Starting to get back to shooting trad again . I will be shooting a sage 40 lb to start then maybe go up 5 to 10 lbs for hunting .What arrow would you choose? I am thinking of a 500 grain full length with a 100 gran to start or would this be too weak of spine? thanks

I think you mean 500 spine full length. Several thoughts: 1) "full length" could be anywhere from 28-34.5". 2). We don't know your draw length. 3) We don't know how good your release is and that can greatly effect spine needed. 4) We don't know anything about the bow other than the proposed #40 @ 28".

If it were me, I would buy some black eagle vintage 500's as they're the longest arrow I know of. Spine is measured 28" apart which means a 34.5" arrow will be a lot lighter spine.

I will gladly help in anyway I can. I am a dealer for black eagle. Good luck on your journey! Trad archery is as fun as it gets, but it can also be very frustrating when you're as inconsistent as me.

It depends on the arrow manufacturer also. Gold tip would recommend a 400 spine. There are a lot of variables.

Yes 500 spine my bad . May get some 400 spine also just need to be flinging some kind of arrows soon .

400 from a 40# bow is way overspined imo. I shoot 400s out of my 60-65# bows, 28.5 inches with 195 grain up front.

Yep, agree 100%. I shoot 600's out of bows up to about 45#....depending on center cut.

I agree too. Gold tip trad classic xt 600s for my 45 pound longbow. Mine are about 27.25 inch’s with a 200 grain fieldpoint

This is essentially what I was saying. IF you order the .500 spine black eagle vintage they come at 34.5" carbon to carbon. That will give him a lot more play room with his spine. Carbon arrows' spine is measured at 28". So it's likely that full 34" shafts would be in the .600 spine area.

I shoot 50-52# with a 28.5 DL! I shoot beman centershot 400 spine with 225grn on front, and arrow length around 29.75in. honestly I struggled with 400 or 500 during bare shaft tuning and found more consistency with 400 spine. basically just bare shaft tune the crap out of both a 400 and 500 spine arrow and see which works better. Just make sure when bare shaft tuning you have your bow exactly how you would hunt with it, and release is as constant as you can.
