The phantasm is born

I know I am a little late on the cobra buckle part of this discussion, but I just found a place that has them on sale. They are sold by the side (m/f) and adjustable on each side and different colors. They are running $6 - $8 for each side plus shipping...

Love the look of this! Where did you get that mesh?
it was an ebay vendor I actually wanted olive green but they had this as a 2m piece left they put it in with my olive, they have none left which i am gutted about. I have not seen it anywhere, I now have the rest of the parts now so full steam ahead, regards and more to follow shortly, wayne

Shoot! Regardless can't wait to see your finished product. Love your work Wayne!!!

So after going to my local 3D shoot and letting a few mates try out my Kestrel clone they are hooked and we decided or rather they did that I would make them a mesh saddle.
So I actually wanted to have a go as I already had loads of material and set on today.

I cut out a shape in paper and stuck it together so I had a pattern for all three

you can see just with the grosgrain how its already holding a cupping shape. I will use maroon seat belt webbing

now I have a question what size cobra buckles do you guys use, my kestrel i used a harness webbing and buckle so this will be my first time using them, regards wayne
It looks like you have a lot of sewing experience with using the special edger foot that applies the edging while you sew. Do you think I need one of these to apply edging on my saddle build?

To be honest it is hard work with it, i have found i have to tweek as I go, one of the three i am doing it all went wrong, fortunately it is where the webbing covers it anyway so it is ok.
I watched somebody on a hammock forum made a better one out of thin plastic, this i copied and worked far better, i just hot glued it to my machine bed when i did my whole silnylon tarp, where i needed to do a lot of edging.
for the saddle i just go real slow with that metal one but I can't honestly say i would buy another. on my very first saddle i just folded it in half and ironed it so it stayed folded, i then just used those red clips and that was the neatest out of the lot.
I think with the metal one there are a lot f tweeks to get it to work properly, I have seen other brands that fold out of the way and people seam to be able to rip it rather quickly but what i found is it wants to pull to one side and fold incorrectly if you try to go at pace, regards wayne.

A raw edge binder is money. Well worth it in my opinon.

Those tiny tan loops, are they your linesmans rope attachments? Are they sewn to the main webbing?

As squirrels says they are leg loops, I have not done the linesman yet, the leg loop webbing goes around the webbing and box stitched to secure, regards Wayne
I can post pics of how I did them

here's the leg loop straps for the g hooks and how it just goes around the seat belt webbing and box stitched

I added shrink wrap to the amsteel and after the knot where i melted the end to make it really tidy

Damn fine craftsmanship Wayne! What size thread did you use?
I used 40 tera polyester thread it’s very strong, just had a quick hang in next doors tree it is very nice, I really like mesh, the kestrel clone is great but this is the next level comfy, I am very pleased indeed, I was going to meet my friends for a practice hang to see if they want alterations but after that quick hang it’s on the money I will just do them all and get the linesman’s on, going to use a nylon air tube inside the tubular webbing to make it rigid but that is the only thing to do the saddle as is is perfect, I like the Amsteel bridge and prusik also

I see you buried the amsteel all the way through itself like the actual utilibridge.

Did you happen to try just the amsteel prusik on the regular unburied amsteel? I am surprised to see that a 7/64 prusik grabs really well on an unburied 3/16 line. I did it just as a demo with what I had on hand. I am so pleasantly surprised with its strength and unburied simplicity that I'm going to test it out.

I didn't try it to be honest I just copied what others had done although when it came I thought it felt solid enough to grab but just buried it, I have some nice fids so they just slip up the inside really easy so it wasn't a hassle.
for anyone wanting measurements of what I did here's the saddle measurements, I did not fold around the curve just hemmed the grosgrain but the ends I double folded because I wanted the ends very strong regards wayne

Thanks for the dimensions of the saddle. Do you remember how long is the 2 inch webbing loop? Just got my mesh in the mail Friday and I'm excited to get going on my build.
