The things we find in the woods...

For decades I felt the deer woods was the safest place I'd ever take myself into and never was armed unless hunting
Then people changed that for me.
Now I carry my high-cap 45 and at least 2 spare 13 round mags without exception.
Sad really.
The woods are still safer than the inner city.

A buddy found a human skull on my friend's farm.
He found it in early October. They called the police to report it and several law enforcement bureaus set upon that farm with everything from agents, to dogs, to quads, and helicopters to investigate. Basically trashed the property for the rest of bow season.
The victim had some sort of breakdown. He walked out into the woods the previous winter, took off all his clothes, and froze to death.

I found a set of boots way back on top of a mountain once. The way they were arranged I would have sworn they were attached to a body. I poked around and could not find any bones so I assume there is another story to go with them, but it was creepy.

That’s creepy but if you read Missing 411, it’s quite common for people to go missing or be found later ( dead or alive) without their shoes!

Back in August I posted about finding a spring loaded gong in a powerline I assumed was for some long rang target practice.

I was back there in September and there were several hits on the gong but I still didn't know exactly where the shots were coming from.

I was doing some scouting after this morning's sit and found the elevated platform the guy was shooting from at the other end of the powerline. Per my Huntstand app this platform is all of 1200 yards from the gong.

Walking back to my truck in Bankhead forest, a man in a van stopped on the road to chat, had a rifle beside him. after a min or two ask me if I had a pistol on me(bow hunting), adjusted my coat and said hell yes, no problems but you never know.

Wish we were allowed to carry during archery hunting in MN

I'm always packing my SW Sigma 9mm every single day unless I'm bowhunting. Stupidly, it is illegal in the People's Socialist Republic of New York State to carry a pistol or any firearm when you are bowhunting however. But I do always have a couple of blades stashed somewhere JIC.

Found these railroad spikes only one side of this tree about 20 yards from a clearing on public land.

The top half of the tree was missing, probably broken off by one of many ice storms we get in this area.

I didn't take a pic but will when I return to this area of a 50's pickup miles from any access.

The woods are still safer than the inner city.
Swimming daily on the surface off of the Farralllon Islands dressed in a seal suit is safer than walking through any American inner city
My beloved woods are still relatively speeking safe just not as safe as they were even 5 years ago but again what is?

I had a run in this year (wrote a post about it) where I walked on public but near private at night with a headlamp. I thought I was going to be attacked and have to end the threat. I knew this to be the case, but it underlined it and others mentioned it: if on public land, avoid neighboring property owners totally. I think that is one of the biggest threats.

Keep it concealed unless needed. Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.
Nah, I'd rather not catch a weapons charge and worse than that, possibly lose hunting privileges because I'd prefer to carry while bow hunting.

It's not as much people I'm concerned about around here, I've been shot at but it wasn't intentional.

I always felt pretty safe in the woods until last year when a bear came right to the base of my tree. I realized then how little I'd be able to defend myself if a bear came up and munched on my feet while in in a saddle. Too far to reach with a knife, tough shot with a bow, I suppose I could use a broadhead to poke at it. With my pistol I'd be able to at least get a few shots off

Don't worry. Bears are usually more scared of you than you are of them.

You might want to check with hunters in the few lower 48 that have grizzlies they'd likely to disagree with that statement
And yes black bears are usually more scared of you than you of them that is till you meet the one that's not or has cubs
I v met only 3 black bears while hunting out west and and two while vacationing in the Smoky Mountains and none were that interested in me but none were what I would've called scared of me either. Glad as all he!! I was armed every time and even more glad each time ended with nobody getting hurt including the bears that one of which had three cubs and had a disturbing habit of daily and nightly visits to the secluded cabin I was staying in but a little caution and common sense on my part and my wife and I avoided any close encounters with moma and her babies
First time we saw the cubs my wife saw them before me and was going to rush outside and rescue what she thought were lost Lab puppies on the deck that went around the entire cabin
I managed to stop her till I got a look and told her they went Labs but bear cubs and just as well as mom was only a few feet away just not visible from the window my wife say the cubs from.
Made the next six days and nights quite interesting especially for the bonfire we had each night.

HaHa! I just assumed we were talking black bears. Everyone knows grizzlies aren't afraid of anything. As far as black bears go, I have hunted them over bait off and on for the better part of 40 years and only had 1 encounter that made me nervous. I also hunted them exclusively with archery gear and have never carried a back up gun until just recently when my wife joined me on a few hunts.

There have been several mobile meth labs found under small bridges in our area. They also throw their waste from meth making in our creeks and rivers and some of it is extremely hazardous. Sad times.
