and the Sitka 4000 now.

Wouldn't that be nice, just like boots, theres no place around me that has the good stuff in stock!

28 seems great for just whitetail and even though that’s all I’m doing at the moment.. I was thinking if I could make one of the bigger packs work to compress down but also have the volume for more, why not ya know? The Sitka 4000 is really 3700 but expands to 4500 if needed. Making it the same size as the Pop Up 38 until it expands.. toughest decision of all my gear so far! Lol

I feel, ya I’ve been going back and forth for 2 weeks!! One question, can you haul meat in the sitka pack?

I walk forest roads in, usually a couple miles, then bushwack usually another half mile, I hunt thick nasty country, briars and beech whips and stuff, I cant stand a pack that is wider than me catching and slapping on brush, the 28 is not going to do that, I have been out west a couple times, Montana and Idaho, the country I hunted in out there a wide pack would have worked fine, Im sure every place is different but that was my experience, the big draw of the 28 for me was the dump pouch and ability to haul most anything if the need arises.

Yes, the 4000 is rated to 150 lbs. It also has the stuff pouch/dump pouch as well as the top lid for easy access stuff. I think it would work but I think the 38 would work too. I guess it will come down to availability and price. I would love to make a trip out west!
