Traditional bow kills 2022/2023 season.

Was fortunate to take a large doe last night with my 40# Galaxy Black Ridge hybrid longbow. Arrow setup was a 600 spine gold tip trad with a 50 grain insert and 175 grain grizzly single bevel broadhead. Shot was quartering to at 10 yards. Arrow zipped through scapula on entry and exited lower at crease.

She was part of a group of 7 does being harassed by a 150” buck in front of me the whole evening. Unfortunately he was only chasing the yearlings and fawns around. The old doe I shot wanted nothing to do with him. She finally came into the edge of the woods I was sitting in while the rest of the does and the buck remained 75 yards out in the field. When I shot her, she ran right out into the field and flopped over right in front of the other deer. They didn’t even react and stayed for the remainder of the evening. Cool hunt for sure!

My 10year old daughter killed her first every deer on November 13th. Her 26# at 24" draw longbow was enough to get full body cavity penetration at 8yds with an old magnusII broadhead. View attachment 76517View attachment 76518
Dead-gum-it, now I am really gonna feel bad if I can't get it done with the stick bow this year haha. Too cool, that is awesome. Stone cold killer you got there. Congrats to you and your daughter.

I am inspired by you stick bow guys. I had to go compound after an injury. I’m working on exercises and can now pull back my old bear at #45. Maybe I can get back next fall. I look at my sticks and I get a little chocked up. 3 decades with them lots of memory’s. Nice to see young kids getting into the sport.

such a great post! coming from a Dad of a 11 y/o and 15 y/o daughters. My girls scout and go to the 3D range with me, I’m trying to get them to where they ask to hunt.

Nice takeaway about getting close for us.

I was calm but I still target panicked, which for me means not picking a spot to aim at. This is something I’ve struggled with and I’m trying to break it. I shot him back and high but it came out the other side and he died in less than a minute and piled up 30 yards. This is my first traditional bow kill and while I’d love for it to be a better placed shot, I’m thankful he died quickly. #55 slick stick bear paw 8A14C868-E254-47EB-8CA5-D1CA7FE134B6.jpeg73E8FEDF-BA29-4620-BAFC-425BB6297EE4.jpeg

Kids probably thinking ’why we packing out the hooves grandpa?’

Haha. We typically don't but the deer laid overnight in 20 deg temps and the hide was frozen solid on the lower legs. We left the feet on until dad got home and it got warm enough he could peel the skin back to separate the joints.

Wow!!!! These are some very inspiring posts!!!
I have been a compound bow hunter for the last 4 years exclusively and saddle hunting the last 2 years.... each step influenced by a couple good friends. What I didn't realize was it was a gradually pull to get me to the final step of traditional hunting. I have always been fascinated by my buddies hunting but this forum is sucking me in more.
I just got a loaner 53# @ 28" recurve and I am watching Tom Clum videos on building correct form. Well I am learning a lot and wondering how I have ever killed a deer based on my lack of understanding proper mechanics. Anyway, I have discovered that 53 to 56#'s is too much for me to do slow draws for practice on. Any advice on a starter practice bow, cheap but functional.
What weight bow is idea for deer hunting?
If this has been covered In another post please point me in the right direction.
Thanks and congrats to everyone again!!!!

I would start with a 40 - 45 lb bow....Something you can handle to develop proper form and will do well for deer hunting. Trust me on this.....

here’s a good thread to start with. https://saddlehunter.com/community/...rad-again-suggestions-for-a-bow-choice.48590/

Got another with the selfbow. This time it was a 66” John Strunk “Spirit” Osage 52# at 26”, self nock Surewood Shaft w/VPA 3blade on the business end. This old nanny made the mistake of walking behind my at about 12 yds. Gotta love a saddleView attachment 76483
I just received a selfbow from John; 64" 47#@27" Buffalo Runner Spirit, osage sapling bow with the sapwood still on...been shooting it for 2 days. Amazed how quiet and efficient it is, and accurate for something as crooked as a dog's leg. Three 175 Ace broadheads from 20 yards kneeling on the Niff-T seat. Love it; hope I can do as well as you have.Screenshot_20230919-175421_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20230919-175634_Gallery.jpg
