Thinking About Self-Filming

I swear this place is going to either get me a divorce or bankrupt lol. I was just thinking this morning I think I am pretty set up for next hunting season... and now I am thinking I should add a solo hunter and the booster to my bow!
Yeah man I agree with that. I’ve just tried to sell stuff I have to fund most of this. But I’ve ran out of stuff to sell now ha ha ha I try to keep most of my stuff on the DL. If she does find out I sell it like I got a steel on all of it lol.

Watching this. I have been using a go pro session attached to the gun and on a small tripod and everything looks a mile away. I am leaning to the Canon Vixia too. Not sure which model yet, but open to all the ideas and comments. I will set the camera on the shooting lane and wait. If it is an animal I am not going to shoot, then I will follow it with a camera.

Yeah I don’t think ya can go wrong with that. I went with Tactacam bc it was decent priced and small. I have also used my GoPro 5 and yeah it’s good for filming myself not the shot. I’m new to filming and saddle hunting so it’s a lot to take it but so far loving it all. Should have some kinda of footage to put up Sunday from the Tactacam

Here's a video that I filmed last turkey season with the Tactacam 4.0. I wasn't overly impressed with the quality, and decided it was more of a headache than it was worth.

I picked up a cheap Canon Vixia HF-R800 for self filming deer and did that a few times last season. This camera (about the same cost) was WAY better in terms of quality, but my discipline in carrying and filming was lacking. I also haven't found a good way to film without it being in the way when tower blind hunting as we have some smaller towers on my lease that can get crowded pretty quick with a kid, rifle, and camera gear.
You guys that have the 4.0 or 5.0 Tactacams, are you guys filming all the way zoomed in? I’m not 100% sure on the 4.0, but know the 5.0 comes with a more zoomed in feature that you can select.

Ebay's got some cheap used camcorders. I ordered a used sony handycam HDR-cx-240 for about 75 bucks. Has a lot more zoom than any action cam

I just got mine the 4.0. Watched a tutorial video there is three modes 2.7k low light mode 1080p 5 x zoom mode and 120 FPS mode (slow motion). Haven’t had it out yet going turkey hunting in the AM till try to take some low light and mid day videos to post.

I just put together this package off of Amazon for right at $200. This is a Canon hf r800. The cam works well for me at the price. I was able to get clear photos of a Tom turkey at about 600 yards with the 57x zoom. This is a cheap Amazon tripod it's on. Not the most stable and definitely not a fluid head for panoramic views. But for hunting turkeys it super light and and plenty stable with only 2 leg sections out. Snapchat-1969437801.jpg

Quality is good on cam. Zoom isn’t the best but the booster does its job and can see shot. Only made one shot tho plan to do some more and try to get the best footage to post up. I dropped bow after shot need to train myself to hold in place. Also want to get my lumenok on so can see shots better. Over all for size and price of cam it’s decent. It’s not going to get you the 57x zoom at 600 yards lol but so far likening the xl booster and tactacam 4.0

My opinion is that I'd rather not film than film with low quality gear. It's just frustrating when you watch it back and its disappointing. If you wanna film save your money till you can afford better gear and its much easier to sell quality gear if you decide filming not for you. Don't get me wrong filming has a huge weight addition to your gear. That was the exact reason I got into saddle hunting. I couldn't carry a stand and filming gear anymore. Its a pain in the butt carrying and setting up and taking down everyday but when you get that hunt its worth every second you spent working on it.

I have the same cam that I've used off/on for a year or so. The biggest problems I have with the cam and the reason why I don't use it as much, is due to the lack of an external jack for the mic and the lack of a port for a LANC remote. Both of those things would make it so much easier to use IMO.

Not bad for 60 yards. Have you tried doing a bow shooting comparison with and without that TAP XL? I’d be interested in seeing a side by side comparison.
I haven’t yet I need to go get a new bow target Have shot with it and the shock is most definitely almost gone but there is still some. I got to get target some more arrows and new Luma’s so we can see shot easier. Also need to train myself more to keep on target after shot. I will be doing some more videos try to get a comparison.

Thanks for that video @Shane6491. Looks like an eventful morning in the turkey woods!
Yeah it was a decent morning for being in my saddle lol it’s not the conventional way to hunt turkeys but I need some seat time and the private farm I hunt is loaded with turkey. They are almost as predictable as the deer on their patters lol

The drop after the shot is what steered me away from any bow attached camera. For me, It is too important to have eyes on the prize after the shot to worry about whether the bow mounted camera is still pointing in the direction of the shot. I couldn’t train myself to do it consistently.

The ability of a remote would definitely be nice, I almost got the R80 for the wifi but couldn't fit it in the budget. For the external mic i just got the L bracket for $7 on amazon. It's not as compact as if it had its own hot shoe but it definitely helps keep the mic from picking up any camera noises.

Here's a long clip of a doe kill from last year using the cam and no mic. Just a tripod inside a shooting house. Sorry for no fancy edits, just testing out the camera.
