The official saddle hunting fanny pack /lumbar pack thread

What didn’t you like about this?
I did like it, but after a duration I realized 2 things: I never was actually going to use the lineman's loops on the belt, and webbing molle is better than laser-cut for a larger variety of connection types... So I streamlined some features and switched to the MG setup that I'm using now.

This thread popped up today with Bowhunt’s post so I thought I would give an update on the Alps Little Bear setup that I was looking at 4 years (!) ago on page 3 of this post. I have used the Alps Little Bear with the Turkey pockets accessory kit now for 4 seasons. Frankly, when I bought it I considered it to be more of a ”transition” setup than a permanent solution. Thought I would upgrade to a higher quality bag after a couple of seasons after getting a feel for what I really needed. Yet, 4 years later it continues to do everything I want it to do so I will be using it again for a 5th season in 2025. I don’t search for problems to justify a new/different solution, so if something works, I stick with it.

Bottom LIne Upfront: I would call this an economy setup with the Little Bear and the Turkey pockets accessory kit running $55 & $30 respectively on Amazon. Great for one sticking. You can attach your stick to the fanny, I prefer to carry my stick on an adjustable shoulder strap simply because it’s much quicker and more accessible when I reach the tree. Not sure it would work as well for a sticks setup. You could probably carry a lightweight stick setup horizontally across the fanny, but most prefer to carry their sticks vertically. If you are creative and handy you could make it work, but most aren’t so a different, out of the box solution may work better for vertical sticks.

Pros:
- Value/Durablity. I thought the bag would last about two years, but it’s done 4 seasons and it’s still in great shape going into 2025. At the time, I considered it worth $80 for only one season and I’ve already got 4 out of it. So, a great value.
- Light starting weight: I don’t want a bag that weighs over 5lbs when it’s empty, this rig comes in at less than 3lbs empty.
- Expandable storage: Turkey pockets accessory kit shines with the lightweight nylon game bag that attaches to the back. Bag has room for all of my outer and mid layers, gaiter, beanie, gloves etc. for the walk in and out and only weighs about an ounce. When you don’t have layers you aren’t carrying capacity/bag weight you don’t need.
- Front Turkey pockets: Hold all immediate access setup items right up front (pic). Backband, hys strap, large headlight, extra mini mag light, compass, thermos, grunt call it all fits in those two pockets. They will also hold a I a small limb saw and a set of hand pruners but I sewed holders on the fronts of the pockets so I have even more immediate access to those items while climbing/setting up. Having the pockets on the front balances the weight distribution of the whole setup front and back so it really feels like you are wearing nothing.
- Fanny has a well padded hip belt with a couple of small outer pockets on the belt and main bag. Frankly with the pockets up front, I barely use 1/4 of the fanny capacity, as I run a couple of dump pouches to have immediate access to stuff that others may want to put in the fanny itself. Works well for me as this gives me room in the fanny for when I want to carry in a few cell cams.

Con’s:
- As mentioned above, probably not quite as well suited to carrying a stack of sticks vertically.
- The game bag clips to the top of the harness shoulder straps and if you bend over with it loaded the bag will tend to flop around a bit, I just tied the bottom of the bag to the fanny and that solved that problem.
- The weight of the layers in the game bag ride mostly on the shoulders. I’m going to lower the bag clips to try and get the weight on the fanny/hip belt. This is more of an old man problem than anything lol….but I’m struggling to find cons so I thought I would throw it out there.

Good Luck to everyone in 2025!

"Final" rendition of my current use MG/Kifaru/ATS/FHF lumbar setup. I can connect the Kifaru Sherman Pocket as a small pack if needed/wanted, as well. The photos show the FHF Folding Field Seat installed, but I typically only use that during turkey season or hiking/scouting with the rifle.
On the yoke, can you utilize the molle there? At the top of the back.

Absolutely, although you would have to remove the system to get to it. I don't utilize it personally, because when I run my Sherman Pocket as a mini-pack, it does cover it up (you can see the buckles I'm using above the molle portion off of the shoulders).

I've been experimenting with the Platow and Gravely 18 from Mystery ranch. I have ordered the whole belt/yoke/lumbar pouch system from Marsupial gear though, as I think the yoke design may work a little better than what I have going on with the Platow.

It should result in a very lightweight system that I can still throw an extra layer in the Gravely and all my other supplies in the lumbar pack and side pouches on the belt.

I use a platow pack with a tethrd predator pack attached to the shoulder straps to carry my mini seeker platform. Tree styx lashed to the bottom of the pack. Nice and light, carries everything and then some if need be. I like having the platform on my shoulder straps so I can simply reach back over my shoulder and grab it, and hang it once at hunting height. No need to take my pack off to get it.

Are you able to access your sticks without removing pack? That's the biggest gripe with my set up, I mount my sticks vertically and feel I'd have to give that up to facilitate being able to access without removing.

Not sure if makes more sense then a pack even for short hunts. 2TC, bow pull line, bow hanger in Fanny. A single pouch on my saddle could likely hold the same stuff, I just don’t like the extra weight on my saddle if walking in.IMG_0035.png

I did it to keep weight off my saddle when i don't need additional layers, but there's certain stuff that lives on my saddle (from a safety perspective).

@gcr0003 can you clip Fanny onto ambush? Take another thing off your waist.. I’m sure you could girth hitch some buckles to match up with the fanny

Outerwear Pockets?

Well the one way this makes sense over a pack is I’m not having to set a pack down and take stuff out. I can walk to the tree, set my bow down, take stuff out the fanny, and start climbing. So maybe it is worth trying out.

@gcr0003 yeah I thought about that after I typed it haha, but if it has stuff you dont need to access until you’re on platform it may be an option. (Tree tether, knife, headlamps, snacks etc)
Other issue is that the side of the ambush away from my back is actually where I stand so it could go on there (would need removed before setting on the tree). So I think for not the Fanny makes the most sense.

Both of my tethers come out at the base of the tree since it’s my climbing method. The only thing that takes a ride up with the current set up would be my bow hanger and headlamp.

I’m going to get out my comfort zone and give it a try today I think.

I never use a pack w/a waist belt. Don't like the belt but the pockets on a belt are about worthless to me. You look like a coon getting into a bean can trying to access them w/o taking it off. Would be nice to have the pockets around front far enough to get into them w/o being double jointed.

This was a thought I had last night as well. Even though I do put a few things in these pouches they could find a home somewhere else. I’m considering using no pouches on my pack waist belt. It would make it that much slicker through the thick stuff.
