Traditional bow kills 2022/2023 season.

Excited to get the season started next weekend.
Hoping to add to this soon.

Although I didn’t close the deal tonight, it still got me pumped for shooting one with the stick bow.

Left work as quick as I could this afternoon and went down to a piece of public that’s a few hundred acres, nothing huge. I scouted my way in about a mile and a half and found a nice pinch that had 2 trails merging and some fresh scat around a locust. Set up about 1.5 hours before dark. Had a nice 8 (115-120ish) that came down the trail. It took him about 15 or so minutes to cover 30 yards. He got in to sub 20 and I needed him to take about 5 more steps so he’d be on the trail broadside and then he picked me off. I was in my climber and I almost always set up on the backside of the tree and stand but went against my gut and just stood against the front of the tree this time.

Didn’t seal the deal but still gave me some confidence knowing I had him within range.

Was that locust droppin beans?

Forgot to add these to this thread. Dad and I doubled up within 45 min of each other last weekend using the two bows he built in the “New bow in the works thread”.

That’s awesome.
This thread is keeping me motivated to struggle through the season with the stick bow lol.

Could have easily shot that 8 with a compound yesterday, but having the bow in my hand with pressure on the string watching him spend 15+ minutes ease down the trail to my tree was more of a rush than shooting him a compound would have been.

In the past two years I have had 4 encounters with really good bucks that would have been dead with a compound or crossbow in my hand. It honestly doesn’t bother me in the least that I didn’t release an arrow at any of them. Just makes me hungrier to try again.

Went to a new piece of public tonight and scouted my way in, found fresh sign, figured out where I thought they’d be moving within bow range and set up. Had a doe at 5 steps and she had no clue I was in there.

Just a doe, not a Booner or anything, but being forced to rely on woodsmanship to set up where they’ll be close versus being in the general area and know that if I’m 30 yards off, I can still reach out with the compound has been fun. I’ve had a couple bucks that I’ve had within 30 that I just watch them go by, smile, and shake my head thinking “well, I guess you’ll have to get better if you’re going to kill one with this..”

this thread is getting me fired up as I’m pushing through a head cold .
@Arkie - my hunts this year with “encounters” have been similar, challenging myself to get closer.
Right now I’m marking sightings; I haven’t begun to bleat or call, or push in aggressively same day / next day.
l’ll return to general area if wind dictates; to try and observe pattern , get closer if I read sign well or catch movement to from bedding / feeding.
I’m finally getting to where I don’t want to grab a compound / crossbow .
( I’ll still gun hunt - separate tag ya know )

After a rough start to the season I finally made a good shot on this doe last night. She might be my biggest doe ever. She weighed 130lbs dressed. Im thankful I got her. My first deer with my Bear Ausable 64" 39#@28.
Bro. Hope that farmer isn't too upset you shot one of his horses.

Didn’t make a great shot. Think she stepped forward as I released. Entry is about 6” right if where I intended. Exit is 6-8” lower. First deer with my prototype broadhead. Exit plugged with bigger than a softball mess of gut but had a plenty of blood for easy trailing.

Got pics of that broadhead, or is it top secret?
