THP PUBLIC HUNTING CHALLENGE PA

I believe that THP's YouTube channel has done several things, from literally recruiting new hunters to the sport, to making experienced hunters better. Lots of people are going to try and replicate it, but it's their sportsmanship and personalities that make it must-watch TV.

I’m completely new to hunting this year, started with Turkey in the spring. Was debating between waterfowl since I already had a shotgun and bow for deer for the fall.

I can say definitively their channel and specifically watching the public land challenge in Michigan from last year (I live in SE MI) made me decide to try and learn deer hunting instead of waterfowl. Mainly their approach to scouting and mobility. It’s a stereotype but not coming from a hunting background my idea of deer hunting was sitting in a blind on a field edge.

I’ve yet to get one but have enjoyed scouting and finding sign. Thus far it’s led to me seeing a few bucks and several does. I did have an encounter similar to Zach’s where I was at full draw at last light on a buck that was facing me head on at five yards on the ground. I did not shoot because I hadn’t practiced that shot and it was difficult to see through the peep. As well as I’ve read it’s not very high percentage. I’m hoping to get a good broadside or slight quartering away shot for my first one.

Catching up on THP. Interesting to see all of their close encounters on the ground without being super anal about scent control. Meanwhile people 30 foot up in a tree are worried about what deodorant to wear. I like the looks of the buck Jake is drawing back on in the teaser.

Don’t let any “old timer” sway your opinions on how to hunt. Many people have 1 year experience 30 times over and not 30 years experience. Just listen to who is giving you advice, what their success rate is and decide for yourself if you want to try things “their way”.

You have the opportunity to try any type of hunting strategies you want and learn from them. It will be a great experiment for you.

Stay safe, stay thirsty for knowledge, keep copious notes from each hunt and stay humble once you start knocking down big bucks.
