With hunting season quickly approaching, I’m curious how many of you have tried the Ridgeline Wingman System as your One Stick? How does it compare the the Ultimate One stick or the Sh1kar Stick? Do you feel like the platform is big enough to completely replace a standalone platform like the Mission or the Predator?

i assume you mean the trophyline wingman- it doesn't seem as popular for one sticking as it has a versa button and not a cam cleat, though this is likely an easy mod. there's a few people on here that use them though, not as common. as far as platform size, that's going to vary, i hunt off of a mission platform which is huge, others use ring of steps or stand on the top of a doublestep stick for hours.

How necessary is the cam cleat for one sticking? Or the versa button work? I guess I’d need to ascend less per stick move

Versa button works but many people (myself included) prefer the cam cleat as it is faster and easier to detach the stick completely and re-attach higher up. I prefer to detach completely so I don’t have to slide the rope up the tree - I find that fiddly and annoying and have enough of it to do with my tether when 1-sticking.

Try it with the button first and see if you feel ok with it. Everybody is different.

I use a stick with a versa button and a cam buckle strap. The cam cleat is not necessary. There is more than one way to tango...

With the button and strap, you set your rope so that you hang off to the side of the stick a little. This puts you in line with the buckle of the strap and your rope doesn't catch on the stick platform at all. Once you loosen the stick and get it above your waist, you can suck in close to the tree and wrap your legs around it. This makes dangling more comfortable, quiet, and stable. (In my opinion)

I'm one sticking this year with an Amsteel daisy chain and like stated above once you have your legs wrapped around the tree its easy to lean down and over with both hands and free the stick to move it up. It's working for me and don't see the need for a cam cleat.

This sounds like a great idea! Basically you never untie the strap from the stick. To move the stick up, you loosen the strap; to secure, tighten the strap

You make a really good point with sliding the rope up and down the tree. Will try the versa button first and decide if I want to switch to cam cleat later. Thanks!

Do you prefer the daisy chain over the factory default buckle strap?

Absolutely, I made the daisy chains myself, and made them 6+ feet long. I found the stock straps were too short for the bases of some of the trees I wanted to climb. There are a few tricks to get them super tight as well. For instance with the stick on the tree and say a loop goes over the button with ease the chain will sag a bit before it locks into the tree. If you take the stick and turn it slightly horizontally to get the shaft of the stick closer to the tree, put the closer loop that previously didn't reach over the button and then rotate the stick back into climbing position starting from the top stand off and then pull out and over the lower standoff into position, It will be rock solid with very minimal sag if any at all. I know that was kinda hard to explain but hope it made sense.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely try the rotating technique too

Could this be used with daisy chains instead of a versa button or a cam cleat on a one stick setup for faster moves ?

Has anyone tried installing a cam cleat on the Wingman Platform? Are they compatible? And which cam cleat did you use?

that is a versa button. it's jsut got some fancy angles to it. so yes, it'd work. technically any attachment method, even the stock strap and buckles most sticks come with would work for one sticking, you're just hanging down from your tether with your legs wrapped aroud the tree to loosten it up longer. lots of people go cam cleat becuase it's fast/east to loosten and move the stick.

my personal opinion here: the one attachment method where the "jury is still out" is the clam cleat like what the shikar one sticks use. i'm not going to use that any time soon but i'm sure there's someone on here with the opposite opinion.

it has two bolts instead of one like a versabutton so you'd have to drill a second hole in the post, most people use the bolt hole where the versa button was for one cam bolt, and drill for the other one. use grade 8 or higher bolts if you do this.

Gotcha, does regular drills work, or do I need to use a special drill for the metal? Haven’t done mods like this before

you'll need a drill bit appropriate for the metal you're cutting. almost all posts are aluminum, so a wood drill bit COULD work, HSS or cobalt drills would be your best bet. also it's a heck of a lot easier to drill straight with a drill press than drilling by hand, but by hand is possible. Keep asking questions, this is a great forum and it's best to learn before going out in the woods, i was in your shoes a year ago.
