The official saddle hunting fanny pack /lumbar pack thread

I love the idea of owning one of these, but I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I see the belt is extra. I wonder how the lumbar pack is with straps only?

I’d run the Omni Belt with either pack. You can always purchase the belt later so it doesn’t hit the wallet so hard all at once or so the purchase appears less painful on the bank statement if that’s a concern. It will cost a bit more in the end, however.

Frankly, I‘d place an order for a Scout this second, but I got impatient and ordered a regular pack, x-ray, when they went on sale.

Thanks for starting this thread. Following

Setup up with the belt. The hellcat was $270 it’s 1500 cu in, the scout is 1300 cu in and $306, Tailgunner 900 cu in and $293. What am I missing here... something does not add up.

Added cost of pals webbing and the realization by kifaru that they could price it at whatever and they would still sell out.

The new hellcat has the webbing. And comes with the belt. The other 2 you have to buy it separate.

i thought it had less or something like not on top? Still doesn't explain the price difference. So just demand may account for the cost to consume.

I don’t have a setup to share really yet, but I’ve been heavily considering either the Alps big bear or little bear pack for a while now. Keep going back to the little bear because I want to keep things as small and compact as I can for this kind of setup, but the big bear is always only like $10 more so I always get stuck trying to decide which one. So haven’t done anything yet lol.

I just got the .5 like you have. Love that thing and that’ll be my main goto for sitting in a tree. But then I just ordered my third RR platform because I continue to change my mind about life in a tree. Hah. Didn’t help that it was on sale either. What was that thing about wants never ending with this saddle hunting issue? But I still wanted something smaller for the 1-2 hour sits since that’s what I usually only have time for. Will have to figure out a good way to carry it on a lumbar pack.

I’m looking at the Big Bear also, as well as the Pathfinder, which you can carry a bow on. Probably going to order 2 or 3 packs and send the ones I don’t like back.....gotta love those free returns on Amazon! Have a feeling I’m going to settle on the big bear as the pathfinder is like 2x as heavy for some reason. Like you, I also looked at the Little Bear, but like you mentioned it only a dab more for the Big Bear and I want the expandable pack for the late season when I want to carry layers to the stand and put them on there. Little Bear doesn’t come with that option...

Got mine from Amazon too. I think I see what you’re saying about the belt. Didn’t give it much thought but it is loud and kinda hard when you pull it tighter from the end of the strap. I doubt yours is defective. I think that’s just the way the material is.

If you lift up on the buckle and tilt it a ways while moving the strap, it’s a lot quieter. At least mine is. Seems like you have to tilt the buckle a good 30-40 degrees or so to get it to quiet down. I’m gonna use mine to where I’m likely not gonna take it off once I’m out of the car and walking to the woods. Will just rotate it around my waist a bit to get into it while climbing or in the tree probably.

The buckle is loud I have to admit. It snaps pretty dang loud when you click it together. Probably my one gripe about this bag is that. Oh well... I dunno, I’m still keeping mine. This isn’t the only bag I’m gonna use to hunt with anyway. Just one of a few options I have.

The loud snap when you click it together is the male prongs snapping up and into the holes in the female part of the buckle. When you push the prongs in, hold the female with your thumb across one hole and forefinger across the other. This will all but eliminate the loud snap as the prongs hit your fingers and deaden the sound.

Ok, I ordered the Big Bear, the Little Bear, Turkey Call Pockets with Game Bag and bino pocket. The Big Bear (BB) is well....big. As a matter of fact the Little Bear (LB) will fit inside of the BB fanny pocket (pic) and that doesn’t include the expandable pack part on the BB. First thing I noticed was the BB felt considerably heavier than the LB at 3lbs 1oz vs 2lbs 2oz. I was able to fit everything into the LB that I routinely carry to the stand with some room left over (pic). When I add the two turkey pockets (pic) to the front of the Little Bear (pic), you almost double your capacity. Those pockets would be great for items you need at hand on the walk in, gloves, beanie etc. and the game bag can be added to the back and could easily serve as a reservoir for an extra layer, rain jacket etc. I’m going with the Little Bear with the Turkey pockets and game bag. That gives me a modular system that I can add or subtract from depending on the time of year, situation, etc. Have other pic, if you want more PM me and I will provide.

Cool thanks for the pics and info. Since I wrote this post I did actually buy the little bear too. I haven’t had a chance to play with it a lot in a real hunting scenario but I think it’s gonna be good. I think the buckle snaps a little loud if you have to take it off and back on in the bush. Also the straps seem kind of loud when you slide them through the buckle. But the way I’m going to use it I don’t think it’ll be a big issue so not really worried about it.

That’s interesting to see the difference between the BB and LB. I like your idea of adding on pouches and being modular like that. Was considering buying the binos hardness that’s made to go on the front of the LB just to have extra storage.

Right on. I bought the bino pocket. It’s well padded and therefore, not a lot of room on the inside. The nylon game bag that comes with the Turkey pockets is really nice, quite large and nylon so it’s light weight...folds up to nothing. Good luck.

Oh ok. Thanks. Good to know. You have a link for the bags you have?

Ok sounds good. Thanks!

Here are some pics of the pockets, the game bag storage in the pocket, game bag deployed and the bino pocket. Like I said the Turkey pockets are big and add a lot of storage. Bino pocket is small with all the padding. I can barely get it to close with the binos in there. Actually wish that it wasn’t so well padded, as crazy as that sounds.

I’m loving this setup. Should be able to strap the one-stick on top of the fanny no problem. Game bag to carry clothes if needed, extra pockets up front. Can’t wait to hit the woods with this setup.

New fanny coming out from Trophyline with platform attachment method. Now where have I heard of that idea before?

Looks pretty slick.
Most of the video is on the new EDP platform. Fanny is shown near the end.

Totally cool. Thanks for the photos. I actually went ahead and bought the turkey pack last night even before your post here. I think it’ll be pretty sweet. Really looking forward to that draw bag to be able to pack in my bibs and not have to wear them in or hike awkwardly with them rolled up or whatever. I see what you’re saying about the bino harness. I held off on that one.

Going to modify my Novix sticks in the off season but also have been kicking around the idea of trying one sticking again. That would be sweet to carry for this kind of set up.

View attachment 42746View attachment 42747I like this Badlands Tree Hugger pack I picked up halfway through the season. I actually use it now as an add on to my JX3.

Found one of these on clearance at sierra trading post. I love the concept. Right now I'm running a fairly similar sized fanny with attached shoulder straps that is a field and stream brand. Excited to get it and test it out. Gotta figure out how to lash my 1 stick and undecided platform to it.

any updates from you Kifaru buyers? they still have some available.

I have the Amazon round up going…wife is about to have a fit…Alps little bear & pathfinder, tenzing hangtime and flex. Hangtime is really nice size and quality is very apparent. Pathfinder is has big pros (daypack, bow/rifle carry, size/modularity) and big cons (sticks way out the back, no bottom cinch straps, pockets covered by straps, no structure, def not the same quality of materials as tenzing). The little bear is…little, but seems big enough to hold everything needed. The flex delivers tomorrow…pray I survive it :tearsofjoy:
