The things we find in the woods...

Thats a 4" Stokes Mortar. Nasty critter. Did you notify EOD?

You betcha I did. I am a retired Marine Artillery officer and learned quickly on that dud ordnance usually isn't...

I was hunting mainside Quantico where it is bow-only and you have to pass a simply proficiency shoot to be eligible to hunt it because of the amount of people hiking, biking, and just enjoying the woods. I am amazed it was hidden for so long.

I been seeing threads about hunters leaving stands and etc in the woods and whether if it's legal or not. I thought I would start one to just post pics or talk about things we have found in the woods, whether if its illegal or not. It could be a deer, critter, or anything that made you snap a photo of it. Today was a first for me though, and the reason I wanted to start this thread(last pics).....

Theres a reason that gorilla stand was left in the woods. They rust like crazy, break, creak, paint chips and peels, pinch on your kidneys, i could go on and on. I cut mine up with a torch after 2 weeks to save someone else from getting into it.

Ummm.. Is it empty? Or washed away from some place?

You think I opened it?? :tearsofjoy:

I was surveying the property line of a couple hundred acres that my company just bought. It was on the neighbors side of the property line so I didn’t go over to open it. There were two others also that I didn’t take pics of.

The neighbor came out and spoke to me at a later point. He was kind of a Richard and definitely looked like the type of guy to have random coffins on his property.

This kind of stuff is what gives a bad image to the general public. I get mad when I see this kind of abuse to a tree. I'm no flower sniffer but take a kid out there and try to explain this to them when they see it. The only thing you can say is, some people are slobs and the ones that do that aren't hunters in my book. As far as the homemade stands, I've been guilty of that my self when I first started hunting...... to spend money on a stand back in the day was looked at as a waste a money. Heck sometimes I didn't want to spend the money on a tree stand myself!! You spend enough on a bow or gun or whatever then you have to plunk another $200 or so for a stand and steps etc. You know the thinking back in the day was, " Just grab some old two by fours out of the barn or shed and put something up." Man, have things changed. For the better!!!! Thankfully saddlehunting and sandhunters have alleviated the need for this. And you're not leaving it in the woods, you leave the woods like you found them.
When I started deer hunting we would build bare minimum platforms up in a fork and use a cedar tree for a ladder. Cut the cedar down and trim off the limbs you didn’t need for steps and tie it to the tree.

There was one time I climbed a tree in the dark, set up and when the sun rose I realized I had no shot thanks to a branch right in the way. Of course I did not have by limb saw. I look behind me and there is a tree close enough to touch... what is literally hanging on a cut branch? A very old hand saw!! Grabbed it and cut down the branch ( legal where I am) and put it back where it was. I thought that was wild. I have a picture somewhere if I come across it I'll post it.

Found this one Saturday morning. One of yours?

Sooo…look who moved into the river farm I’ve hunted for the last 20 years in Nebraska (her AND her kittens). No wonder my buddy hasn’t seen many deer in the last two years. Then i get this night shot from a buddy that lets me hunt here in central Florida. Just can’t catch a break. Might be patrolling in under NODS. and no, I didn’t apply for a bear tag.
